notes

A little look into history:

Joanie Leeds is a singer/songwriter born and raised in sunny Miami, Florida. Involved in music, theater, and piano lessons at a young age, she knew one day that New York City was to be her destination in order to pursue a career in performing. Within one month of her arrival to New York, Joanie was swooped to play the prestigious Bitter End in Greenwich Village.

Joanie's interest in music was enhanced in high school when she learned how to play guitar, which qualified her to audition and be selected as an east coast Song Leader of students from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee in the group SEFTY.

As a graduate of Syracuse University (BFA) Drama Department, Joanie took advantage of many types of classes and studied theatre, drama, music, music industry, and related business studies.

It wasn't until college that Miss Leeds enhanced her musical talents by writing her own music and lyrics. Joanie combines her love for folk, rock, jazz, blues, and soul.... The outcome? An original, unique sound and composition, bringing her many new fans and supporters.

Critics and professors alike have called her voice crystal clear, and flexible with a large range. Her beauty and verve come through in her melodies , which deal with love, politics, and life. She continues to develop her music, experimenting with new complexities and differing qualities with each arrangement and song, yet presenting her own original style through her words, thoughts, and dexterous piano and guitar arrangements.

After classes were through for the day, she worked the coffee house circuit performing in such venues as No Borders No Boundaries, Zopies, Schine Underground, and Happy Endings. She was involved in a women's benefit called "Rock for a Cause", and also self- directed and implemented a night of original works in a Songwriters Circle styled event she called "Striving for Serenity". Held at Syracuse Stages' Sutton Pavilion, it was a weekend Joanie arranged for singer/songwriters to perform their own music for the Syracuse area, with an overwhelming turnout.

With all of the Syracuse performances, it was only natural for Joanie to want to perform in her hometown Miami. And so she became a regular in Coconut Grove's The Hungry Sailor, which is where her fan base arose.

Joanie graduated college not just with her diploma in hand, but with her first completed CD, "MY JOB APPLICATION KNOWS MORE ABOUT ME THAN YOU DO", recorded at Earthquake Audio, with the help of Sammy Award Winner Mike Konkol.

Now in New York, Joanie's songs, new and old, can be heard regularly at her performances at The Bitter End, DTUT, and The Living Room.
She has also appeared in her hometown Miami,Fla at Tobacco Road and Luna Star Cafe
and in Philly PA at the Grape ST. Pub.

On her first night playing at The Bitter End, she was approached by Alec from the radio station 107Q in Columbus, Georgia, known for their Sunday night New Music Showcase. Listeners and fans tuned in to her 15 minute interview, where two of her songs off her CD, "Singing Sunrise" and "You Don't Know What Makes Me Smile" were played during the Sunday night appearance.
Joanie's music has also appeared on several episodes of MTV's television series "Undressed" 2001 episodes.

  • Joanie's Voice Soothes the Soul (and the ear)

This CD is wonderful... It feels like she's singing to you when you pop in the player. Her lyrics are so human.

  • I at first didn't have the nerve to write....

With reference to the lyrics of “You don’t know what makes me smile” (the last song of the album “My job application knows more about me than you do”), I at first didn’t have the nerve to write this review. How was I to know enough about Joanie to write what a fantastic songs she delivers, what a beautiful voice she owns, what a splendid lyrics she writes or what a wonderful person she is et cetera. Well, after listening to Joanie’s album at least 20 times, I’m convinced that I’m right. Joanie has a beautiful voice, delivers wonderful songs (too many to mention) and writes splendid lyrics (she really is an open book!). Of course, I don’t know for sure if she’s a nice person too, but I strongly think she is indeed!
