notes

GRATEFUL is a compilation of the songs of John Bucchino sung by a variety of extraordinary artists: Liza Minelli, Art Garfunkel, Judy Collins, Patti LuPone, Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Webb, Kristin Chenoweth, Ann Hampton Callaway, Andrea Marcovicci, Billy Stritch, Adam Guettel, Amanda McBroom, David Campbell, Brian Lane Green, Lois Sage and Daisy Prince. They are accompanied by Bucchino on piano.

A companion piano/vocal songbook is also available.

In addition to the singers listed above, John's songs have been recorded and performed by Barbara Cook, Yo-Yo Ma, Audra MacDonald, The Boston Pops, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, and many others in venues that include Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, The Sydney Opera House and The White House.

The Houston Chronicle calls him: "A new American pop master... Bucchino merges the artfulness and sophistication of America's master songwriters (Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin) with the contemporary style and plaintive folk quality of the top singer/songwriters who emerged in the 1970s, such as Carole King and James Taylor."

The New York Times says: "Mr. Bucchino possesses a singular voice and an absolute integrity of expression."

And Rex Reed writes: "If Tennessee Williams was alive and writing tunes he'd be John Bucchino."

  • LOVE it!
    author: Jennifer Henry

This is one brilliant album - I already had a copy of the Grateful album (burned by a friend who put my onto the brilliant JB), but right after seeing 'A catered' affair, wanted to legalize myself and give JB the royalties through CD sales that he deserves. I also got the Grateful children's book out of the Brooklyn library, and sing it to my girls wheneve they will let me - you are an amazing wizard, JB! PS the service through CDbaby was fantastic - fast, cheap, amusing, great!

i found this c.d. quite by accident - so for me it was first SERENDIPITY, and more than that, i have listened, cried, sang at the top of my lungs, laughed and smiled at the first hearing and every hearing thereafter! liza minnelli's rich familiar happy voice, the superior vocalizations of kristen, andrea, daisy, everyone --- this is one wonderful textural fabulous body of work. on any given day i can recall and find myself humming a tune from GRATEFUL --- that is how far-reaching and incredible each and every song is. John are you our next Sondheim, Arlen, Gershwin, PORTER???? i am so excited to have found and to continue to enjoy this and subsequent music by John Bucchino. Hurry Up! We lovers of fine lyric and song long for more of your awesome, talented, personal, vibrant writing. Thank you for your tenacious unequivocal talent[s]! • Great sermon illustration!
    author: Carol Davis

"Better Than I" has proven to be a wonderful sermon illustration for our lead pastor during his series on the life of Joseph. Thank you for capturing the essence of forgiveness through beautiful lyrics and a voice like no other.

  • Songs for singers
    author: Pippin Fowler

These are songs that singers love, with lyric melody and poignant words, flying high and running deep as the most intense emotions we try to hide inside. Sadly, all of the artists are not singers, so I couldn't give that 5th star. But this CD will get a great deal of play, even if a few tracks are sometimes skipped. Special gratitude goes to Judy Collins, Lois Sage, Art Garfunkel, Brian Lane Green, and Kristin Chenoweth for their treasured tracks from this talented song writer's best.

  • Destined to be part of the Great American Songbook
    author: Rod

I heard Barbara Cook perform "Sweet Dreams" at her Met concert in January 2006, and she rightly proclaimed Bucchino's work to be among the best of the new generation of American singer/songwriters. Both Cook's and Judy Collins' versions are gorgeous and heartfelt; but it for "Sweet Dreams" and enjoy the rest of this lovely collection.

author: Jayne Kacik reflections on GRATEFUL

I don't know why I am just discovering this CD and John. I was searching Adam Guettel and Unexpressed came up. I immediately heard a clip of it, then immediately bought it from ITUNES and bought the songbook. I can't tell you how I feel when I listen to it! Tears...it's heaven. I can't wait to hear more...please keep writing, John.

Thank you for sharing your God given gift John! I tell you this song, "GRATEFUL"....couldn't have arrived at a better time!!! Not only does it stand for my motto in life, I shared it with my 2nd grade religious education class yesterday...very powerful!! AND...little did I know that I would receive a call last night that my brother David..(music lover, funniest most loving brother around) passed away suddenly from a heart attack. So...I had this book on a little stand on my dining room table since I received it..to remember and be grateful NO MATTER WHAT!! GOD BLESS YOU JOHN....KEEP WRITING/PLAYING/SHARING your most beautiful gift with the world honey!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!

  • If you like short stories, you'll like this CD.
    author: Wendy Jones

Grateful is a series of short stories set to music. New love, laughter, heartbreak, it's all here. I bought it originally for the title song: a spiritual song even atheists will find moving. The bonus was that so many of the other songs touched me, too. On a budget? This is the one CD you must have.

  • Absolutely Amazing!!!
    author: Marnie

Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. I can't take this CD out of my CD player!!! The music and lyrics are a reflection of all our lives. Beautiful, haunting and inspiring. John, you are a brilliant composer and lyricist, thank you for sharing your gift!

  • Outstanding reflections on the human spirit and real moments we live through.
    author: Tim Hairston

I find this CD to be wonderful for it touches the soul in a unique and lovely way. It was suggested to me by my Musical Director when I was putting together my Cabaret show. I fell in love instantly with the beautiful melodies, passionate phrasing, and lyrics that capture true emotions. I am using 2 songs in my show and it has become one of my favorite travel CDs.

  • FANTASTIC!
    author: Kristin

This CD is simply beautiful. John Bucchino's ability to write amazes me, and the melodies match perfectly. The artists are so talented, especially Kristin Chenoweth, whose voice brings me to tears everytime I hear "This Moment." "Temporary" is another song which stood out, as it's lyrics are so profound and haunting. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!! =)

  • Best CD I've heard in a long time!
    author: Karen Russell

Discovered this CD in the city library - and once I played it, I couldn't get enough - I played it through at least 5 times straight the first day I got. Now I've bought it for my collection. The lyrics are intriguing; the melodies match the words in an amazing way; the many artists who sing bring great life to each different piece. This is a CD that anyone who loves musical theatre will love. I find myself humming the tunes long after the CD is over - if I ever stop hitting the repeat key on the player.
