Some folks say these two tired souls crawled out the portland shanghai tunnels, back to repay the city's watering holes with sweet odes to sin and salvation, breathing the melodies that have always been sung, releasing others that always will be sung, in other words...
In the spring of 2001, Hillstomp was born in a basement in SE Portland, OR. It was the bastard child of Henry Kammerer and John Johnson's mutual need to make music and drink beer. Within a few weeks the Guitar/"Drum" duo played their first open mic at the green room in Portland to a rousing and slightly scary response. Unfortunately, John's drumset (cardboard box, plastic bucket and weber grill lid) didn't survive the ordeal so the pair went back under the basement stairs to build some new drums and practice.
In June of 2002 Hillstomp emerged from the dust and dark with a raucous brand of hill country blues rock stomp. It is a visceral music that makes you want to stomp your feet, shake your ass and love your neighbor.
After releasing two E.P's in 2003, Hillstomp released their first full-length album "One Word" to a sold out and nearly rabid crowd at the White Eagle in Portland.
Hillstomp is tending a fire that has been smoldering in the hills of northern Mississippi for nearly a century, bringing it alive for another generation. In them you can glimpse the past, present and future of the blues. Their particular brand of North Mississippi trance blues differs drastically from the 12-bar style that your uncle listens to. This shit is different. Even as a duo their sound completely fills a room, making some wonder why so many other bands have so many people standing around.
Whether playing original compositions, traditionals, or blues classics, Hillstomp has managed to craft a distinctive sound that has quickly brought them to the top of Portland's roots, blues and alternative music circles.
The leaders of Portland's do-it-yourself real blues revival need your help. Pick up a copy of the new record today and help spread the word!

"The Blues Buffet"
author: DJ-HalftymeGET THESE CD'S!!!!! Heard these guys three years ago in "05" on a weekend getaway during coal miner's vacation in northern WV. Immediatley myself,my older brother,my two children "then" 8&16,and my dad an ol' fashioned gospel preacher of 52 yrs. hit the parking lot of a local restaraunt and was overcome by a "new" religion. These guys are awesome! Finally after three yrs. of searching, contacted "Bluesville" XM-Radio;got a "prompt" return call and here I am 2:24 a.m. Saturday morning still running through these samples on (CD-Baby) Waiting till mornin' to order all three. I've found my soul, self, and religion all in "OneWord" Set<? down to a self inspired, heaping mess of down home-made real kick'n *ss blues and "get-ur-fill" on and find yourself!!! DON'T KNOW WHAT THESE GUYS WERE DRINKIN' IN THE BASEMENT BUT IT SURE AS HELL GOT THE JOB DONE! CARRY ON!!!!! blues

author: Walter HjelteGreat foot stomping music.Had listened to sampling on CD Baby many times.
10 stars
author: DoublebluesThis is it. That's the music, I was looking for over the past years. Excellent sound, superb mixing. Hypnotizing. I can't stop listening. If these two guys ever should stay at the crossroads, the devil will have no chance!!
Great!
author: BrentThese guys play as if they were taught on the Crossroads!
Have Mercy !!!
author: Jimmy Lloyd ReaGood job here !! It is about time the Real Deal is getting played by younger cats. Go to any so called " Blues" club or Festival this day and age and most ( but not all, thank God ) of the music is Rock, Funk,R and B, and other over rehearsed Candy Ass dung. I've been playing Blues for nearly 40 years and I applaud these young and very hip young players for doing it the right way.'Nuff said--- BUY THIS CD !!!!!!!! Keep playing the REAL DEAL BLUES !!!!
great delta boogie
author: paddlepackgreat mississippi boogie blues, you guys need to come to the shed blues fest in ocean springs, mississippi, you'd fit right in.

