Stories may have characters, yet the focus is often away from its source of voice, the Narrator.
This voice, one of trust and power, will often speak with wisdom and objectivity.
Yet who is to say that she must stay unbiased and heartless?

Jane's debut solo album is named after its emotive voice and narrator, Teargirl. She will sing through this book of tales in a voice of belief, question, and passion. The details of each character is translated into sounds and songs that are humbly tender with devilish fantasy.

Raised in Hong Kong, Jane began playing piano age 4. With a noticeably keen ear for music she later began teaching herself voice by observing and imitating her idol, Anita Mui. After years of practice and formal education she received her music degree from San Diego State University. Upon graduation Jane began making waves in the San Diego music scene as part of the power pop duo Jason And Jane by opening for the likes of Jason Mraz, Lisa Sanders, and Emm Gryner and quickly establishing her reputation as a singer/songwriter of merit.

On Valentine's Day 2004, Jane officially launched her solo career. After only composing for a year, she has already shared stages with local well-knowns Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Robin Henkel [SDMusicAwards Best Blues Album], Greg Laswell [SDMusicAwards Best Recording], Danielle Lo Presti and the Masses [IndieByDesign], and was invited to play at festivals such as the first annual SD Indie Music Festival, GoGirlsMusic Festival 2004, and Desert Festival.

With unconventional instruments such as tablas, toy piano, harp, harpsichord, pipe organ pedals, brass, & strings, jane creates a story-book that has a life of its own.
The album was produced by Jane and Aaron Bowen, recorded & engineered by Bowen on a small 16-track Akai with real instruments, no digital editing, and no pitch corrector.

The first time we saw Jane play, she was on stage with Dustin Shey, performing a rendition of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights," using a 10-note marimba and a toy piano. And while her sexy, captivating voice does not reveal her quirky yet undeniably charming personality, her music does offer an ample view into the inner workings of her complex imagination. Jane's new album, Teargirl, is rich with metaphor, capitalizing on stunning vocals to bring elements of fantasy to life through simple stories. In light of her first full-length, Jane launched an entire Web site dedicated to the album, where she provides fans with an up-close look at the concept behind each track, the challenges while recording and those who helped her bring it to life. Her explanations are certainly as eloquent as her craft. An absolute must-hear.

Teargirl finds this seasoned neophyte knocking it out of the solo artist ballpark far enough to clear the wall into the bleachers, but not enough to put the excessive pressure of an unbeatable precedent on future efforts. In other words, it's just about as ideal a debut as it gets....."

  • Buy Her CD but SEE HER LIVE

    CD Baby, (a really cool store by the way) asks you to "Please keep it short, and about this CD, not the artist in general" when writing your review. Yet Jane asks in her blog, 'What do You imagine when you listen to the music?' I like Jane's request. Honestly, I find it difficult to keep any description short, and run the risk of repeating adjectives so common to most reviews of a great and soulful artist. Jane is herself. If asked "who does she sound like" a list of names might flood my mind, but no single one does her sound justice. Perhaps it's because whether just playing her music in the car, or hearing it live, Jane's own special talent and heart comes through. I've been a follower of her music since the early days her and Jason (now J Turtle) toured as Jason & Jane. They charmed cafe's and you could just FEEL the potential in both of them. Jane walks into your life carrying a backpack and a song, her stories, her heart. That will always be the Jane Lui I will remember, and that vivid clarity is what comes across in her music. Her first solo project is an expression of pure heart, some dazzlingly sharp bluesy or jazzy songs mixed in, with just the right edge to them. They leave you happy, even as soulful ones cleanse you with their compassion. It's just the kind of music you'd hope to find as you wandered the back streets of some big city & found a little known club where the real music was still being played. Populated by artists having a true jam session where the cellophane is off & the slick packaging forgotten. It's just all soul. Her voice is rich, of that there is no doubt. Just listen to it and the metaphors and adjectives used in the reviews will all make sense. But you have to listen. Words, however clever, eloquent, or articulate just can't do real music, especially hers, justice. Every piece on this album is a treasure. I HIGHLY recommend hooking into her website & seeing her LIVE, if you can. You won't regret the little effort it might take, & Jane is very open and friendly, & her site reflects that. I LOVE independent music, because you are blessed to run into talents where the cord of heart and soul hasn't been cut from their song, their story. Music expresses something subtle and crucial, something eternal. Music is not as precious as life, but it is something close to it, because it gives voice beyond what a camera can comprehend. When it wanders freely it is the proper translator of life, the heart of our existence. I'll never forget her sitting on a extra thick Yellow Pages to balance the seat she had to use with her keyboard at her last performance. It didn't phase her a bit. In fact, it was perfect. Jane's Teargirl CD does just that with life. Uses whatever is at hand to share the moment, to connect, to feel, to experience it all compassionately. This isn't just one sound, it is many. Jane Lui obvious connects empathetically with life and the people in it, and it shows in her music.

    Jane is an incredible performer to watch live: she is willing and able to personate the emotions, however deep and complex, of the lyrics and music, giving the message of a song an honest voice. Her first solo cd delivers an equally dedicated performance, revealing an elegant yet frank artistry. The accompanying musicians and technical quality of the cd are also excellent, the songs are moving and sometimes provocative.

    Just when you think you couldn't get more choked up from its hauntingly perfect piano arrangements and devastating lyrics, TEARGIRL launches into "Playing God", one of the gems on this album. This debut from Jane will call to mind favorite female musicians of pianos and choruses past, but brings an energy, intensity and rhythm we haven't heard in, well, ever. Tori who??? The production quality on the album is stellar. Noticeable. See track 2 for a compelling example. Jane is the stuff local legends are made of -she won't be in SD for long, mark my words on that one. And if you're wondering, no, I don't know her. I saw her play once and eagerly awaited her cd -- for a year, no less. I wasn't disappointed and you won't be either.

    A huge fan of Jane's past vocal work, it was no surprise that her debut solo album would be a masterpiece coming out the gate. Smooth as silk, her vocal performance on Teargirl is clearly inspired! Her songwriting covers a lot of territory and takes the listener through a range of emotions. Kudos on this debut album...it's well worth a listen!!!

    Jane's CD leaves you yearning to see her live. From the very quirky sounds of her tiny piano to her melodic voice, the CD doesn't cease to entertain. It's great to hear her voice accompanied my so many great musicians- trumpet players, drummers and harpists. I'm glad this CD is finally out!

    Jane's music is beautiful. First introduction was from my boyfriend Michael. Fell in love with Jane's voice, her music, and her personality. While she is a character (watch her perform live), I knew I wouldn't be disappointed in Teargirl. It's impossible to be. Phaedon and Playing God are two favorites, but dammit, the whole CD is chock full of music that feels so personal. Great job, Jane!

    the growth of voice in the CD is what will keep your ears hungering for more. each song speaks a differnt story; it's true that jane is known to merely be the vehicle for these song characters to come out. although quite capable to carry the entire CD completely a cappella, the joining of her voice and her piano creates an enchanting coexistence. the collaboration with other artists to bring in horns and strings completes the fairy tale that is teargirl. this cd has been on repeat in my car, at my work, and in my stereo at home since its release 3 weeks ago. and each note stirs up emotions as if it's the first time hearing them
