notes

"Gloomy and beautiful, to absorb person's sadness, many gentleness" ...(Chinese review)

Hush Collector were formed in Brighton UK by ex Mojave 3/Sing-Sing pianist Poppy Gonzalez and Brighton singer/songwriter Katie Mummery. Introspective, restrained and spacious, their songs are warm, melodic and heartfelt and generally take a lethargic tempo. Hushed vocal harmonies as one reviewer put it 'see the the girls duetting with supernatural intuition'..

These first songs, released on their own Candy Cone label have received a warm response and great reviews.

This music is "perfect for 'the after the party and the morning after" ...

  • gloomy and beautiful, likes to burn in slowly. many gentleness
    author: rachel, (china)

Two females, has the delightful blurred sound, has fills the sense of reality the voice. Hush Collector sets up in England, small and clean seashore city. Their music, their singing sound, also just like the sea breeze, lightly, lets the person unconsciously compare on both eyes, urges the person to go to sleep. Two person of perfect busy vocal duets, dense fog dim atmosphere, gloomy and beautiful, if the dream lingers the note, is clean from time to time, from time to time makes noise. The perception also is moved, likes to burn in slowly "the" cloud... Hush Collector, the song if, the silencing, the silencing, so is so exquisitely attractive.. Perhaps their music, can cancel you to the mazzy star recollection, they have another kind of flavor, was short to absorb person's sadness, many gentleness...

  • excellent - both genuine and compelling at the same time
    author: Mike Spall - Southscene

" Damn it, I’ve had this CD a little while now and only just put it on. Hush Collector are excellent... it’s so refreshing to suddenly discover something that straddles both genres but also manages to be both genuine and compelling at the same time. Soft, lilting acoustic grooves. Lullabies and subtle bombast abound throughout. Title track ‘Flowby’ is excellent. ‘Mountain Song’ takes on a haunting, ambient journey. The instantly memorable Poppy Gonzalez (is that her ‘real’ name?) and Katie Mummery sing with that same whimsical charm as Kim Gordon and even Dido. ‘It Don’t Matter’; like Portishead writing a soundtrack for a Paul Thomas Anderson movie and ‘I Go Blind’ with the lyric, ‘we’ve got something special’ couldn’t be more apt".

  • Delicate girl voice, a very nice effect.
    author: Evil Sponge

There are a ton of musicians out there who never get the spotlight, but that doesn't mean that these individuals are less talented. In this light, consider Hush Collector, a band consisting of Katie Mummery and Poppy Gonzalez who has been a background musician for such noteworthy acts as Mojave 3 and Sing-Sing. Here they step into the spotlight, and do it well. Flowby is their debut EP, and it carries on in the light, country-influenced folk music that Mojave 3 have mined so well. Here they do four songs of their own. This is pleasant stuff. You should check out this EP. Delicate girl vocals... some scattered pianos and overdriven guitars...pretty tunes - A very nice effect.

  • a pinch of blues, a touch of class and a little shoegazing ...
    author: Marcus Pan

...a pinch of blues, a touch of class, a little amount of shoegazing, hiding behind a folky mindset in a chilled-out background...I do like melancholly and well-written lyrics. ...The songs are smooth and well laid out and only minimally processed. Recorded live to tape quite possibly and not messed around with too much by so called engineers giving you something you didn't sound much like the way it started. It's very honest...Slow and chilly, Hush Collector treat their music with respect for what it is and not what it could sound like in a million dollar an hour studio. If you've ever seen any of the Corona commercials - the couple on the beach, kicking back, ignoring the cellphone, watching the waves - add a few instruments and that's a Hush Collector recording session - Matter of fact, Hush Collector is an excellent name for their sound.

    author: Monk - Independents Only

Haunting slow drums, acoustic guitars and a soft, angelic voice are the main focus at the start and end of "Flowby" from Brighton, England's Hush Collector. The brilliantly written and orchestrated songs bring to mind a modern day Cowboy Junkies minus the country twang. The songs skim into your head and find your emotions bringing you to a calm by the finish of the disc. Hush Collector wonderfully displays the heart and soul of their art on their debut "Flowby" which, after one listen, will have you hooked. R.I.Y.L.: Cowboy Junkies, Azure Ray, Mazzy Star

  • a smouldering explosion of Cowboy Junkies melancholy & Calexico’s emotional mess
    author: Jeremy Chick

Soft bittersweet pleadings full of regret and a loss of hope- delicate guitars twist and burn in a smouldering explosion of Cowboy junkies melancholy and Calexico’s emotional mess…

  • Breathy, spacious, gracefully woven & lightly discordant-a masterful debut
    author: Church of Girl

Hush Collector will lull you away with haunting melodies that swirl against subtle country harmonies or an edgy blues guitar... Their 4 track ep, Flowby, is a masterful debut. The breathy vocals, whirling guitars, delicately percussive piano and soft instrumentation course effortlessly. Sort of like a bit of The Cowboy Junkies tossed with Mazzy Star. The songs are spacious, gracefully woven with a lightly discordant thread to keep you slightly on edge.

