WHAT IS THE HARMONICA POCKET?

Harmonica Pocket, the Puget Sound Washington group known for “thoroughly catchy, toe-tapping indie-pop tunes,” announces the release their second children’s album Ladybug One. Ladybug One, winner of a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award, is a truly all-ages album made for kids and adults to listen to together. The album was recorded off the grid using solar electricity and is full of genre-popping originals and twists on traditional folk songs.

From the opening soundscape "The Light of a Firefly" featuring a science lesson presented by an 8 year old, straight into the 60s inspired pop-jazzy "Firefly"; or from the supercatchy horn-laden reggae counting song "Ladybug 123" to the darkest version of the alphabet song (titled "I Love the ABCs") you've ever heard complete with wah-wah guitar and electronic beats, the harmonica pocket consistently takes musical risks and colors outside the lines of what everyone else is doing.

Ladybug One also includes a version of "O Susanna" in 5/4 time with sitar and tabla accompaniment and then chills out listeners with six tracks of "bedtime music" for the napping crowd. During Ladybug One recording sessions, 16 different musicians and 13 young children performed. The colorful cd release contains illustrated liner notes, lyrics, and a letter to listeners viewable here:

The Harmonica Pocket begins with the swinging songs of composer Keeth Monta Apgar. Apgar’s songs are brought to life by a rotating musical pop-gang of friends. The songs then become as diverse as the players who play on them. Along with many other musicians, instruments and sounds, the group’s regular artists include:

Keeth Monta Apgar: lead vocals, acoustic wah-wah guitar, and harmonica
Nala Walla: vocal harmony, dance, and hula hoop
Jon Ryser: saxophone

I read a short review of the CD in Family Fun magazine, listened a little online, and immediately decided to buy it. My two-year-old and I have been dancing and singing. We love it! I plan to use it with my first graders next year, too. It will calm and inspire, I'm sure.

We've been long-time fans of Keeth and his music and we've enjoyed Mary Macaroni for awhile now. Ladybug One is a wonderful new CD. This is the only CD that will calm my 8-month old through the trials and tribulations of colds, infections and teething. It's a heaven-sent gift and our whole family is very grateful! My 4-year old also likes the new version of Firefly which was his favorite song from Mary Macaroni. Keep the amazing tunes and positive messages coming Please!

Love this cd! It's kid's music my 15 month old likes, that doesn't make me insane. She loves "Spiders in my breakfast" and I love the message of "One tree said". I highly recommend this to other moms.

We are new BIG HP fans. We saw them live in our neighborhood and loved their show! We bought the CD and it's quickly become the top of my kids (and my) play list! Keeth and Nala are so creative and their voices are beautiful together. Their lyrics are fun and funny, and the music is really good. It's so good, that I'll keep listening to it after the kids have fallen asleep. And, it doesn't drive me nuts to have the songs in my head all the time, like a lot of "kids" music. If you like Dan Zanes, you'll also really like Harmonica Pocket! Their styles of "family music" make it enjoyable for everyone to listen to!
