  • "Her voice is lovely...her song selections are most pleasing..."
    author: Noelle Porterfield

I like good music. It kind of sends me to another place beyond my workaday world and the usual responsibilities of life. That's why I love this CD so much. Jaymie Meyer (whom I heard of through a friend who claims to know what's good when it comes to singing) fits the bill in every way. Her voice is lovely, her song selections are intelligent and most pleasing, and her arrangements are just superb. I can listen to these cuts over and over again. They're as fresh as ever -- and there's always a song to match the mood I'm in. Maybe there's no perfection on this planet. But "What You'd Call a Dream" comes close (that's why I give it 4 stars!)

  • "Music like it oughta be!"
    author: Fred Mustard-Katz

I'm a city guy but we always spend the Thanksgiving holiday with great friends in the Berkshires. This year, amidst all the turkey and charades and fun, my friends introduced us to the music of one Jaymie Meyer. I had heard of this artist in past years, knowing something of New York cabaret as I do. So I was expecting to hear the work of a solid professional. Let me tell you, however: Ms. Meyer is great. Her voice is a pure pleasure to behold. Her song selection is eclectic, fresh and utterly charming. Her arrangements are fabulous. These songs are in turn fun, bright, emotional and altogether exquisite. At this point, "My Favorite Year" is my favorite song. But that might change as at least 3 or 4 more are in close contention. In one long weekend in the Berkshires, I must have listened to her CD a dozen times -- and I still want more. If you love songs and singing done really well, I strongly urge you to check out Ms. Meyer's CD. This is truly music like it oughta be. And if you hear of any local (New York) appearances that Ms. Meyer is going to make, do yourself a favor and check it out. I'll see you there, for sure!

  • "Excellence by every standard..."
    author: Blanche de la P.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to spend time with some friends who are especially "music literate." They told me of a particular CD that I must not miss by any means. It was Ms. Meyer's "What You'd Call A Dream." So I heeded their words and I'm forever glad that I did. Ms. Meyer has "the pipes" and her choice of music is exquisite. For seemingly any mood, any experience, any time of day or even (perhaps especially?) in the solitude of night. I was especially taken by "My Favorite Year." Indeed, the lyric is haunting and it reminds me of my own favorite year. Listen to the song, feel it, and you'll undoubtedly know just what I mean. But the entire CD is superb. In fact, this is excellence by every standard. As is Ms. Meyer. I hope she'll do another. You can be sure that I'll be waiting for it.

  • Now THIS is a voice!
    author: David Bruce

Some friends of mine who claim to know real music told me that this CD, and this artist, Ms. Jaymie Meyer, are the real thing. So I bought it and I listened to it. Then I listened to it another twelve times. Ms. Meyer sounds great at first...and she just keeps on getting better! The selection of songs is first rate. There's romance, fun, suggestion, emotion...and real stories to tell. The music and lyrics are superb.Plenty of fodder for the brain and for the heart. And Ms. Meyer's gorgeous voice is that of a singer, for real. Rosie Clooney is gone, yes. And that's cause for sadness among music lovers. But take heart. As long as there's talent as alive as Ms. Meyer's, there's something wondrous for all to hear.

  • Marvelous, superb and altogether wonderful
    author: Chic Yodler

Jaymie Meyer is a fabulous singer, this CD is filled with outstanding songs (a near perfect combination of old and new, funny and tender, joyous and wistful) and the overall experience is enormously pleasing. I'd call Ms. Meyer a throwback to singers of yore, the ones with extraordinary talent who really felt that which they were singing. But while Ms. Meyer does indeed share all these great traits with some of the very, very best, she's not a throwback or an iteration or a model on anyone else's coattails. Ms. Meyer is truly a marvelous, superb and altogether wondrous original. Buy this CD and enjoy it forever.

