notes

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, Soul is defined as, "A strong, deeply felt emotion conveyed by a speaker, a performer, or an artist." If you are a music fan or more specifically a fan to Soul Music, then you immediately think Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. However, if you are a fan of rap/hip hop and you have been paying close attention, you think Grayco- the epitome of "Rap Soul". While his music isn't the first to carry a message, his messages may overwhelm you as they offer an interesting spin on what is going on in your life. Grayco's songs have been grabbing hearts for years now.

Born Kelvin Gray and raised in Union, South Carolina where he made a living picking cotton, (Yes, cotton!), Grayco is not "new" to the "rap game." His many years of hard work are finally paying off. An integral part of South Case, a rap group from Union, South Carolina, Grayco has been doing this for a minute. To be more accurate, he has been keeping fit, lyrically, since age 14 -listening to the likes of Nas, Celo, Rakim and Jay Z. Living in a relatively remote community in the South, Grayco has managed to merge his lifestyle and love for hip-hop into a very compelling style -a style that has come to be known as "Rap Soul".

After linking up with his partner Ray Murrell, South Case was born. The group managed to release three songs (independently) and achieve airplay in South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, DC and Charlotte. However, they created a local buzz that helped to prepare the people for Grayco: Say My Name See My Face -his solo debut.

Today, Grayco's career is moving quickly. His solo debut is currently in select stores and on the streets. Proclaiming, "The South Just Got Dirtier," he is actively pursuing his dream as he puts South Carolina on the map. While the label tries to penetrate South Carolina and spread his message outward, Grayco is sure to find fans all over as he tours the world. With production from Ray Murrell (South Case), Big Trev and Omar Bender, Grayco's solo debut has already raised many eyebrows in the industry and has been stamped "APPROVED" on the streets. The video to his first single -For Gangstas has just been completed and is being serviced to all local, regional and national video outlets (B.E.T., MTV, Mun2,, etc.).

Grayco's work is well defined. He prefers simple tracks with unusual elements to compliment his style. In "Grimy Love" and "Candy Freak", he achieves this as he spits over these hypnotizing tracks. His music speaks directly to people -making real connections that are truly life-relevant. This is evident in "It's Over", "For Gangstas", and other songs as they share the same chemistry. These songs capture feelings of pain, fear, and happiness with stories that point to people far and near. According to Grayco, "I like to tell a story and talk about life in general. My music is real and I want people to feel to it." In "My Partner", Grayco attacks this "bass'd up" track effortlessly and with the comfort of a seasoned performer. He spits:

"Every since Pro-Keds, I've been running with the old heads/Smoking "O" "Z"s with the old Gs/Even when I didn't blaze, I was lost in their maze/In the middle of the crowd chasing the clouds..."

He goes on to chant,

"...I met a lot of cats with a lot money; smoking, choking, using abusing shit, losing shit; I used to get high and sweared to god I was psychic/never snorted caine cause I was scared I might like it."

As his music career continues to unfold, Grayco's sound will soon manifest itself in every corner of the planet. He is indeed from the South. However, his music is for the world.

The warrior Grayco is giving the world of hip-hop what is needed

  • Nice original peice of work, part gangsta, part smooth, overall solid.
    author: Louis Andre

Grayco has an original style which is good to hear. The cd is a nice peice of original work. The style is more gangsta than hip hop, so for those that prefer styles with a harder, more aggressive edge, this one is recommended. The tone of the album is more on the serious side than club track/head boppin side. Although there are no anthem tracks on this album, it's solid overall and there are no annoying filler tracks on it.

author: I write because I suffer, Inc.

This is good music, from a new artist whose lyricism is heavily inspired by "east coast" styled Hip Hop and his natural southern roots.

  • Hott Grayco is the best thing since sliced bread.
    author: N Gifted

The CD is variation of a Southern blend with a little up North flava. Grayco is versatile with his lyrics and lyrical content.

  • Southern flow with world wide appeal
    author: Too Pretty Music

I picked up this CD after seeing the video for "For Gangstas" on BET. The song was hot, so I took a chance. The CD definitely has some bangers on it - Gritman Music, More!, Grimey Love. It's worth picking it up. I'm hoping Grayco manages to put out a second album.
