notes
Jon Brion is one of America's most talented Singer/Songwriters.
He is a multi-instrumentalist who has the hippest live show in the greater L A area. You can check him out at the Largo.
Although Jon Brion does not have much in the way of solo recordings available, he has been working hard since he was a young man. He was a member of The Grays, whose album Ro Sham Bo was a masterpiece of power pop (along with Jason Falkner, Buddy Judge, and Dan McCarroll, excellent performers and songwriters in their own right).
Jon was responsible for much of the sound of Aimee Mann's two solo albums, played guitars on Jellyfish's album Spilt Milk, and contributed much to the sound of Fiona Apple's debut album Tidal.
Jon has also worked with such artists as Murray Attaway, Jude Cole, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, David Byrne, Brian Stevens, Sam Phillips, E (and the Eels), Susanna Hoffs, The Mommyheads, and Garrison Starr, among others. He continues to be much in demand as a studio musician.
<h3>About the songs - in his own words:</h3>
Gotta Start Somewhere: When I first moved into the house to start work on the studio I bought a cassette 4-track to keep myself busy. This was the first thing I recorded. It wasn't intended for human consumption. At a later date, when asked by Atlantic to hear "more", I transferred it to the 24-track and continued the mayhem.
I Believe She's Lying: Fear of commitment anthem. Aimee Mann helped with some lyrics.
Meaningless: This is an old song of mine. It's one of many that deals with memory and how events imbue certain inanimate objects with the power to open your flood gates. The basic track was recorded by Mike Deneen at Q-Division and sat in a tape box until I needed something uptempo. Jack Joseph Puig recorded some extra guitar. Rich Costey was on hand to aide in completion. I think he mixed the drums in a room we had set up for Pro Tools that was behind the kitchen upstairs. There were cables running in and out of the house.
Ruin My Day: One of two songs on the album with lyrics written with Jeff McGregor. Jeff is a favorite songwriter of mine, and I'm lucky to have written a number of songs with him. He has a number of records out under the name of "The Solipsitics", and you are urged to look into them. I had the music and the basic lyrical idea (the title and a few key lines) and we completed the rest of it together. One strange fact was that before we had met, Jeff had written a song that had the same bridge music (the "love it was lovely" part) in his song "Up to Now". The first time he played me that song I laughed and said I had an unfinished song with the exact same musical bridge. I played it and we had a good chuckle and surprisingly to me he thought we should finish my song off as well. It was originally written on acoustic guitar but I grew accustomed to playing it on piano. The version here cracks me up because it reminds me of an old Atlantic record.
Walking Through Walls: This is one of the first songs Grant Lee Phillips and I wrote together. Grant's a remarkably talented individual who fronted Grant Lee Buffalo and is now starting a solo career. We are currently making a collaborative record where we both write and sing and play everything. We get together when schedules allow and it should be available this year.
Trouble: Jeff helped me finish off the lyrics on this one too. It was very helpful in that I had most of it in scattered notebooks and wasn't sure if I had confidence in them. He helped structure it and threw in some good lines. A hearty Thank You.
Hook, Line & Sinker: Fairly self-explanatory.
Dead To The World: The basic is all optigan, chamberlin and mellotron (the fetching tremolo guitar). The vocal was thrown on and it was one of the roughs sent into Atlantic. I just kept it "as is". The Outro is from an early un-used version of the Bridge of "Ruin My Day", Disney-style (with Bluebirds).
Her Ghost: A song I wrote when I lived in Boston. I've recorded some different versions over the years but was never happy. The original version had some orchestra samples over very straight drums and bass, and I always wanted to wait until I could make an album with orchestra to do this song, as that was the original intention. A conversation with my brother prompted its inclusion on this record. The orchestra will have to wait.
Same Mistakes: At about 3:30 in the morning on the last day of mixing I finished off lyrics to this song and we recorded it, put a coupe of overdubs on and mixed it. One of my favorite things on the record.
Voices: This is a Cheap Trick song. I'd been doing it at Largo with Music Boxes randomly playing and an Edison cylinder machine also running of its own free will. There's less of it on the record than there normally is in my live show because on the night of recording it's mainspring exploded.

Now I GOTTA See Jon!
author: Rich PLast time in L.A., I couldn't get into the (old) Largo to see Jon. After hearing this CD, that will not happen the next time I fly in. Absolutely perfectly crafted pop by a modern master.
Nice Music!
author: KHis music is very nice! I am hoping he makes own album more. And I want to listen to more tunes.
This is addictive.
author: John RuleAfter enjoying Aimee Mann's music production for many years it is a blast finding Jon Brion's contributions so evident in Meaningless. I hope to hear more from this LA hothouse of Beatles White Album influenced artists. My favorite song so far is Walking Through Walls. Its always great to hear session drummer great Jim Keltner contributing his amazing feel to pop tune with a little a little swing. No body does Ringo like Keltner. More pop music please Mr. Brion.
Just one word: lovely.
author: JessiI absolutely love this album. love. love. love. love. I especially enjoyed the song, "Hook, Line, and Sinker."
REALLY GOOD
author: AndreYep. REALLY GOOD. Thanks, played it too loud, I'm deaf now.
I need to listen to this soon!!
author: ScottCrap. I ordered this too soon. I'm saving it as a present and it's been sitting in my car tempting me to open it and listen. I don't think I'll be able to resist for another week. The clips sound fabulous. Thanks Jon. Thanks CD Baby
Meaningful. Get it?
author: Billy BoyThis CD is fantastic. I really love his voice and I love his style of not being too presumptuous. It was a really great CD. Absolutely worth picking up.
Awesome!
author: Chris C.Great album, I love it!
Amazing and inspring.
author: Chelsea HartMeaningless is anything but. Jon Brion's cd is not contrived, but amazing in it's originality. Meaningless is an album that I can listen to again and again; it never gets old and always delivers. Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates amazing lyrical and musical abilities with a unique Brion approach.
Fabulous
author: Andy MackayThis album did not dissapoint. Having trawled the Internet for anything Jellyfish and Grays related I knew it had pedigree but it did surprise me just how good this was. If you loved this go and try some Jason Falkner albums, Tim Smith with the Umajets, Roger Manning's Land of Pure Imagination (and Solid State Warrior, which has a few different but brilliant tracks to LOPI) and TV Eyes, an electronic collaboration between Roger Manning and Jason Falkner. Great stuff.
I ♥ J.B.!
author: spikeFive stars five stars! Jon Brion is probably THE most talented musician of our time. Yay for Meaningless! Tough question: Is it as good as the GOLD he's produced for others (i.e. Fiona Apple)? I can't decide. Who can?? BUY BUY BUY!!!!!
Fantastic.
author: KatherineJon Brion is wise beyond his years in his songwriting and arranging abilities. Every track on this album strikes a different chord - literal or figurative - for the listener. He has created a sound that is all his own and is cohesively displayed throughout Meaningless. You just get what he's singing about. I love it overall, and hope that Jon continues to create his own songs for a long time to come.
really good
author: JacobA really great CD! He's a great song writer. For example the coolest lyric I've heard in a while..."As long as he's the life in her he'll be the death of me." That's genius! I would have loved to hear him and Elliot Smith play together. I agree with Amy, hook line and sinker is definetly the best song on the album. Check out the Eternal Sunshine CD for more excellent music from Jon Brion.
Plaudits! I've become a huge Brion fan!
author: George MiserlisMelodic, Catchy, Brilliant. I highly recommend this CD. You won't stop listening.
Lovely Lyrics, Catchy Tunes
author: Amy HHook line and sinker is my favorite tune on this album! It's a perfect song; sweet, sad, and true. Jon Brion is so talented and Meaningless really reflects this. His voice totally gets me in every song on this CD.
Amazing!
author: Marjie WoolardAMAZING CD! One of my favorites!! And I don't say that about a lot of albums!!!
Great CD!
author: Mark RufinoThis CD is great. A lot of positive reviews and I don't know how much more I can add other than "I am glad I bought this." I love Jon Brion's production work with Fiona Apple and have been eying this CD for a while. I'm glad I finally got it and wish I had gotten it a while ago. Highly recommended disc.
Jon Brion is a talented lad
author: Francisco Carnerero ÁlvaroI've discovered JB only recently. I'm into movie soundtracks and I loved his score for "I Heart Huckabees". With "Meaningless", he proves that he's a talent I'll have to keep an eye on. I can add very little to the praise heaped on this CD by most of the other reviewers. This is pop as it should be. "I believe she's lying" and "Ruin my day" are my favourites, but all the songs are strong.
