notes

Dan Gottshall, trombonist and vocalist and Miriam Kaul, saxophonist, are serving up a banquet of singin´ swingin´ Christmas jazz favorites, guaranteed to put you in the home for the holidays spirit. They are joined by a great rhythm section: From the Baltimore contingency: Tom Williams, Drums, Tim Murphy, Piano, and Geoff Harper, Bass, as well as Delores King Williams on a vocal duet. The Berlin rhythm section is: Rolf Zielke, piano, Kenny Martin Drums, and Darryl Taylor, bass.

Dan Gottshall plays lead trombone in the NDR Radio Big Band in Hamburg Germany. His first solo CD, The Golem Shuffle, featuring Gary Thomas and Dennis Chambers is also available at CD Baby. Miriam Kaul is a freelance saxophonist in Berlin, Germany and has performed with Greg Osby, Chuck Brown, Dennis Chambers, Eva Cassidy as well as The Supremes, The Temptations, etc.

Once upon a time on a cold day in December, while drinking mulled wine at a Christmas Market in Berlin, the idea to create a Jazz Christmas Program was conceived. As with so many ideas that are imagined under such circumstance, it was the next morning forgotten. However, shortly thereafter, under the throes of homesicknes, visions of sugar plums and Christmas jazz once again danced through our heads. That same December we presented a program of American style Christmas favorites with Dan singing at the A-Trane Jazz Club in Berlin, Germany.

Encouraged by a loyal public of years and great musicians, we have combined some live performances from Berlin with some studio performances from Baltimore to create this jazz Christmas CD.
Lo and Behold, “Christmas Time Is Here!

Readers familiar with Gottshall's previous solo effort, the hard-edged Golem Shuffle, might wonder what kind of bend he might bring to an album of Christmas standards. While the Shuffle was all funk, hip-hop and attitude, Christmas Time is Here provides swinging takes on familiar holiday favorites and some tunes you may not have heard. In this release, Gottshall continues to showcase both his singing and trombone playing. Gottshall's performance is always tasty, occasionally exhibiting that frenetic energy which made up much of Shuffle. Miriam Kaul provides fun sax and flute licks throughout the CD. Throughout, the rhythm sections are impressive. As you might expect from Dan Gottshall, this is a varied album, with tunes presented in many styles. It would make a fun present for your favorite trombonist, or a nice holiday addition to your jazz collection.