  • Jaymie, New York and a Little Night Music
    author: Garry Heath

There's something to be said for clinical insomnia. A long-time sufferer, I'm familiar with the remedies--wine at bedtime, a sleeping pill and the relentless calculation of woolen mammals. Nothing worked. Finally, I realized I wasn't sleeping for a very simple reason: I didn't want to. Hours spent in the that comatose complacency were hours when I might--heaven forbid--miss something. Turns out, I was. In the pre-dawn darkness, my emotional receptors were suddenly open to impulses I ignored during the day. I read books. I viewed films. And I listened to music. Music seemingly made for New Yorkers, but oddly out-of-place in the cacophony of Manhattan's daytime bustle. These were melodies made for moonlight. The music of Portia Nelson, Amanda McBroom, Bobby Short and Nancy LaMott. That's how I discovered Jaymie Meyer. Okay, that's a lie. Sort of. I actually met Jaymie through our mutual friend and mentor, Portia Nelson. But I discovered her--which is to say that I fell for her, hook, line and say-the-word-and-I'll-leave-my-wife while watching her perform at Don't Tell Mama. I say this without jeopardizing my marriage. My wife knows Jaymie and frankly, if it meant I would hear that beautiful, lilting voice on a daily basis, she would help me pack. Barring that, I'll settle for listening to "What You'd Call a Dream." Again and again and again. This is music best heard in an intimate setting--huddled in a candlelit cabaret, gathered around the piano at a cocktail party, or sitting in a quiet living room watching a blood-red sun rise over Manhattan. Trust me, I know. Unlike so many, Jaymie's voice doesn't grab you by the lapels. It reaches out like a caress. Teasing, perfectly enunciated and eminently seductive. Seamlessly blending soaring mezzo with depth-charged alto, she deftly delivers each song's lyrical arc, from the deceptively simple cadence of "The Friendliest Thing" to the playful tease of "Miss Byrd" to the compelling poetry of Irving Berlin's "How Deep is the Ocean." She brings skill to selection as well, with a roster of songs whose nuance forcefully showcases her range. The poignant "My Favorite Year" and "Ship in a Bottle," each rife with regret and longing, are countered by the self-deprecating wordplay of "The Lies of Handsome Men." Portia Nelson's deeply personal, "It's the Little Things" will tear open your heart, but is soon followed by the tentative optimism of "No Fear," the name-dropping whimsy of "Beyond Compare" and the sweet, painful nostalgia of the title track. An exquisite beauty blessed with infinite charm, presence and sex appeal, Jaymie remains unabashedly "old school" in her music. She restores to us a time when New York nights were a thing of glittering pearls, tossed sable and champagne toasts, underscored with music that made one smile and swoon at once. A thing of mythic romance. Myths, of course, are often born of truth. Perhaps now, we need that New York again. Now, in the city that, like many of us, doesn't sleep, we need a New York unembarrassed by romance--and unbowed by the dark. --Here's to Jaymie, and more sleepless nights.

  • Warm ... Intelligent ... Sincere.
    author: Maryland Fan

Jaymie Meyer's rich mezzo could melt an iceberg. In her debut solo CD, the accomplished artist gets to the heart of the lyrics, infusing them with warmth, intelligence and sincerity. It matters not whether she is reflecting ("Ship in a Bottle"), reminiscing ("What You'd Call a Dream"), mourning a lost love ("It's the Little Things") or confronting a painful truth ("The Lies of "Handsome Men"). The well-chosen selections marry old ("I Got Lost In His Arms") and new ("My Favorite Year"), saucy ("Miss Byrd") and sophisticated ("You Fascinate Me So"). Miss Meyer's meticulous enunciation and phrasing are a joy. She could teach others in her field a thing or two.

  • Truly lovely.

Ms. Meyer has a truly lovely and unique voice which is extremely well represented by the selections on this most moving and inspiring CD. Enjoy!!!

  • She has her whole act together.
    author: M. E. Scherl

Ms. Meyers delivers. Her CD "What You Call a Dream" combines melody, lyric and vocal execution with exceptional grace, skill and style. Ms. Meyers made all of the right choices, and has the talent to give each number a perfect delivery. Her voice is endlessly expressive... simply magical! "What You Call a Dream" is just that.

  • MORE THAN A GIFT!!!
    author: Denise Zorich

I received this CD as a Xmas (2001) gift from my brother who lives in NYC and knows Jaymie personally. This CD is so much more than a gift! It is like having a dear friend close by every time I play it. Depending on the song, Jaymie's voice can be soothing, melodic, comforting, haunting, upbeat and even funny. I laugh and I cry; exactly what one should do when you are in the company of a good friend! I can't say enough about how much I personally relate to this CD and the songs/lyrics that deal with real life experiences, loves and loss. It touches my soul! Denise Zorich, Phoenix, AZ

  • funny, dreamy, emotional
    author: Gail Jaffe

One of my favorite CD's. The range of humor and emotion in Jaymie's choices gives the listener a delightful potpourri of musical pleasure. Her voice is clear and her delivery of each song is like hearing a story that really happened. I love it!

  • Elegant and romantic. Could be called a dream itself.
    author: S. C. Cole

Haunting, lulling melodies. A perfect compliment to an intimate candlelight dinner. A fine balance of fun (Miss Bird) and nostalgia (How Much Do I Love You)." Ms. Meyer delivers sensitive renditions of so many fine songs.

  • Thank You. Bravo
    author: William F.beckley

Thank YOu, Thank You Ms. Meyer for a lovely, refreshing C.d. we love your clarity. In todays Rap & garbled lyrics, it is wonderful to hear your sweet voice and story telling reminiscent of of some of the other great Ladies of song. "As they would say in a theater: More! More! Bravo!!