GREAT CD
author: MaryThis CD is a solid masterpiece. My favorite song being #2 (I Believe She's Lying), it is true original Jon Brion work. The robot voice is addictive. It's happy music.
Melodic!!
author: Tom C....a cd with enough things: melody, energy and relaxing songs!
Brion is brilliant. Enough said?
author: Jay "F-ing" FooteI recieved this cd 3 days ago and have listened to it 8 times. It is brilliant. The orchestration is stunning, the songs are tuneful, lyrics are witty and the production is flawless. Everyone should own this, IMHO.
Jon is genius !
author: i was a boyhis songs bring me special moment in my life.Without saying any words, just listen. Thank you CDBaby! this album is great! Thank you!
Jon is two letters from God
author: The ScarThe man is a wonder. Thank you to goodweatherforairstrikes for turning me onto this solo CD. If you're hear, you know of the guy's work with others. Well this is just as good. Best money I've dropped on a CD in quite a while... apart from the Girls Aloud Greatest Hits CD.

I should insure this CD.
author: OwenThis CD has been stolen from me more times than I care to admit. Maybe it's because I feel like I have to play it for every person I talk to who DOESN'T know who Jon Brion is. GENIUS.
Can you fall in love with a CD?
author: KathI haven't been able to stop playing this CD since it arrived. If it's not on my player, it's in my head - and I love it! Heart-stoppingly beautiful.
Whoa!
author: UnFanIt's an amazing album. Thanks CDBaby! *thumbs up!*
Honesty is a beautiful thang
author: bethThis is a one of a kind work of art--haunting, complex, real (in other words a bit depressive) and most of all-HONEST. An invaluable and most cherished addition to my music collection. Thanks, Jon Brion.
The perfect album to play at your local LA meeting (Lovers Anonymous)
author: Rich AucoinHello, my name is Jon Brion and I’m a lover… is perhaps how this collection of love songs could start. But tagging love to Meaningless is like tagging music to sound; the former is not always in the latter. Nevertheless, Brion starts this emotional disc with a plethora of synths, sleigh bells, pianos, drums, and whistles. While having such a layered sound, Brion shows that he has not forgotten what he is padding and in comes a flourishing melody peaking, ironically, on the word “aware”. I Believe She’s Lying, the record’s second track, has Brion dealing with the tension of trust on top of a fast driving drum n bass beat. Meaningless’ title track shows off Brion’s intellectual side more than his wordplay of tracks like Hook, Line and Sinker where he intertwines the hook of the same name with another expression (of same salable count!), Lock, Stock and Barrel or Ruin My Day’s line, “I’m feeling for all the world like I’m feeling for all the world”. Brion’s sound, from his chord progressions and arrangements, is similar, particularly in this song, to classic pop of either The Beatles or The Beach Boys (or Brian Wilson) while the tracks like Dead to the World and Trouble shows a glimmer of an early air organ sound that Brion would later use as the sound of the film Punch Drunk Love; Dead to the World ends with a very classic type of soundtrack that one does not hear Brion attempting all that often. Her Ghost and Voices (Cheap Trick song) are possibly the strongest tracks on the record. Voices ends with the winding down of a music box and so does the disc as if the record had been one big release of the lover’s love.
one of our generations greatest...
author: Scott SharrardImagine a world without Thomas Edison, Haussman, Henry Miller, Sartre, De Gaulle, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis (and I'll throw in Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler for effect) and so on, the great innovators and entrepeneurs who were exalted and mostly embraced in their own time, intellects, rule breakers, risk takers, and finally tastemakers...we're now living in that world that does not embrace these creative forces or give the time of day for challenging thought and artistic or political discourse (at least the larger "we"), lets thank god that at least we have Jon Brion and Meaningless...proof alone that there is no longer ONE single major record label with a soul since we can only get it from cdbaby (no one wants to step up and sign this...sad). Not to mention that this is a record by a provenly prolific and successful producer no less...the others are out there, please also check out Paul Weller, Jamie Lidell, Lewis Taylor, Feist, PJ Harvey, Doyle Bramhall II, Fat Freddy's Drop, Steve Coleman, Shelby Lynne, Los Lobos(and of course Chris Whitley RIP)...in our sad and lost country they toil in obscurity, let's hope one day we get our idols back and they recieve their rightful place in music history, alongside Mr. Brion and his beautiful record... SS
Fantastic
author: ErinQuite wonderful! It's quirky, it's fun, it's sad... I dunno, but it makes me happy! :)
TOP OF THE POPS!
author: Robb BensonThis is one of my favorite records of all time. Jon is a super hero in my world! I feel lucky to have seen him several times in Seattle. He doesn't come here often, however when he does it is always out of sight!! This record is in my top ten for sure! Jon writes terrific heart felt gems one after the other. Buy this record now!!!
Great Music
author: Matt Shulmanjust want to say that if you are thinking about getting this CD, you should. it's worth it. Jon Brion is a true artist with a unique sound. it's simply great music.
Great melodic pop from a very busy man
author: GregHaving loved his contributions to The Grays and Aimee Mann, I was happy Jon Brion released a whole CD of his stuff. Standouts include Gotta Start Somewhere, I Believe She's Lying, and Her Ghost. Walking Through Walls, while catchy and bouncy and Emitt Rhodesy, goes on far longer than a ditty warrants. That said, I love this album. This CD makes me wish I could see his live show at Largo. Perhaps a DVD or set of live CDs? I'll look for them here on CD Baby!
Stellar. A really cohesive collection of tracks--I LOVE it!
author: Nicole"Meaningless" is an amazing album. It has been in constant rotation since my package arrived last week. The music is great and the lyrics are really sharp, to boot, so you can't beat that. I'm particularly enamored of "Her Ghost" and "I Believe She's Lying" right now but, in honesty, there's not a single track I don't love. Great album, Jon. : )
Great Cd. I love it!
author: MusilosophyJon Brion has talent!I love his music and I like in particular the song titled I Believe She's Lying. One of the greatest singer songwriter I have heard.
CD baby did a fabulous job and so did Jon Brion...
author: UrsamajaIt's a perfect pop album - literate and cleverly arranged with strong, memorable hooks. If that sounds appealing to you in the least, y'can buy this cd with complete confidence.
You gotta start somewhere.
author: I.S.M.You gotta start someday to listen to good music, so why don´t you start right now and right here. You won´t be disappointed, that´s a promise that Jon Brion makes on my behalf! Make a nother solo album, people are drooling. I know that your pressing soundtracks and whatnot but come on.
Great.
author: Lucas SewellGreat CD, excellent songwriting. Perhaps a bit more poppy than I usually listen to but the eccentric mixing more than compensates. Got this after enjoying "Here we go" off the Punch Drunk Love sound track and wasn't disappointed. Who makes the decisions at those record companies? This is easily better than at least 99% of the tripe on labels.
Everything and More
author: Robster LobsterCDs good, but anyone who is reading this knows that. I mean come on, it's Jon Brion. What I'd like to comment on is the service of CDBaby. Never in my life have I enjoyed purchasing a CD over the internet as much as I have with CDBaby. You guys ufcking rock. Keep on a - well you know.
CD Baby is fantastic, as is the Jon Brion album
author: JasonI had an excellent experience with CD Baby. The Meaningless CD came on time and in good condition. It's a fantastic album, which I reccomend to anybody who likes Brion's style of pop music. I futher suggest that it be purchased from CD Baby.
Great Album, I'm Lucky not to have missed it.
author: DjangoGreat album, albums like this only come along now and again and it seem's to creep up on me when i think all the best song's have been done, then an album like this pop's up and gives me hope that theres plenty more great song's out there. The last time i felt that was Stephen Fretwell.
Jon Brion is an undoubtable genius
author: Anthony StokesLet me just say, that basically the reason I bought this CD was because I am trying to find great piano songs to play and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my all-time favorite movie. I had big expectations for this cd, but no where near as big as I should have. Not only does this cd has some great piano driven songs, but it is layered with so much hook driven, just amazing music, I have not been able to put this cd down. A must have for your music collection.
Believe what you hear--Jon Brion is fantastic.
author: RachelI bought this CD without even listening to it, because I couldn't get the sound clips to work on my computer. But I loved Jon Brion's score for Eternal Sunshine and I've been a fan of Fiona Apple and Amy Mann for awhile now, and just kind of took it on faith, along with stellar reviews on this site. The second I heard the chorus to the first song, I knew I had made a good decision. This is one album that should definitely be heard by more people. Every single song is fantastic, especially "I Believe She's Lying" and "Her Ghost." Highly recommended, and I'm eagerly awaiting any follow-up he comes out with.