i can't stop moving!
author: katemy friend turned me on to these guys less than a week ago... and i've already bought both of their cds! i haven't been this excited about a band in a long time - hillstomp is invigorating, yet soothingly hypnotic (or is that hypnotically soothing?). this music speaks to its listener(s). i can't stop tapping my toes! i can't stop shakin' my arse! buy it. you'll love it.
Funky,Punky Blues!
author: LisaIf I could give out 6 stars I would. I can't wait for their next CD! It is one of those CD's you would want if you were stranded on an island and could only take a couple CD's. I love it, my teenagers love it and so does the eight year old. Cant' beat that!
great punk blues
author: joeythe best way to describe this cd is delta blues ran througha punk rock coffee filter and washed down with a cold glass of beer.
Great Bluegrass/Blues combo
author: kvogtA co-worker turned me on to this CD. He liked the Bluegrass sound,I liked the Blues sound. These guys rock. I hope to catch them live soon. I recommend this CD to any Blues fan.
This is really the blues with a kick
author: jcantiochThese guys get it right. Like my other favorites, the Black Keys and the North Mississippi All Stars, they have the North Delta channel fine tuned. The only negative on the Hillstomp recording was the vocal -- it was often drowned out by the music. But I would really give it a 4.5. Bring it on.
one word not two words
author: david smithexcellent blues cd, really transported me back to college days of listening to old blues records. these guys really pack alot of punch for just 2 musicians, my fav song is flood blues. thanks Mr. Merz for the recommendation
Stripped-down, raw and primal
author: The FamousI came across Hillstomp on MySpace and after one listen of their tunes I went straight to CD Baby and ordered the CD. It hasn't left my CD player since the day I got it. Mesmerizing, hypnotic, primitive and unvarnished -- this is what the blues is all about!
the other other white meat
author: David LindThis cd stayed in my cd player constantly for a week & is still on heavy rotation. Music the way it was always meant to be played.
Can't wait for the next album!
author: Mike HHow about a live DVD??? Aahh! I need more Hillstomp.
High Energy "Stomping" Music
author: GregExcellent CD with High Energetics Enthusiasm that Entertains and "entraps your Ear" ! ...A truly real 'Foot Stomper' as well.
I LOVED this stuff!!!!!
author: Stan BrooksI first heard about this cd from the InRadio collection, #12, and found this cd. The cut I first heard, John Henry, was electrifying, and the rest of the cd has lived up to that promise. It's raw enough to sound real, yet tight enough to let you know these are professional musicians. Looking forward to more of their music, and hope to get down to Portland to hear them live.
Buy it! Buy it now!
author: Elif SonmezThe boyfriend dragged me down to the local cafe/music venue to hear a band he discovered in UCDavis' basement radio station. Geemanee they were good; playing loose and sexy and totally THERE, in the room, stuck in front of the john (of all ignoble places), rockin' and soulin' all over the place. This album is as good as that live show, with the only drawback being unable to watch two revved guys slap away at blues guitar and the best drum kit I've ever seen.
Deep-In-Your-Veins Music
author: GabrieleALL KILLER NO FILLER! Just rough enough to feel personable and intimate, but hits it on the nail like the real deal. This CD always makes me smile; even the moody songs feel great because they're so satisfying. No pretentiousness here. These guys are great live, too. I try to never miss a show when they come down, because every show's been great!
good time ,hip shakin', right atcha music
author: wetbellyexcellent country blues
author: peter radingreat music for a blues lover
good album, better in person
author: PTMI saw these folks in Spring 2004 in Portland. I forgot to pick up the cd while there and had to spend the extra $ to buy it online, but it was worth it. If you think the album is good, go see them live, they are fantastic. If you are coming to the Bay Area drop me an email, I'd certainly go out and support ya'll.
Sick

