notes

All Girl Band is one of those unique, spontaneous albums whose charm lies in its brutal confessional appeal.

Channeling something dark and earthy, these provocative songs will make you squirm with their honesty...and any discomfort you feel in listening will make the experience all the more sweet.

Terami's humble voice and quirky melodies are reminiscent of Aimee Mann and Liz Phair with a touch of Tori Amos thrown in for good measure. She cites these artists as inspiration, but her significant piano skills and daring lyrics set her apart from a mere disciple.

When this album was recorded, audiences were just discovering the vicarious thrill of lo-fi, confessional albums. However, Terami didn't know that at the time. She had locked herself in her bedroom with an 8-track over a rainy three day weekend and recorded the entire album. When she emerged, she played what she had to friends who let their jaws drop to the floor. This album is ballsy.

The amateur recording technique adds an innocent and powerful character to the album. The street sounds lend a dirty texture to the songs, but it's the unpolished music that is the most disarming. Terami did not want production to separate her from the listener. She wanted to make the most direct, immediate, and fragile connection possible. And she succeeded.

  • Little Rainbow Bubble...
    author: kasia

Terami's first album is fascinating! It's full of very unique "little rainbow bubbles"that we call songs.Inside of each one there is a little world floating and waiting for you to discover...Jump in!..."In every way she'll find out how to upset you"...

  • Less is more...
    author: Huw

The secret to great music is the spaces inbetween. All girl band, is one simple, yet subtle album that plays on this formula.

  • this is in my must have top 10 cds ever
    author: pepper/inky midnight music

AGB has all the emotional grab of the kind of promising artists (female and male) that we saw in the early 90s (jeffery gaines, tori amos, jeff buckley, fiona apple)but yet there's something both timely and timeless about this album. there's a realism to terami's words and how she infuses them vocally with life that you know there's this live, intense being putting it all together out there, and that's why this record has never bored me. odds are, you'll be taken with it too!

  • maybe we'll all explain together...
    author: Alli

To say Terami bares her soul is an understatement. She begins the album with a blatant description of herself -- all the things that we are, but never talk about. And once she's opened herself up to you, she shares with you the gift of her music. Her unique style runs the spectrum from conversationally honest with "Setting the Record Straight" to achingly beautiful with "What You Think I Need" to playfully quirky with "Girl With the Brain." You will find yourself in her lyrics and perhaps laughing at loud at certain lines. It's pure honesty of human nature -- this is what Terami relates in her storytelling. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes funny, sometimes frightening, but always true.

  • Whatever kind of music you like - buy this!
    author: Allan

This is a cd that anyone can listen to, no matter what genre you normally listen to. I usually listen to noisy, offensive, ear bleed music but it crosses over because all the songs are written and played well - a great artist writing great songs sums it up perfectly. Buy it now.

  • Absolutely magnificent
    author: Ariel

I've never entirely recovered from hearing All Girl Band for the first time. It made an immediate and overwhelming impression on me, which is usually a bad thing since my track record with albums I like immediately is pretty poor. :) But in this case, it just kept getting better and better! I can't recommend Terami's stuff highly enough.

  • Amazing work!
    author: Alex

I was trapped, enslaved, from the first track. Brutally honest lyrics from the get go, and amazing melodies throughout. The arrangements in "vamp" and "borderline", among others, are truly hypnotizing. The wonderful quirkyness of tracks like "girl with the brain" and "witches' brew" keep the cd fun and enjoyable even the 1000th time I play it. One might be compelled to compare "all girl band" with some of Tori Amos' earliest work, but this one has more inventivenes, intemacy, and uniqueness then you'll find in those big label releases. If you're looking for a great melody, get this cd. If you're looking for thought provoking poetry, get this cd. If you want hard rock, e-mail Terami and maybe she'll cover a Nirvana song on her next release, just for you. Just kidding! Get this CD!!!!

  • make it visual....
    author: Eric

Terami Hisrch's debut cd is one that everyone should have the honor of listening to once because after the first time they'll want to listen to it over and over and over! The images these songs create in my mind are something that haven't been evoked since Kristin Hersh entered my Cd player. The music is simple yet very different from the normal "girl with a piano" music and the songwriting is top notch, easily comparable with no one because it's that good. You won't regret listening to this, I promise!

  • Speechless
    author: Angelica Standley

What can I say about this album, that in listening to it you will not know? From the first song to the last Terami opens herself to the listener completely. Her lyrics are thought provoking and raw. It will leave you thanking her for being so truthful. She takes inside her mind and allows you to go within yours and touch places you might have tried to avoid before. Incredible.

  • stunning album
    author: Annabelle

Terami Hirsch is a woman, and like most female musicians, will probably get lumped into some silly, non-existent category of "girl music". Music by girls or for girls? This is music, of course socially and culturally created, but whoever sees it just that way completely mises the point. This is amazing.

  • A Joyride Through Hell
    author: Will G.

A stunning debut album from an enormously talented artist. Though simply produced and arranged, technical excellence is not set aside in favor of emotional clarity and insight; this first offering is not a soul-less, over-produced corporate "girl-band" . Rich, evocative, and haunting, this is a raw and sometimes deceptively simple offering that ranges through a triptych of emotions. Unforgettable. When you buy this album, though, get several -- friends will "borrow" yours!

  • An impressive first album!
    author: Caroline

The music and lyrics are haunting! After several listening sessions I find myself humming the music and wondering what events triggered such powerful emotions and memories. A moving autobiographical epic! Definitely not just girl music.

  • This is what music is about.
    author: David Hooper

This CD is amazing. It's not a collection of songs, it's a album. Definitely personal. Definitely something that you make you think.

  • Beautiful Chaos
    author: Brad M.

Terami's first CD is great. At times chaotic, at other times blissful, the music and arrangement are always captivating. Her voice is sweet and powerful and the lyrics behind the songs are often beautifully uncomfortable. I've never really been an avid listener of "girl music" but this one works for me. You should hear it for yourself. Keep up the good work, Terami!