Just what i expected from Brion
author: JVancoGreat recording,great songs..
Yep, what they wrote and then some.
author: Bradford K.I can't find any fitting words that haven't already been stated in describing this wonderful album. Get it!
Amazing
author: Robert RaymondBest cd I've heard in awhile. Too Good for words. I found this looking up the Excerpts, he was their lead guitar player, and I struck gold with this cd.
WOWIE WOW WOW WOW
author: Kristin H.Jon Brion is amazing... all the songs vary in such beautiful ways.... The harmonies in "I Beleive She's Lying" are so tight, its squeezalicious. Definitely a CD for people who like variety in their musicians. Bravo dear Jon, Bravo.
great record that deserves to be heard by more people
author: Andrew Landrythis is an amazing CD. i heard a track (I Believe she's lying) from an mp3 blog and decided to go out and buy the CD as quickly as I could. I live in New York City and figured it shouldn't be too hard to find. But I went to Tower Records (which is huge) and there wasn't even a plastic divider for Jon Brion, much less a C.D. They actually carry my band's C.D., so it totally blew my mind that they wouldn't have his. I tried another record store and nothing. So I figured I'd just buy it from the iTunes Music Store... it's not there. Then I bought it from CD Baby and it arrived in a few days. I've been listening to it non-stop since last week. It reminds me in a lot of ways of "I'm With Stupid" by: Aimee Mann, which is an album I also love. It's one of those albums that just blows your mind with how cool everything sounds and i love Jon Brion's aesthetic. this is definitely a CD worth owning and it's fun to show to people and watch them freak out that they haven't heard it before.
One of the most enjoyable albums I've heard...
author: Stevie KAmazing songwriting. Listening to the album takes me to another place. First became interested in Jon Brion from Fiona Apple's albums and his work with Kanye West. The music is just beautiful and alive. Thank you, Jon Brion. I hope to see you at the Largo in LA sometime next year. Hopefully, you'll continue to perform there every Friday.
We may be through with the past, but . . .
author: Mark BrownI first became interested in John Brion’s songs after hearing Strings That Tie to You on the Eternal Sunshine CD. Both film and song (only fragments of which are actually heard in the film) happened to coincide with comparable experiences of my own, and my interest developed from there. Like Strings That Tie to You, tracks 3, 4, and 9 of Meaningless all deal in one way or another with the sometimes random and usually painful associations of memory. Tracks 2, 6, 7, 8, and especially 10 are different treatments of a closely related theme: the inability to retrieve past errors, the fear of repeating them, and the rueful recognition that they probably will be or already have been repeated. The final track effectively combines these two themes. Track 5, which initially seems out of key with the others, nonetheless functions within the total context of the album; its cocky self-assurance is belied by the disillusioned melancholy of the record as a whole and by the self-reproaches of 6, 8, and 10 in particular. Though Strings That Tie to You remains my sentimental favorite Jon Brion song, new favorites include I Believe She’s Lying, Ruin My Day, Hook, Line, and Sinker, and The Same Mistakes. Thank you, Jon Brion, for the company of your songs, and thank you, CD Baby, for making them available and for requesting a review.
I had to check this out cause of Kanye...
author: CHASE SwAyZeVery power-popped out, complex, yet friendly while being occassionally intimate all at once... Much respect.
excellente
author: BrendanI am really enjoying this CD and it has me gotten further into exploring Jon Brion's career. It's really cool stuff and I'd recommend it for most avid music fans. Thanks CD Baby!
life, abundantly...
author: mattyyes. so. i bought this cd. i cried. how can music be so good? change your life. make yourself happy. live adundantly. listen to meaningless.
flawless
author: Ckhristhis album is fantastic. better than you could possibly imagine
As good as I expected
author: Jeff BricknellIts about the songs for me, the music matches the lyrics perfectly with a 'grown up' approach to songwriting. Great album
Jon Brion is my favorite composer right now...
author: John NguyenI love I HEART HUCKABEES and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. Those scores have brought an infinite amount of character and heart to both films. I'm a filmmaker myself and find that Jon Brion's film work (as well as this CD I just bought) has a level of cretivity to it that is unlike anyone else in my CD collection right now. Great work. When's the next CD coming?!?!
Incredible!
author: Kiel EmersonThis was an incredible cd! I love Brion's wonderful work, and this album was beautiful. Jon is a gifted writer and musician, and I highly recommend this album!
Brilliant and immediate!
author: Dr. Stephen Patt/Vintage Guitar MagazineAn absolutely brilliant gem of an opus, full of pop wisdom, tremendous insight--Jon Brion squeezes more empathy for the human condition into a 3 minute tune (Meaningless) than most philosopher's can in a trilogy. The ridiculously good guitars, fabulous keyboards strained through an alien filter, and gorgeous vocals are pure ear candy...It keeps getting better with each re-visit. A Must Have Album!
very much worthwhile !!
author: George M.I have always loved Jon's work with Aimee Mann. She is tremendous, but he has been an essential part of fleshing out many of her songs. Now to hear his genius in his own work is just great! Highly recommended !
Top notch pop
author: PaulGreat stuff. First found Jon through the Magnolia score, and have snapped up Punch Drunk Love, Huckabees and Eternal Sunshine too. Meaningless deserves a wider audience, full of warm and affecting pop tunes. Now how about putting out the Hard Eight soundtrack?!
Meaningless is quite Meaningful
author: Eric HowsonWhat can I say...it's Jon Brion! Everything this man does is nothing short of amazing...he is a true talent. Thank you Jon for sharing your gift with the rest of us...
Outstanding achievement
author: MannyHaving first heard Jon Brion on the Punch Drunk Love soundtrack, I could immediately tell that Brion was a talented musician. The soundtrack was immediately memorable and cemented Brion's name in my brain. Brion's "Meaningless" is an amazing piece of work that really displays the limitless vision and talent that Brion possesses. The songs are all top notch and cover an array of styles in 45 minutes. From the acoustic opener "Gotta Start Somewhere" to the melodic perfection that is "Hook, Line and Sinker," there are no misfires. I knew of Brion's talent as a multi instrumentalist but he is just as strong vocally. If I had to sum up "Meaningless" in 3 words I would have to say that it's a power pop gem and a must have for any fan of Brion or the genre. I would also recommend The Grays "Ro Sham Bo," an album from the mid 90's, which features Brion, Jason Faulkner Buddy Judge and Dan McCaroll. I anxiously await any future releases by Brion and his continuing work as a film composer.
I'm your fan from Poland... Jon please... record more albums... YOU ARE GREAT. T

A Thing of Pure Beauty
author: Brian VeitzBrilliance contained on a round plastic bit you can place in a cd player. It just doesn't get any better.
I love it
author: JakobFinding out about Jon from the "Eternal Sunshine..." soundtrack, I found this CD by chance and ordered it within 5 mins. I am now considering getting a copy for my brother, a real Beatles fan, on his birthday. I love this CD! Thanks Jon for sharing your songs!

author: J.RobbinsA most inspiring breath of fresh air, smart but never too clever for its own good. Songwriting and production that perfectly compliment each other. A keeper.
absolutly beautiful

author: JM VillegasBeyond words. Just Magical.
Brilliant
author: j.a.This CD is brilliant. If you like Brion's other stuff (I Heart Huckabees, Eternal Sunshine..., etc), then you will love this CD. I've owned the CD for a week, and I think I've listened to it about 500 times... and I'm about to start #501!
brilliant
author: travisJon Brion has created the perfect pop album. The production is top notch. Brion just has the perect knack for creating lines that stay with you long after youve walked away from the CD player.
The Only Thing "Meaningless" Is The Label Who Failed Us.
author: AnonymousThis record is one of the cornerstones of popular recorded music - our generation's Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper's. The fact that Atlantic Records - once a pioneer that we trusted to find these gems to orchestrate our lives - chose to pass on this record, seals the deal: the commercial recording industry is dead, out of touch. Would today's label know to sign Ray Charles? . . . And as the labels flounder - I salute CD Baby. What if this outlet didn't exist? Would Meaningless sit on a shelf, or be limited to the relative few of us who could pick up our copy at Largo? (That is, if we're willing to wait weeks behind industry executives for a good seat at his show. . . . Music lovers, don't be depressed by the fate of the best album you've heard since you were a teenager. Be excited that, thanks to technology, brilliant music has a way of transcending a label's decision to "pass" when it's f'ing brilliant. Jon Brion, thanks for sharing your genius - independently.
