notes

The Hathaways have been an active musical entity in the Dayton area for over 10 years. They have played nightclubs, wedding receptions, charity events, concerts, county fairs, outdoor festivals, street fairs, company picnics and corporate parties and even produced two CDs of original music. The name 'Hathaways' is familiar to most everyone involved in the local music scene. However, with the passage of time and changes in personnel, the group's musical focus has gone from an acoustic/folk and Jimmy Buffet- style party band to an extremely versatile rock band that can handle a vast spectrum contempory radio hits, from swing to grunge to acoustic numbers, as well as cover classic rock favorites. As always, performances are liberally sprinkled with original music from past and upcoming CDs.

The Hathaways have added two new guitarist/lead vocalists over the past 2 1/2 years. They are Chuck and Barry Drake, brothers who have played together for years in well-known groups such as 'Taxi Dancer', 'Goin' Home', and 'Diver'. Although strong vocal arrangements have been a trademark of the Hathaways for years, Chuck and Barry have managed to raise the standard for the band. And the versatility and excitement afforded by their tandem lead guitar work and vocals produces the visual and musical equivalent of having two front men in the band.

The Hathaways live act comes complete with a light show, and Kenny Rice has upgraded his keyboard set-up to include one of the finest digital keyboards available, the Kurzweil 2000. In addition, they have a top-of-the-line sound system. The band also publishes a periodic newsletter and maintains a mailing list of over 450 patrons and fans, which contributes to well-attended performances in the Dayton area.
Tom Baer, Tom Dempsey and Kenny Rice remain as the core members of 'The Hathaways' of old in what is now considered to be the strongest line-up ever. They are always looking for new opportunities to expand their audience, and you will not be disappointed with their performance or drawing power. Visit their website, www.thehathaways.com for a listing of their upcoming performances.

Tom Baer:Tom is the band's drummer/sound engineer/producer/stategic planner. He has played drums for bands such as'Sunnuva" and 'The Decades', and was the sound engineer for 'Flyweil', 'The Pulse', and 'Zummo'. He produced 'The Pulse's first album, as well as the first 'Hathaways' CD. He also one of the principal vocalists in the band.

Tom Dempsey: The 'other' Tom plays bass, sings, and is one of the band's contributing songwriters. He was a founding member of 'The Hathaways' and a band-mate of Tom Baer's in 'Sunnuva'.

Barry Drake: Barry is one of the guitarist/vocalists that front the band. If an Eric Clapton tune or Stevie Ray Vaughn number is requested, he is the obvious man for the job. He can swing like Brian Setzer or provide the drama required for a 'Queensryche' ballad or play mandolin on 'Maggie Mae'.

Chuck Drake: Chuck is the guitarist/vocalist who carries the lion's share of the lead vocals because of his versatility in covering a variety of styles, from 'Doobie Brothers' to 'Candlebox' to 'Aerosmith'. He is currently the principal songwriter of the band's original material and can hold his own as a soloist as well.

Kenny Rice: Kenny's formidable talents on the keyboard are what distinguish 'The Hathaways' from most every other band in the area. He can duplicate the feel of nearly every musical style imaginable, from honky tonk piano to Keith Emerson's Hammond organ to a full orchestra. He was
the founder of 'Flyweil', and has performed in nearly every musical capacity there is, from church organist to 'Up With People' cast member to guest musician in the 'Tonight Show' orchestra. And he can sing Warren Zevon just like Warren Zevon.

  • Hooked on The Hathaways!

I was introduced to the band recently by my best friend-she personally knows Kenny and Kathy Rice. I play my In Decent Condition CD a lot, I like all the songs, but my favorite is 98.6" Burn. Jam that on a good system, and it's almost like The Hathaways are right there in the room. The CD is nicely mixed, sound quality is excellent, and it's a great energy booster for those lazy days! Hathaways Rock!!

  • Great! Loved It

I order two of these to give one to my daughter. Tom Baer is her uncle. Use to listen to him play a lot. All of you are great. I want more...

  • This Album is a pivot point for one of the greatest rockbands of all times

I have been folowing this band for a few years now and have to say ,they are AWESOME! There is a get up and dance feel at all of there shows. They really know how to get the audience involved, making the Hathaways terrific! I would love to hear more originals from this band.

Loved this CD! My very favorite ones are "Momma" and "That Kinda Girl." Least favorite is "Mystery Man." I tend to like the faster ones the best--they really rock!

  • kenny rice is my hero.
author: Alex Sator.. Guitarist/writer For Trial Balloon

my grandfather used to tell me about the legendary performances of flyweil and sunnuva.. no seriously when i was in high school i used to STAND IN THE ALLEY outside of a local bar called the echo to hear the two bands.. they could write great cutting edge originals.. and they could play the most demanding songs.. EXACTLY.. i have never seen a cover band equal what those two bands could do and i have toured and played for the better part of my 42 years on earth.. kenny rice for example played karn evil9 by emerson, lake and plamer.. and not only were the parts ver batim.. but HE SOUNDED LIKE HIM.. he looked like a composite of rick wakeman and cousin it though.. but what a guy. and the record is hot where it needs to be hot.. mellow where it should be mellow.. sensual when you want your old ladies full attention.. these are professional musicians people.