author: paul jensenit is refreshing to hear somebody, play early blues style, so progressively and get away with it so exellent.
Blue(s)grass
author: MudlowI bought this record on a recommendation and was so glad I did. Like a rootsy Bob Log III. Hope they come to U.K.
Fun, No Frills, Stomping Blues
author: Colin EpsteinThis is some really good lo-fi blues, with the two guys playing their hearts out with some very infectious grooves. Nice assistance on some tracks with things like some fine harmonica, but usually it's just two talented musicians stomping out tunes, and in this case that's plenty.
High Energy
author: DaveNeed a boost of energy for your workout? Here it is. Turn up the volume and pump, run, jog or whatever. Great gravely vocals and driving beat.
Incredible
author: JenniferAbsolutely incredible. Definitely one of my favorite CDs and worth the money without a doubt. For me now, a day isn't complete without some Hillstomp.
Most Excellent CD
author: Mike TerraExcellent, I hope they come to my town soon. Coos Bay,Or.
Just amateurish enough!
author: Shakey DaveJust amateurish enough to make it spontaneous and unrehearsed (both positive!) The energy is overpowering! Love the CD!
Shouldn't it be "Butt Stomp"??
author: The Original SnakeboyI first met these fine fellas at a show we did together in Portland. VERY impressive live energy !!! I think this disc truely defines what these boys are all about. No frills here, just hard drivin', hill stompin', butt kickin' BLUES !!!! I'll listen to it again, soon as I can get up off the floor !!!!
meat and potatoes punk blues
author: Neil HowardI just met these guys tonight at the Utah in San Francisco and they blew me away - now I have the CD and it is beyond good - it just smokes on different levels and yet shakes on a bare, foundational, humming blues slide...rumbles back and forth...I think 'it kicks ass' covers it.
this stuff gets yee a hoppin
author: juanbenaei originally got a taste of hillstomp on bay area (cal) station KFOG, seems the producer found them while walking through golden gate park. he had them on the morning show and i was hooked. being a fan of the likes of left over salmon, radiators and such it was natural to enjoy the sound. but they WAY exceeded my expectations and it is remained in my 5 disk changer for at least four music change/reloads. maybe i now have a 4 disk changer,,, and hillstomp. thanks guys for a great sound, i just tiled my bathroom to it!
interesting music
author: DougThis is a VERY interesting peice of musical art. GREAT BUY!!

Appropriately named and self-ascribed as "Hill country punk blues," these Hillstomp boys shatter expectations with their curiously-intense mix of delta twang, Appalachian drive and feverous momentum, that, in the receptive centers of the brain, might trigger the same sensations as an unusually sour lemon drop, a hit of wasabi or a cinnamon fireball jawbreaker. If you like your music to drive into the bone, to cut through the B.S. and give your ears a work-out, Hillstomp will exceed your pleasures with the a glorious kind of hyped-up, pungent, ear-burning hillbilly-on-steroids perfection. Having your world shook up is always a good thing.

Nice CD, great live band.
author: VincentAfter hearing "Gravedigger's Blues," the MP3 which the band hosts on their website, I bought the album right away. If you're wondering whether to buy this, go get that song, as it's a fine representation of a fine album. I was lucky enough to see them live in Eugene a week or so ago, and they put on a great show. Go see them if you have the opportunity.
One word, Real
author: Jon WooleyThis is the most enjoyable CD I have purchased in a long time. Why? I asked myself. Because its REAL. Excellent work guys.
Homegrown FUNK
author: fishtalesThanks Hillstomp for the gift of One Word. These boys ROCK!!I first stumbled upon them on a street corner in Downtown Portland.Pure Nirvana!!(not the band, the state)
- author: River Man
One Word is spreading East. Ya can't stop your body from getting into the beat. Makes you sit up and take notice. These guys are the real deal.
Great Record, Blues the way R.L. Bunrside meant it to be!
author: Hill Country SoulOne Word reminds one of old timey real blues filtered through Hops and The Ramones. A nearly perfect mix of Hill Country Blues and the spirit of youth. Not to be looked over!
'bout time! I love these guys
author: CharlesIt's soo good to finaly have a full album of songs from Hill Stomp. Wait, no, it's one word, Hillstomp. This one will be in my compact disk player for a while.
Worth your attention
author: LucyThis is an excellent CD, which actually captures the essence of these 2 incredible musicians. You can tell it's not over-produced or highly polished; just great blues music with their own special flavoring. Umm, umm good.