Superb intelligent pop. Go buy!
author: Nick MartinI've been a fan of Jon Brion's work with The Grays, Jellyfish and Aimee Mann but only recently became aware he had his own cd out(excluding the movie soundtracks). What a good record! This is intelligent, well arranged and produced pop, with a bowlful of great songs. Highlights are the title track Meaningless, Ruin My Day and Hook,Line and Sinker. Buy it now.
Songwriting at its best... delicate, graceful and stylish!
author: Matt WarrenIf you like Aimee Mann, Elliot Smith and Jellyfish... and can imagine a bastardised version of these artists into one single being.... then Jon Brion is the result! This CD is both delicate and graceful.... the lyrics are eloquent and stylish with fantastic use of language that means cliche's have no place here. From the opener to the final track, I was treated to a pop/ rock/ indie lesson, in chordal and melodic composition- and the harmonies? FANTASTIC! Again, no cliches... nothing contrived here... I didnt realise when I bought this CD it was 5 years old- had I, I may have been slightly worried it may sound dated... but it is not- in 10 years this CD will be as good as it is now... in fact (and now it is time to use my own cliche...!) like a fine wine, this does just get better and better with age... 'Meaningless' is highly recomended by me and if you like your music melodic, interesting and thoughtful then Jon Brion is da bomb for you too! *****
great album with even better potential
author: CesspoolEvery single track is solid. All of them have great melodies, and are sprinkled with enough interesting detail to hold my attention for countless listens. Now Brion just has to put out a second solo album fusing the pop sensibility of Meaningless with the evil carnival insanity of Extraordinary Machine. That would absolutely kill. Do it, Jon. Please.
Help!! I cant stop listening to it! It's just too good!
author: Peggy CoxHelp!! I cant stop listening to it. It's just too good!
Pure creativity oozing out of Maestro Brion!
author: Dale TurnerI FINALLY caught Jon Brion at Largo--twice in the past couple months. I'm definitely going back, a ton :-) Pure creativity oozing out of this MONSTER. He sure deserves our thanks for sharing himself so much!! So, the last Largo set I caught prompted me to cruise to CD Baby and buy Meaningless. (LOVE it!) Funny thing, upon playing it, I could only listen to the first four songs before repeating 'em over and over a ZILLION times!!! Had to relive 'em, pronto!! (I've finally graduated to the rest of the disc and love it ALL.) Consider this disc mandatory listening for fans of hook-heavy, spine-tingling, unpredictable-yet perfect pop. Truly beautiful stuff!!!!!
top of the line
author: KGLOI can't say enough about how great this album is! Jon Brion is a true ARTIST. Not many of them anymore. Can't wait till his next one. Heard it is coming out soon. PLease Jon Hurry! :)
Perfect pop for now people
author: Davie H.If you dig Jellyfish, XTC, Brian Wilson, those four English chaps, Elvis Costello in sunny mode, or any number of primo pop stylists, this is simply essential. Smart lyrics, hook-filled tunes, inventive arrangements...it's all there. More please, Senor Brion.
Indie Pop in top form
author: John DiSalvoAn entire album full of memorable, hook-filled, gorgeous pop songs... what more could I ask for? Perhaps some better spacing of the ballads, but though I initially found myself stuck on the first three tracks, a day at work with just this album helped me come to love all the songs equally. Fantastic, and completely worth every penny!
A TOUR DE FORCE POP RECORD
author: leftfieldI think this cd is an excellent piece of pop writing in its purest since to the point and astute ear candy that increases its depth upon every listen
Simply my favorite
author: EricI've had this album for a little over a year now, and I haven't stopped listening to it. Really. Jon Brion is my favorite musician on this planet, and I say that knowing very well what that implies. Better than The Beatles? Better than the Beach Boys, Stones, Queen, Zep, Floyd, Elliott Smith, Dan Crow? ...eh I don't know. I just know that I've never related to music as well as I do to his. I'll reveal this: not only do I shed actual, tangible tears listening to this and his mindblowing soundtracks, but I do at his shows at Largo as well. I'm sure he sees me gawking like a teenage girl and gets fully creeped out, but the musicianship and soul in everything he touches is so evident that it both awes me and frustrates me at the same time. Listen to Ruin My Day, Voices, Her Ghost, Same Mistakes... the entire album, really... and let it taunt you, not by any sort of pretense, but just in how superior he is to anyone else out there (and then try to score a spot at Largo some Friday to seal the deal).
amazing cd
author: Phil VossHaven't bought a cd in over two years. This was well worth it. Can't wait to see him at the Largo. The only track I don't like is walking through walls.
Good albulm from amazing producer!!
author: Profesor GirafalesGood albulm, fell in love with every song on here. I gotta say that Jon Brion is one hell of a songwriter. What do you expect from a guy who's worked with so many songwriters. 'Meaningless' will grow on you the more you listen to it, and with time, you will learn to apreciate it. Every time I read someone else's review, I always love it when people recommend other CDs that they recommend if I like the on just reviewed. So here's the on I recommend if you liked meaningless...Band: Nada Surf Albulm name: 'Let Go'. Enjoy!
BEAUTIFUL, MASTERFUL MELODY MAKER
author: FayeThis is an absolutely beautiful record. From start to finish, the songs, the lyrics, the musicality, everything is there and spit-shined polished! Jon Brion deserves all the accolades he gets, he is simply and truly a master of melody and complete SONGWRITING. WoW...Meaningless is just an amazing record, an enjoyable orgasm of perfectly aligned sound! Thank you for sharing your gift.
Absolutely amazing album!
author: Ryan West of Walker LundeeI cannot say enough good things about the pure talent on this album! It is further proof of the terrible state the record industry is in considering how Atlantic records kept repeatedly putting this album on the shelf, neglecting to release it. Funny, considering this is as good as it gets. -Ryan West(www.walkerlundee.com)
Great Album
author: Peter BauerI saw Jon Brion at largo and just had to have his album. It's really awesome!
Great great album.
author: Thomas CotterWhat a great record, this is one I think I'll be able to listen to over and over again throughout the years. Each song is individually good and works great as whole flowing into the other. I bet you'll get one or more song stuck in your head. Lyrically, it's very interesting to see these meaningful lines juxtaposed against the poppy music, but it works and adds another dimension to it.
Masterful pop music
author: Josh HortonJon Brion is one of the masters of pop music today, and Meaningless showcases his talent. He combines above-average songwriting with strong pop sensibilities. His collaborators on Meaningless include the always-wonderful Aimee Mann and Grant-Lee Phillips. This album isn't perfect, but it's an enjoyable listen from one of the best out there.
A must have for anyone
author: Moses RobertsNo doubt this is a keeper. I am a young listener (17 years of age) and recently grew intrest in singer, songwriter Jon Brion. This album, Meaningless is by far one of the greatest albums of my entire lifetime. Some songs resembling early Beatles tracks, ths aura Meaningless gives off to the listener is one of accomplishment and remeberance. It is a joy to listen to every time, regardless of mood or situation. Jon Brion has a great talent and it shows in his songs. I loved Meaningless and I know everyone else who gives it a chance will find its feel very moving and motivating. Jon Brion is an inspiration to me and to all songwriters of America.
It's the way pop was meant to be.
author: Mike HopeHooks galore! As my first Jon Brion CD, I didn't quite know what to expect, having only heard him from his beautiful work on Eternal Sunshine to the Spotless Mind, but that was enough to convince me to get the album. And it's a joy to listen to. It definately has a Beatlesque flavor to it (think Revolver), but these songs stand strong on their own. To put it simply, if you don't mind bobbing your head, and marveling at sometimes comical, yet always heartfelt lyrics, you won't be dissapointed. http://indiefox.sitesled.com
Awesome CD
author: ChrisThis is an Awesome CD. Jon Brion is even better live though. My only beef is on the first song, the bass levels felt a little too high, but other than that the arrangments were perfect and had a very "Jon Brion" feel.
maybe not popular, but certainly great pop
author: SilverbearThis albums is full of quirky, catchy tunes from beginning to end. It's fun listening but also moving in places. If you like the Beatles, XTC, etc., you're likely to enjoy this album.