  • Sparse yet rich, intense and very appealing.
    author: Tone and Groove

Hearing is an amazing sense. Unless you've seriously abused your ears, you can hear over an incredible range - Hush Collector know a powerful secret: the less you fill this huge range, the more you hear. Three of the four songs on Flowby feature whispery female vocals, solitary percussion rather than full drum kits, and pulsing, atmospheric keyboards and fuzzed guitars fading in and out of the background. The result is sparse yet rich, intense and very appealing. The last song on the disc, "I go blind", is basically folk, with vocal, picked acoustic guitar, shaker, and a single backing vocal track; oddly enough, it doesn't seem out of place.

  • A magnificently moody ep,
    author: Abi Rhodes

A magnificently moody EP - sporting a wonderfully plaintiff female lead voice. The four songs field a varied faire of fascinating heartaches and mental pains. The general feel of the record is downbeat and understated – Just the thing for the garret lifestyle of modern art-school youth.

  • tingly & utterly delicious - a thing of the most gorgeous gossamer beauty...
author: Tim Peacock - Whisperin' & Hollerin'

The four tracks on this debut Flowby" EP are warm and organic material and headily addictive - The title track is vibe-y and dreamy with resonant brushed drums, the guitar textures clean and noisy seemingly all at once and Katie and Poppy duetting with a supernatural intuition. "I'm shedding the coat that the world made me wear and I feel fine," they smoulder at one stage - and with this track reminding favourably of the hymnal delights The Cowboy Junkies and Poppy's old muckers Mojave 3 have previously thrilled us with, well it's impossible to disagree. magically it's dwarfed by what follows. "Mountain Song" is great again: spooked, potent and otherworldly and the kind of thing Mazzy Star did so well on "She Hangs Brightly", but with added warmth and harmony lulling and some stinging guitar stabbing you in the side. The closing "I Go Blind" is different again: built around a Bert Jansch-style acoustic guitar figure and makes for an excellent blues-y postscript. Sandwiched between these two though, is your reviewer's personal favourite in "It Don't Matter". After a hushed "1,2,3, 4" intro, it gradually assembles itself - via amoebic piano, tinkly toy shop cymbals and wraith-like vocals - into a thing of the most gorgeous gossamer beauty. It moves forward with a ghostly determination, cocks a snook at the Velvets and The Concretes and even finds room for the occasioanal atonal guitar scree to keep you on your toes. It's tingly and utterly delicious and makes it clear Hush Collector are a gentle presence you simply cannot ignore.

  • Recalls The Waifs or Be Good Tanyas.
    author: Jason MacNeil

This four-song EP is a rather good offering of Americana thanks to the great pipes of singer and multi-instrumentalists Poppy Gonzalez and Katie Mummery on the light, evocative title track that recalls the Cowboy Junkies mixed with Dido. There's a arty yet roots-filled mix on the ensuing "Mountain Song" with the hushed, sultry and sensual harmonies leading the way, the best is saved for last on the catchy "I Go Blind" that recalls The Waifs or Be Good Tanyas.

  • 'I Go Blind' could be a timeless English folk song. ..
    author: Tasty Fanzine

...lush south coast ambient rock massages tasty's ears...&and is personal enough fit snugly in your living room. The vocal harmonies in 'Mountain Song' are at once both discordant, threatening and gently soothing.'I Go Blind' could be a timeless English folk song.

  • I'm left wanting even more of these lush, hushed sounds.
author: Jason Morehead - Opus Zine

Hush Collector is an incredibly accurate moniker for this trio, as their music is just that - a collection of quiet, reflective songs marked by sexily hushed (npi) vocals, wheezy atmospherics, and slowburning progressions...However, the trio move beyond simple folky/slowcore territory. Their best moments, "Mountain Song" and "It Don't Matter", instead recall music that's even more removed and foreboding, not to mention slower and more measured - the pastoral sounds of Talk Talk and Mark Hollis' solo work... And while the band knows how to restrain themselves, they also know when to release, allowing a storm of shivering electric guitar to erupt at just the right point before fading away again...Flowby only contain four songs, so it serves as only the barest of introductions to the group's music. But as I listen to a track like "It Don't Matter", I'm left wanting even more of these lush, hushed sounds. Hush Collector has built for themselves a very solid foundation, and hopefully, it's just a sign of even better things to come.

    author: Americana UK

...In the hazy drunken moments whilst your thoughts are falling out of your head and scuttling under the bed you need something to soundtrack it...the rich vocal a siren song to your hazy memory. Pitched somewhere between Mazzy Star and Azure Ray, it results in something poised on the edge of prettiness with enough disturbing whispers to keep you interested.

Hush Collector creeps into your head with stealth. Before you realize it, you're caught in their atmospheric trap, mezmerized by the mysterious solitude created by their music....
