About The CD
'Tom's Cafe' shows off James Curley's penchant for writing lyrically agile and sonically excellent "Cosmic Cowboy Country Blues Folk Music." The songs sidestep standard country/folk genre cliche and offer literate lyrics wrapped in familiar and engaging American musical packaging.
Purposely eschewing the hyper-sanitized sonic style of modern pop music, these songs feature spare arrangements of acoustic and electric guitars, piano and keyboards, percussion, harmonica, accordion, acoustic and electric bass, Dobro and pedal steel guitar. James' vocals are supported on most tracks with lush harmonies by Nancy Walker and Sue Demel, two of the most original and powerful singers in contemporary American Roots music. The CD's overall character is the work of Larry Clyman, an award winning guitarist, arranger and producer.

James Curley is a singer, songwriter, father, husband, sibling, entrepreneur, impresario, tall-tale teller, Celtic descendant, lapsed Catholic, neo-Buddhist, post modern persona housed in the great Prairie Metropolis on the shores of Lake Michigan. Fond of stews, James prefers an eclectic range of subjects for songs with the exception of broken hearts and unrequited love, which are already covered in vast quantity and diversity by virtually every other songwriter.

It's so cool to hear people making music like this. It's made me rethink my conception of contemporary American folk music. Does anybody else out there hear some old Steve Stills influence here?

author: Jim OrrHey, Tom's Cafe is some good stuff! The lyrics are well crafted, the vocals are strong, and the musical compositions rich and varied. The back-up band and vocals are tight, and I especially like those pedal steel and Dobro licks! I can foresee The Hunt and I Jumped Bail making a smooth landing on a movie soundtrack. After listening to a few of those love songs, you gotta conclude that this guy's got a lot of heart! Kudo's to CdBaby for bringing this CD to my doorstep.

Tom's Cafe is well crafted, with excellent uncluttered production, and a superb supporting cast. Best of all, these songs have lots of soul. There's something very comforting about this piece of work. My 4 1/2 year old daughter Abby keeps listening to "Western Avenue" over and over again before bed time.