Ferociously exceeding high expectations
author: Bryan SmithAfter more than 2 full album plays (currently logging at approximately 1500), Meaningless has hit No. 1 on my playlist. I tried to listen objectively for as long as possible. Yeah, that lasted a week.
brilliant work.
author: steve deasyi am a singer/songwriter in my own right, and i gotta tell you, this work by jon brion is brilliant. this independent release is strong from start to finish, lyrics, melody, vocals, arrangements, guitar and keyboard work, studio stunts, everything! Outstanding!
Perfect pop doesn't get much better.
author: Zak MonnetBought this cd because I loved Jon's score for "I Heart Huckabees." I was immediately impressed even more. His knack for melodies is fabulous. This album has got some real jems on it.
Brion Is Amazing
Jon Brion's solo outing is astounding. Meaningless is merely a hint of his talents as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. The way in which Brion balances pop melody and counterintuitive songwriting is exceedingly great. I can only hope he makes a follow up someday, rather than merely doing soundtracks (which are amazing as well). If you haven't already, buy the soundtracks to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I Heart Huckabees.
Not at all meaningless
author: Terje Mørk (terje.mork@gmail.com)I'll make it short. I'll make it concise. Jon Brion is an amazing musician. Both when it comes to scoring movies, and this CD. I bought Meaningless a couple of weeks ago, and it is simply amazing. I have been playing it almost non-stop. Jon, give us more. We need more. I need more.
Jon Brion is great
author: LeahThis CD is pretty good. I really enjoy, "Ruin My Day", "Her Ghost", and "Hook, Line and Sinker". He is a great musician. I do have to say that I prefer the work he has done on soundtracks to this CD but if you are a Jon Brion fan, it is worth listening to.
A Piece of Brillance
author: Bry DeVaughnI heard of Jon Brion a few months ago while watching a short film of I Heart Huckabees on IFC. Up until then I had never heard of him. I was unaware that he was responsible for alot of the music in P.T. Anderson flicks. After I found this out I began looking into some of his other works. To my surprise, he had collabrated with alot of other artists' works such as Elliott Smith (a personal favorite of mine), Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, and so on. I purchased "Meaningless" about 2 weeks ago. Immediately I feel in love with it. I have to say it is one of the best albums I've ever bought. The track "Walking Through Walls" is awesome. The line "some people complain, well they can caterwaul, I could do the same, but I'm walking through the walls" is great. How truthful can you get? He puts so much feeling into his work and it shows. Jon Brion is a great and tremendous artist who I hope will continue to write and create beautiful music for years to come. "Meaningless" is a wonderful display of creativity. It's a shame that I haven't known about his talent until recently, but thank God I do now. Keep up the awesome work Jon Brion. Hope to see you live at the Largo someday.
AMAZING!!
author: Mike AtkinsThis record, though mostly a collection of demos, is one of the most incredible pieces I've heard in years. It's a shame that the corporate record machine hasn't taken notice of this, as this is what would make radio a credible giant again. Thank you Jon for a great work of art.
Pretty coo' stuff
author: Cameron AllenI got Jon Brion's "Meaningless" because I liked his quirky but emotive film scores. I guess I gotta admit that at first I wasn't hugely into this cd. But that was actually MY fault because I was having a rough few days and the nature of Jon's music just didn't mesh with my mood. But this really is a great album. It's timeless pop, but certainly not disposable. The songs are interesting, catchy, and fun! Hale yeah. It's just a fun album, it's pretty rich too. I mean there's a lot of stuff going on in the songs. Welp, I'm not sure what else to say. This is a good album, worthy of your hard earned cash. Get it, you'll be the hippest dude on your block!
Meaningfull Meaningless.
author: Jelle van Buuren"I believe she's lying" stroke me right at the first notes. A rich, meaningfull recording, ever so well sung, keen lyrics. Here's someone preparing to stay a lifetime among the finest musicians on earth.
Super pop record
author: Tony San MarcoI really dig this record. Great pop songs with interesting sounds and production and some fine lyrics.
Heartfelt, playful, sly
author: rliroff'Meaningless' is, above all, heartfelt and playful, qualities that are found in all of his available recordings. Brion's love for the craft of music, particularly in terms of strong melodies and evocative lyrics, sung in an often plaintive manner, makes his work delightful to listen to. Also, he chooses excellent instrumentation for his work, which is tonally quite strong. Finally- I've gotta make a plug for 'Eternal Sunshine' and 'I Love Huckabees'- they're even better albums, which says a lot!
Great, but his genius now minimizes its respect.
author: fenix692I believe this cd to be pretty damn good, the only thing that hurts it is hearing his soundtrack stuff now. This cd is a couple of years old, and as time does and has done effectively for Jon...he has matured as an artist. He has moved from just pop music, to the ability to create completely visual sounds and moods. The music he makes now completes emotions so well, and has good movies to back them up that it is the only thing that minimizes the beauty of this cd.
Original
author: Greg CarrierThis is catchy power pop with a really original twist. As you might expect, the production is very good, although it's less polished and quirkier than most of the stuff he's famous for (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple). I'm giving this 3 stars, but I don't know that it wouldn't grow on me even more if I find the time to listen through a few more times.
required listening for any pop fan
author: michael clearyhaving been a fan of jon brion's production work, i finally got a chance to hear the full extent of his talents in action. shades of beatles, xtc and brian wilson all swimming in a pop rock stew that keeps me coming back for more. now if we could only get him to come out to the east coast for a gig or two.........
Wonderful!!!!
author: SweetCheeksHey babycakes. This is the sweetest album you'll ever slide in that oversized, CD player of yours--the one covered with the little sparkly green stickers. Classic Brion is all you ever need to get by in this crazy world. You want a beautiful melody to ease your troubled soul? Click that little skip button 'til it lands on number 9. Her Ghost is nothing but the best for you honeybuns.
Phenomenal!! great CD, great artist!
author: sebastian eilertWhat a fantastic mix of music and lyrics. Jon Brion is a very fine songwriter. I really enjoy listening to this CD over and over again and continue to find more details in his music. anyone that grew up with the beatles or has a true appreciation for them will see that Brion took their music style to the next level while adding hiw very own touch. excellent and highly recommended !!
meh...
author: mix master markfirst off I love jon brion more than most things in life but this cd does not do his genius justice. all his soundtrack work is so much better. The cd definately has its moments but for me at least, it was an overall disapointment. Get his soundtrack work instead.
Perfection
author: Alex BechtelThere are so many good things I can say about this album, that I refuse to tire out my fingers. All I can say is that you're a fool if you do not own this album. It's pop perfection. Jon Brion is one of our generation's greatest songwriters, as he has proved with his incredible film score work, especially on Punch Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine and his most recent I Heart Huckabees, which I would also check out if you like this album. I patiently await another Jon Brion solo album, Meaningless was so good.
Awesome talent, wonderful sensabilities, a true find
author: Jerry MThere are NO weak tracks on this CD. I've had the priviledge to hear Jon perform all of these songs live at one time or another at Largo. My favorites are I Believe She's Lying, Meaningless, and Hook, Line and Sinker. I dig all the arrangements on this CD, and as I stated at the top of this, there is nothing weak on this..it's a strong offering from a great talent.
Remarkable - and it seems to blossom as it goes along...
author: BluntReview.comI was assigned this chap's soundtracks - and thank the heavens I decided to research his "other stuff." Though this is an older cd, it's none-the-less spectacular and sadly over looked for too long. Brion's simply a treasure sunken beneath a sea of mediocre offerings released to the masses. It's a shame more folks have not discovered this singular talent. Do yourself a favor and get in the know - now.
Why is Jon Brion not a household name?
author: Daniel O'MearaIt is almost absurd how many great performers Jon Brion is involved with. It seems as though about 10% of my enormous record collection has his name attached in some fashion. For years, I heard about his spectacular solo material, and being obsessed with Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, and countless other Jon-related bands, I longed to hear it. I finally found the album here and I must say that I have not been disappointed in the slightest bit. He is, as usual, in top form. There is not a weak song on this album. The melodic quality here is absolutely stunning. These are songs you swear you've heard before because they just feel natural, like this is how music was meant to sound. So do yourself a favor. Buy this CD. Then buy the soundtracks to I Heart Huckabees, Punch Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and (the score to) Magnolia. Then find out who's albums he has produced/written music for/played instruments on and pick up just about every one you don't have. This is a true musical genius at work.
Wealth of catchy melodies.
author: mike mPushing great melodies like these beyond pop should provide years of great listening. What a start!
