About Paul Hosford's jazz guitar CD Emergence...
Paul Hosford was chosen as an "Undiscovered Artist" for his CD Emergence by Guitar Nine Records for February/March 2003. In a review that appears on their website (www.guitar9.com), reviewer Dan McAvinchey states,
"Hosford's command of the fretboard is clearly evident, and his creative arrangements lead to a 'hearing-it-again-for-the-first-time' feeling. There are chord melodies aplenty, as Hosford makes deft single note line connections seem almost effortless. Highlights on the CD include 'Rainy Day', 'Green Dolphin Street', 'Take Five', and his unique treatment of the classic 'Over The Rainbow', which kicks off the album. Sincerity of expression -- that's a good way to describe Hosford's recording efforts on Emergence."
While highlighting Hosford's guitar playing in both solo and ensemble settings, Emergence features Hosford on string bass, flute and 'cello as well. It includes music by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk and many others. Hosford's father, Frank, who recently released his own CD, Blues For George, puts in a guest appearance on piano.
What others are saying about Emergence...
The late Chuck Denson had this to say about Paul's playing on Emergence:
"I'm enjoying listening to it very much. I'm trying to recognize the style but can't do it completely. He reminds me a bit of Tony Mottola, a bit of Johnny Smith. But, with the heavy bass line, he reminds me of an excellent Oregon guitar player named Buddy Fite. Still, he has enough individualism to have a nice style all his own. Among guitar players such as Paul, I'm only a spectator. I feel that he can play anything he wants to play. Most talented and obviously has been dedicated enough to learn a most difficult style of guitar playing. My hat is off to him."
Jazz guitarist and former guitar instructor at Berklee College of Music Steve Carter remarked,
"I liked what I heard.... I like his chords and his moving lines are especially nice."
Jazz guitarist Peter Bouffard said,
"I enjoyed Paul's CD -- especially his solo work. Very adventurous harmony. I really like 'Round Midnight.' My compliments to Paul."
Kansas City guitarist Adam Wilke commented while listening,
"He's good; really good -- a real hipster!"
And jazz pianist/vocalist Tony Gulizia said,
"Great! Exciting! Talented use of chords; something to be proud of!"
About Paul Hosford...
Paul Hosford and his wife, Lori, own and operate their own record label, Painted Heart Music, LLC, which has released 10 full-length CDs and one CD single (as of March 2003). The Hosfords have operated a small recording studio (in which Emergence was recorded) for 16 years, utilizing vacuum tube equipment designed and built by Paul. Hosford plays a number of instruments besides those featured on Emergence, and has composed over 50 musical works. In addition to operating their studio, Hosford performs, teaches guitar, demonstrates stringed instruments in area schools, and tunes pianos.
Hosford's primary musical influence has been his father, jazz pianist and composer Frank Hosford, but he has also been influenced by guitarists such as Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, and Rich Hughes. His main focus has long been on composing and recording his own music (he made his first multi-instrumental recording at age 12), but he has performed in a number of settings, even including an impromptu performance on jazz-legend Ray Brown's string bass at Rick's Cafe' in Chicago when he was 19.
The Hosfords have chosen to reside in Hosford's home town of Albion, Nebraska, in order to raise their family in the nurturing environment this area affords. They have been utilizing the advantages of the Internet for some time now to pursue their musical endeavors from this non-traditional location. They invite you to visit their website (www.paintedheartmusic.com) to hear music from their other albums and learn more about their musical undertakings.
Thank you for your interest in Paul Hosford and Emergence.

You are about to take a journey into the heart and soul of a true artist. Paul Hosford's treatment of the classics on this album is refreshing, yet comfortingly familiar. The music evokes feelings not only of new beginnings, but of coming home as well. I hope you enjoy the magic as much as I have!
After "Take Five" I would like to take all 20+ to my local SPOT!
author: K. Paul - JAZZ/2DaySome of the most distressed sounds blended into a menage-a-cinque. No rest for the senses in EMERGENCE! Somebody gonna love this. It washes one's soul and cleanses all remnants of ROCK N ROLL from the vessel. No HIP HOP here, a true reincarnation of free musical thought. Paul ranks with them. Taking it to a deeper, kinder, spiritual place.
Clearly a Talent that will impact future musicians...
author: Layne GrosethIs it possible to create new classics out of songs that are already considered classic? With Paul Hosford and EMERGENCE, not only is it possible but it happens. Not a bad interpretation in the bunch and some styling that is unique and a real addition to the music world. Check it out!