  • A cd that will take you on a journey
    author: Christina

This music is transforming. The songs put you in a joyful state of mind while I also found them very inspiring. The singer has a beautiful voice that she knows how to utilize.. get the cd and see for yourself!

  • Jaymie has one of the most lovely, rich and immpressive voices in caberet.
    author: Jesse N. Holmes

The pairing of the voice and the songs makes this CD a hit. It is so refreshing to hear material of great quality served so well by a voice so rich and rare. Sometimes I play one of the ballards during the stretch portion of one of the exercise classes I teach. Sometimes I have the class moving to "YOU FASCINATE ME SO." Always after playing the CD in class someone will immediately want to know who is singing. Once I even had to stop class and tell them the name of the singer and album because they would let me continue class until I told them. Sometimes at the beginning of class someone will ask if I will play songs from the CD. One member of the class told me that she went out and bought the CD and that she now knows every word to all the tunes and that she has given the CD to several friends as gifts.

  • Sexy and fun, uniquely melodic
    author: Cutler

I found Jaymie Meyer's CD to be a refreshing alternative to cliche versions of covered standards. The songs are sexy and fun.

  • Like spending an evening with an old friend
    author: Tims

Ms Meyer has made an outstanding choice of songs. You will play this CD and never be tempted to press the skip button. Do yourself a favor and add this to your CD collection. Her version of My Favorite Year alone is worth the price of this CD.

  • I love this CD.
    author: Hugh Murphy

I enjoyed the CD all the way through. A delightful collection of music performed by an exceptional talent. Ms. Meyer sings with feeling. Tracks such as "Lies of Handsome Men" and "Stars and the Moon" will hit you in the heart but my favorite track of all is "Miss Byrd". This CD is a rare treat.

  • What You'd Call A Dream is wonderful, full of life and heart. I especially like
    author: Carylanne

What You'd call A dream is full of life. A wonderful selection of songs that truly speak from and to the heart. I really liked the variation of melodies and Jaymie's voice is rich & beautiful. The cd is also lots of fun and brought many a smile.

  • "A singer of extraordiary style who invariably touches your heart."
    author: Michael Podwill

I was "introduced" to Jaymie Meyer through a friend who knows great songs and great singing. She had heard Ms. Meyer's performance last year at the Algonquin (and, I believe, another one at Carnegie Hall) and she insisted that I get to know this CD quite well. She was right on the mark. In a word, I am enthralled. I'm not a music critic but I know what I like and I like good stuff. By all means, "What You'd Call A Dream" is absolutely dreamy. The selection of songs, including classics like Irving Berlin's "How Deep is the Ocean" and "I Got Lost in his Arms" as well as contemporary gems like "The Lies of Handsome Men," "My Favorite Year," Portia Nelson's poetic and heart rending "It's the Little Things" and others, is wonderfully comprehensive -- and a perfect showcase for Ms. Meyer's amazing vocal capabilities. Her enunciation is always impeccable, her pitch is perfect and her mood is invariably on the mark. I wasn't surprised to learn that Ms. Meyer is an actor as well as a singer. She seems to "perform" her songs in every sense of the word, and you can feel the character that comes through in each and every case. Just listen to the forever fabulous (and utterly captivating) "Miss Byrd" and you'll know precisely what I mean. I've heard this particular song many times, but I have never heard it sound better. These selections are alternately moving, funny, charming, evocative and, in all cases, immensely entertaining. Also, the arrangements and musical support are first rate and always appropriate. Ms. Meyer is a singer of extraordinary style who invariably touches your heart -- in all kinds of ways. I hope she follows up with a second CD. And by all means, may she do so soon.

  • "What you'd call a dream" is a dream come true
    author: Dan Wachspress

Having watched Jaymie Meyer grow from her roots on Restaurant Row and blossom at Carnegie Hall in a one woman show that brought the house down, finally having a CD that provides a collection of some of her most memorable songs is I call a dream. Hitting a home run right out of the box, the title song strikes a chord with anyone who has ever had a dream and My Mother Was A Singer will bring tears to the eyes of anyone who's ever had a mother. Jaymie's rendition of Ship In A Bottle is unique and marvelous. To those who love cabaret and those who want to find out what they are missing, grab this CD and then grab a seat at Jaymie Meyer's next performance!

This is one CD that I keep in my player all the time so that I can listen whenever the mood strikes me. The lyrics are meaningful and the music is always pleasing to the ear and never tiresome. Jaymie's voice is soothing in the more romantic songs and fun in the satirical ones. I wish she would produce another CD.