Brion is completely underrated and brilliant. Poetry & Pop Perfectly combined
author: Steve M IrwinSoundtracks & scores are nice... but on Meaningless you get to see what Jon Brion is really all about. The incredible talent on this album… shit… there aren’t words. I rarely hear lyrics and music that is so cheerfully clever, and painfully true at the same time. He is an unsung hero of the music world, and Meaningless is one of his greatest good deeds.
happenin like sex and candy
author: ging and jessthis cd is amazing. jon brion is hot hot HOT.
WELL EXECUTED WITH DELICIOUSLY HUMAN LYRICS; I HEART JON BRION
author: Amanda C.What a wonderful album. I knew I would love it, from hearing his other projects. I am just sorry it took me so long to order it. This is one of those albums that I can really connect to, not only are the lyrics clever but they hold so much truth, and the music stands behind it. An album with emotional integrity has finally arrived.!!!
Loved almost everything...
author: AlI bought the Punch-Drunk Love soundtrack and looked immediatly for more. I saw Jon Brion put out an non-soundtrack album and bought it here. On this cd there are no instrumentals like on his soundtracks and that is what I was looking for. I absolutely love his voice so this cd is the place to be for me. The sound of his voice on Ruin My Day is so good it gives me the chills. Loved every song exept I Believe She's Lying and Dead To The World. Her Ghost, Voices and Ruin My Day are my favourites and are absolutely stunning. I thought I heard somewhere Jon didn't think there was interest for an album from him. He couldn't be more wrong. Give us more. Jon Brion come perform in the Netherlands! Now!
Effortless in the best possible way
author: Harry PuckeringJon Brion has ears. This is one of the best sounding records I've found in years. And the songs are good too.
Great...
author: L-LoveGreat pop album from a talented song writer. This is a well put together album from the lyrics to the arrangements. Jon Brion has also been able to put his talent to work for some of the brightest artists in music today. Keep going strong. Maybe I can reach your plateau with my album someday. http://www.cdbaby.com/llove
Meaningful
author: Steven LeBeauThis is a fantastic CD from a very talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist producer. The songs are pure pop, some verging on power pop, but mostly this is Beatlesque pop of the Abbey Road variety--very mellow, yet infinitely listenable. I only hope he releases more material soon!
Really good CD. Been listening to it a lot.
author: Steve VanHornGreat example of what a pop album can be. It is catchy, smart, and doesn't get old after a couple of listens. I highly recommend it.
A Beatlesque and beautiful compilation of words and melodies
author: Bill McConnell"Meaningless" is meaningful in every way from its pop-oriented melodies that break standard pop molds to the haunting lyrics of songs like "Ruin My Day" and "Dead to the World." If you enjoy Aimee Mann, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Elliott Smith, then you need to buy this record. It stays with you long after the listening is done.
A clear and preemptive attack on "Biodome"
author: Bryan SmithCan't rate it just yet. I'd hate to say I love Jon Brion's solo album just because I heart everything else he's ever been involved with. I simply just need more time to digest it. Or play it in it's entirety more than twice.
genius
author: AnnieSo happy with the purchase. Huge fan of Jon Brion. I would love to catch him live. just completely awesome.
- author: thomas l.
This is a beautiful CD. I can't think of a more original way to open your debut solo album than with the song, Gotta Start Somewhere. My other favorites are: Trouble; Hook, Line & Sinker; and Her Ghost. I can only hope Jon puts out another solo album soon. Check out the soundtracks for Punch-Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees, and Eternal Sunshine for more from him.
Cery Good. Excellent Songs, Excellent Production
author: David CooganIf you enjoy Aimee Mann or the Grays you will equally enjoy this. Jon Brion still has all the creative energy and production skill that he contributed to those efforts.
check it out
author: tim sandifordi travelledfrom london to see jon play in l.a and it was well worth the journey! the song writing is fantastic, his voice is wonderful and the musicianship is beautiful. get this album.
The best of the pop genre.
author: Christopher BI ordered Jon Brions CD not knowing much about him except for his work with Aimee Mann. All I have to say is WOW, this has to be some of the most creative music I've encounterd. This is coming from a guy who listens to Rush, Dream theater, Allan Holdsworth, and Greg Howe. Brion has totally refreshed the way I listen, write, and enjoy music.
Listening to Meaningless makes good things happen.
author: LizThis record makes life seem fine, like everything will be ok. Things makes sense. Puzzle pieces fit. He has a comforting voice and a special gift for songwriting. I feel lucky to have a copy of this record! Thanks CD Baby!
es muy bueno, me gusta mucho
author: MartEl CD me parece muy bueno, y es una lástima que sea un desconocido en España. Me recuerda a Macartney. Fantástico, muy melódico.
a damn shame not many people know this exists!!!
author: Craig IrvingSeriously, I was shocked when I discovered this CD existed. I was in love with Jon Brion's production work, film scores with PTA, and work with Jellyfish...but I had NO idea this album existed. When I found out I ordered it as fast as I could from CDBaby and loved it. It's genius. The best pop album I've heard in ages. I hope Jon Brion makes another album soon. Until then, I'll be listening to this one over and over again.
An amazing, solid album, with a great rhythm and lyrics
author: ZoesephThis is just an all around genuinenly great CD. It's upbeat alternative sound works at parties, in the car or studying. The whole Album flows exquisitely from start to finish. It's a staple for anyone's collection.
Sublime!
author: Johnny V.This has become one of my favorite CD's of all time. Jon Brion is one of my idols! Great songs, great sounds, I listen to it all the way through every day! Genius!
Terrific album from extremely talented musician more people should know about
author: Aaron CampbellAn all around outstanding album. From the first song, Gotta Start Somewhere, to the last song, his cover of Cheap Trick's "Voices", Brion offers eleven well-crafted songs in every sense of the word. A very diverse album, the album tends to get better with each passing listen. Lyrically, musically, and vocally, a stellar effort.
Impeccable pop songs with loving attention to detail
author: willie hinesFirst of all, "Meaningless" is anything but. Jon wears his heart AND soul on his sleeve, but it's his wit that gets him through, and it's his attention to detail that makes for interesting listening. "I Believe She's Lying" and "Ruin My Day" give the McCartneys and Gershwins and Rundgrens a run for their money. A thoroughly engaging collection of pop songs for hopeless romantics everywhere.
The real deal, all songwriters take a listen and learn
author: Drayton MichaelsThis collection of songs is the real deal. All songwriters take a listen and learn. Sure you can hear the influences on Brion's sleeve, however it is his voice and his delivery that seperate him from the copy cats and re-hashed pop song writers. Stunning work, awaiting record number 2!

Disappointment
author: Ben"Meaningless" was a big disappointment for me. That's not to say that Jon isn't talented, but I was hoping for the beautiful, lilting Punch Drunk Love soundtrack and got a mediocre pop record. Past the initial disappointment upon hearing this record, there were no further surprises - no unique twists, no interesting arrangements or instrumentation - just straight pop. "Meaningless" is the indie rock N'Sync. I hate to say that about someone as talented as Jon, but that's the way this record comes across. If you're looking for something unique, strange and beautiful, look somewhere else. All you'll find here is a bad Belle and Sebastien record.
Beautiful Beatles-like pop
author: DatGreat cd if you love the Beatles, and PT Anderson film scores.
Jon is Wicked Awesome
author: ZookThis CD is really good. I would advise anyone to buy this CD. He is a great artist who writes great lyrics. Buy it people!
nice
author: jimmythanks jon...this cd encourages us to believe that current pop music can still have great melodies and substantive lyrical content. maybe pop music artistry is not dead after all! great cd.
beautiful
author: David MBeautiful music. Thankyou Jon.
voices is a great cover!
author: bobby cuff of the grievous angels and blacksheep music productiojon, your version of voices is great!...sounds like cheaptrick done in a big star style...fragile, delicate, and vunerable...i love it...ps..i was the guy who requested procal harum at your show a while ago...you played shine on brightly...it funny and ultimately great...thanks...see you soon...i'll be in the front row with the dreads!...maybe you could cover "jesus" by the velvets next time!!!
highly recommended
author: Sean ConneallyI only recently stumbled upon the realization that many of the compact discs/cassettes/etc. amassed in my music collection had a common thread running through them... a fantastically modernistic, mellotronically power-popped jangly-sweet thread... Jon Brion. On Meaningless, Brion capitalizes on the chance to make songs that shine all on their own, and makes it sound so damn effortless it's striking. "I Believe She's Lying", with it's bright acoustic guitar flourishes, clever lyrical cadence and lushly harmonized vocals, demands an immediate repeat listening. The moody "Her Ghost" and "Voices" both invoke the best elements of Beatles-esque experimentation and 70's pop hooks. Meaningless comes highly recommended, and after listening to it I am left with but one question: Hey Jon, when's the next one coming out?
classic cd
author: popstar1964just a solid album all around and the cover of Cheap Trick's "voices" is stunning. you can't go wrong with buying this cd!
The best album The Beatles never made.
author: Gus GI found this album via the cover version of the song 'Trouble' as performed by Mutual Admiration Society. Jon Brion doesn't have much of a profile in the UK, he's mostly known here as a movie soundtrack composer. This album isn't even available in Europe so thank God for CD Baby! I love this CD it's never off the stereo and I have been positively haranguing people about its merits. Please Jon, if you're reading this, record another album soon.
Fantastic, honest music.
author: Matthew McVickarGreat album! Strikingly honest and original, replete with interesting lyrics. Keep up the good work, Jon.
Great album if you love power pop
author: jeffThis is beautiful record with great songs. The only negative I feel is that sometimes the production gets a little in the way of the songs. On the positive, the songwriting and the technical and emotional performance (especially the vocals) are right on. I love that every part in the song is melodic and singable, and that each melody, while drawing from pop influences, is very original. Thanks to Jon Brion for making this great album, as well as contributing to the better musical world as a producer, soundtrack scorer, and studio musician. Reccommended songs: "Gotta Start Somewhere," "I Believe She's Lying," "Trouble," "Her Ghost"
Sometimes it’s not about knowing -- it’s about feeling.
author: Martin-JesseI caught wee jon brion @ LARGO and was blownaway. Never have I experienced such a beautiful and moving set. A wave of elation came over me... I am forever in LOVE with his CD. Meaningless leaves me speechless...
Pop is safe in Brion's sounds!
author: Jordan Oakes, Yellow Pills MagazineIn listening to Jon Brion's Meaningless CD, I put it to the same cranky test my ears automatically give new records. I've heard a lot of albums, and my neural hard-drive is running out of memory. At one time, finding the sort of pop music I craved was like finding a needle in a haystack -- or the Beatles in a playstack. Then Marshall Crenshaw came along (after the brilliant but esoteric Dwight Twilley), making the world safe again for "pop guys" -- meaning both those who play and those who listen. In years following, there was a string of talented people, such as Bill Lloyd, Tommy Keene, Scott Miller (of Game Theory and the Loud Family), Michael Penn and others who placed the Beatles above Journey or, on the other end, Husker Du. Now, in 2004, we're in the future I'd always hoped, in theory, would materialize: throw a ball now, and chances are it'll hit a pop guy. There's one around every corner, plying his trade, playing for the converted at well-meaning pop festivals. There's a lot of talent out there -- but, ironically, the more there is, the more it's spread out and the less seems to be bestowed on a magic few. The days when a guy like Todd Rundgren could come out of nowhere (well, Philadelphia) have been usurped by a diluted even-handed era -- a zeitgeist of not-quite-genius. Pop music, to use a stretch of a medical analogy, has become like the HMO's: taking shortcuts, homogenizing charts and generally doing as little as possible. As a genre, pop's been doctored with old tricks. I long for the days when music was under more critical care -- when a guy like Robert Christgau would hear, and spread, the magic of Big Star or Shoes. When Dave Marsh would rave about the Raspberries without a hint of irony. Jon Brion (yes, I finally mention him!)is a one-man affirmation that pop has survived. I won't even go into the songs. Because, hopefully, you will. They have wonderful, unfolding melodies with sincere and not overly verbose lyrics. The tunes grow on you (many other records need Rogaine for that to happen), which is always preferable to instant familiarization. What makes Brion better? It's a fine line -- or a great lyric. Who was the best Brill Building writing team? Goffin/King, Mann/Weil, or Greenwich/Barry? Sedaka/Greenfield maybe? There is no right answer. They were all brilliant timeclock tunesmiths. But when it comes to who was the best of *all* Brill Building bards, clearly it was Bacharach/David. They went that extra step. This is the difference between Brion and so many other one-man pop bands. He's not afraid to lift his voice into cloudy harmonies or push notes as if he were pushing the envelope. He even has the good taste to cover a Cheap Trick song, Voices, and make it his own by unearthing the melancholy beneath the melody. Contrary to its title, Meaningless is an album of great significance. For his second, I'd suggest he get a little weirder and more challenging. This is his Rubber Soul -- so naturally, I long for Brion's imminent Sgt. Pepper's. I think he already has it in him.
Excellent CD!! Must have for a great pop collection!!
author: keddiekeyI can't get some of the songs out of my head!! I've been singing "she goes for it everytime" from the song Hook, Line and Sinker. That's just one of many. WOW!! Great Great music!! Thanks to Jon for the time and effort so I can enjoy the sounds he hears. This sits right along my Jellyfish and Brian Wilson!! And I'd like to put in a special request for another album please!! Please!!
Fantastic intelligent pop
author: Andy CotterillA collection of almost perfect guitar pop moments, with intelligent lyrics and varied and colourful arrangements. 'gotta start somewhere' and 'ruin my day' are the highlights so far, although any of them could be as there is not a duff track here.
A very good album
author: Jim NorthcottThis is a very nice album, I really like the songs towards the end, Hook, Line and sinker, Voices, very nice. I also love the earlier stuff, I think Walking through walls is brilliant. I really look forward to another album of material. Jon Brion is a genius.
The Toppermost of the Poppermost
author: Ian PurtillIt baffles me that Jon Brion had such difficulty in getting his work released by Atlantic...the other reviews all state the attributes that Jon possesses in ample quantities; great songwriting, performing and production. If I lived in LA, every Friday night would find me keeping a barstool warm at Largo...
My FAVORITE CD
author: Annie ElliottYou know the when you first listen to a cd and you skip through each song just to get an overview. THAT ISN"T possible with this cd.....I haven't even been able to take it out of my cd player. And you would think since his songs are always playing in my head at this point.....
Could have been a beatle
author: Eat An Apple Publishingthat simple, he is as good as the beatles were
I really like this one.
author: Lindsey BlairJon Brion is a multi threat talent. He is a great songwriter, lyricist, producer, singer, arranger, guitarist, multi keyboardist ,drummer, and artist. The songs here are a very quirky modern version of 70's style pop. They bring to mind a Beatles, Todd Rundgren kind of thing. Elliot Smith is the only modern artist that I can think of to compare him to, but Jons songs are a little more "hooky" than Elliots. The production is very interesting, using sounds that are not the run of the mill stuff you hear on everybodys records. Some great mellotron, chamberlin keyboard textures and plenty of guitars. The arrangements are lean and never get in the way of the songs, using some great vocal arrangements as well. My favorite songs on Meaningless are the ballad tracks that end the album starting with "Hook, Line and Sinker". If real musical talent meant anything in the modern world of commercial music this guy would be a superstar, but we all know how that goes.
Guinness, coffee and a dollop of genius
author: A fanNo mere album could come close to approaching the spontaneously inspired, gleeful musicmaking of Jon Brion's legendary live shows, so perhaps it is in being a different animal altogether that "Meaningless" succeeds as well it does, relying instead on Brion's studio-bound pop smarts and considerable skills as a producer. It's a brilliant but understated album, always tasteful; the craftsmanship is impeccable throughout but never overwhelming. Factor all that in with Brion's genuinely affecting songwriting and you have as fine a portrait of one of pop's most shining and idiosyncratic talents as we're likely to get, at least until the long-promised "Live at Largo" finally gets a release. "Meaningless" is one of the best albums I've heard in years, and I've heard a lot.
Great Record
author: CPaceI went and saw Jon perform one of his weekly shows at Largo, and was blown away. I immediately bought the record and the soundtrack to Eternal Sunshine. Just a beautifully written and arranged record. Now, just waiting for a second record. When will that be??
Delicious pop.
author: Niklas SkrivarsHaving heard Brion's fantastic work on various PTA films, it came as no surprise to discover that his record, Meaningless, is a delicious collection of pop songcraft.
A truly great pop record
author: SteveThis is a great album, and I'm so glad I was able to still find this on CD (thank you CD Baby!)after having several burned copies over the years. All of these songs are great, especially "Gotta Start Somewhere" and "Hook Line and Sinker" but for me the highlight is the cover of the Cheap Trick classic "Voices." WOW! Jon took an already beautiful and intimate song and made it even more special. All I can say is, this album is fantastic. Great songs with a wonderful production (definitely worth a listen with head phones on). When is the next Jon Brion album coming?
So good it breeds envy
author: Edgar NunezYou ever hear a song that rings so true with you that you think to yourself 'I wish I would've written that song' ? Well I found myself saying that pretty much all through Meaningless. Sharp melodies, honest & soulful lyrics and a gift for wild instrumentation highlight this record, which has found itself into my daily CD rotation. If I had to pick a standout song here, it would no doubt be 'Hook, Line & Sinker', though 'Meaningless' comes a close second. I've about completely convinced myself to make the trek to Largo to check Jon out live soon just based on what I've heard here. So...in short, I urge you to buy it as soon as humanly possible. You'll be glad you did.
A great song craftsman
author: MignavJon Brion is a great pop song craftsman. Get passed initial fluff sound and try to figure out all that he is doing, like his live show. Walking through walls-gets you out of bed, blinds open, ready to charge. you can still ruin my day...very intimate realistic look at ex-lovers lingering inside of us. (damn them!)
An amazing, inspiring album from an extraordinary artist
author: Brandon RossThis album is absolutely amazing. Jon Brion uses his musical genious to envoke very off-kilter sounds and lyrics that will inspire and englighten the listener. The fact that Jon Brion played each single instrument on the album (except for on the song "Trouble") is highly impressive and intelligent. Highlights include I Believe She's Lying, Meaningless, Ruin My Day, Trouble, and Hook, Line, and Sinker. An excellent collection - don't be afraid to order.
Great songwriting !
author: bossguitarFantastic cd with inspired melodies and hooks galore. There is not enough songwriting these days that features a real ability to construct memorable tunes without dumbing them down. Jon Brion obviously has a keen sense of harmony and has listened to the pop and rock giants of times gone by. Pick this album up -you won't regret it.
- author: CD Baby
Jon Brion has not only carried on but escalated the pop-as-art tradition of late-period Beatles and Pet Sounds' Beach Boys. Listen to to complex arrangements of simple melodic pop songs. He's produced the recent albums by Aimee Mann, Brad Mehldau, Fiona Apple, and the masterful score to the movies Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love. POP FANS REJOICE. This guy is a god to me.
jonbrion, pop world needs more of you
author: d-wangJon Brion solo album showcases the same great singersongwriter material that his soundtrack scores demonstrate. I just wish there was a way to get his name more out there. If I hadn't seen Eternal Sunshine, I would have no idea who he is.
One of the most talented songwriters out there
author: Chad VonHinkenSee all those 5-star reviews on this page? They are there for a reason. This album is fantastic. If you like the soundtracks to "Magnolia," "Punch-Drunk Love," and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," you need this album. If you like Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Wilco or John Lennon, you need this album. If you like music with its heart on its sleeve and emotionally bare lyrics, you need this album. The only thing I don't like about this album is that it is only one CD. I want more Jon Brion.
The best new Aimee Mann album isn't by Aimee Mann
author: David YeendThank you, Jon Brion. Thanks for loading your songs with insight, charm, melody, and toe-tapping love. The Aimee Mann comparison is meant as a high compliment, as I love the lyrical cleverness and literate approach to writing you both seem to share. I will say that the several tracks here rock much harder than she has in a while, and I love that. Very Beatle-y, impeccable production, totally catchy, and above all, smart. Thanks Jon. Please do another one.
Jon Brion: Great movie composer, great producer, and now. . .great singer/songwr
author: Marr StantonJon Brion's 'Meaningless' is a fantastic effort. I am now firmly of the opinion that if Jon Brion has anything to do with an album of a movie, than it is a seal of approval and a sign of something special. The movies he's scored, all the other artists he's produced and played with and now this great album! The Beatlesesque style and the craft of his song writing make him every bit as good as Aimee Mann, Elliott Smith, Rufus Wainwright or any of the other artists he has worked with. I really hope we'll hear more from him soon.
Awesome! It just feels great to listen to!
author: LukeIts an incredible album. I am in to film scores and Brion caught my ear with his work with P.T. Anderson and in the new film Eternal Sunshine so I went looking for more. I found Meaningless, WORD! This album is SICK! I love the veriety of sounds on this album but it is all pulled together so nicely to create a consistant vibe or theme, like a film score. I can hear alot of his film score elements in his songs. My favorite track is Her Ghost. I know he wanted to use a real orcestra for this one but I think in the end the sampled strings and horns gave it a cool vibe. a bit hip hop like, I bob my head to it. any how, this is a great piece from start to finish. Highly recomended!
A true gem, a must for any true fan of real music.
author: JRykertThis cd is everything jon gives in his live performances. It's real and great fun to listen to. I began listening to JB in college and i still thoroughly enjoy those songs...hook line and sinker is truly one of the best songs ever written as is ruin my day. I wish he would put out more solo stuff but i do see his name all over other peoples records as well as on some really coool soundtraks like Eternal sunshine..love that one.
A great listen, again and again.
author: JudahThis is a great disc, just as good as all the reviews on this page would lead you to believe.
excellent, beautiful, fresh and essential !!
author: jean pascal boffo (France)I don't understand why this CD isn't better known ? Each song could be a hit-single ! One of the rare CD's I can listen over and over... A perfection with such a good taste... Songs, arrangements, performing and production are of the highest quality !
- author: Ryker Jones
Great. Like what everybody below me and above me said.
Wonderful and... well, wonderful
author: www.delicious6.comExcellent writing and performing. A substantive change in style from the Grays, which is the sound that most people will probably be expecting.
Superb!
author: Lee FarnanI have a piece of advice for everyone, go to CD BABY and search for every cd Jon Brion has had anything to do with, then buy them all!!! He is like some sort of musical wizard. As for Jon's solo effort 'meaningless' there simply is not a bad track on there, my personal faves are 'voices', 'same mistakes', and 'ruin my day'.
Amazing!
author: Jason SnyderThis CD showcases Jon's pop genius... he's the master of the 3:30 masterpiece. Every track on here is an absolute gem of Beatlesque pop. If you're ever in LA on a Friday night, be sure to check out Jon's live show at the Largo. It will be an unforgettable experience.
An Auteur of the highest degree
author: Rich SpencerIf Jon Brion could be the authority on what "Pop" means, the world would most definitely be a better place. I needn't say anything about his other work beyond the fact he's been a part of some of the best modern music I know. His sound and abilities are highly diverse, and everything works perfectly. He's also a decent singer which surely makes a difference!
Disregard Album Title!
author: Kiko JonesA wonderful album in the singer/songwriter vein with a healthy dose of classic pop chops, Meaningless begs for not just a followup but many more solo outings of this caliber from Mr. Brion.
Wonderful melancholy pop vibe.
author: Kevin McLeodIf you fell in love with the song "Here We Go" from Punch Drunk Love as I did. You will love this album. Jon Brion put together an amazing collection of songs built by his masterful skill of updating the classic 60's pop sound. Shame on the major record label that did not release this work of art to the world years ago. Jon, I fell for this album "Hook, Line, and Sinker ". We fans are waiting of another album, don't keep us waiting for the next PT Anderson film to hear from you.
Exquisite--an audio crazy quilt with embroidering and embellishments
author: Christine LlewelynI'd been haunted by Here We Go for months, and was getting a little desperate for more Jon Brion music when I discovered (and immediately ordered) Meaningless. It's a fascinating collection, ranging from bouncy to dreamy to sardonic to annoyed to resigned to...you get the idea. I fell in love with half the songs immediately; the remaining songs had such distinct personalitites (shy, prickly, even pushy) that I had to approach them more carefully until we'd warmed up to each other. Each time I listen to the CD, I uncover new layers and details and nuances to enjoy. Without a doubt, one of my favorite discoveries of the year.
Amazing and Beautiful!
author: TravisAfter being a fanatic of all P.T. Anderson's films, it's only natural that Jon Brion has become one of my favorite artists. He truly does justice to the title of "artist" and this album elegant and wonderful. Now I have had the opportunity of seeing his Largo show and my Fridays are booked for the rest of the year. Thanks Jon!!!
Absolutely fantastic -- worth the hassle
author: Chris HodgesAfter listening to "Here We Go" on the Punch Drunk Love CD (and being an addict to the Magnolia Score by Jon Brion for the last few years, I wanted to get this CD. My girl friend went to Australia and New Zealand, but couldn't find it anywhere. She continued to LA, but unfortunately, could only stay one day (and though her hostel was just round the corner of the Largo's, it was closed on that particular evening). In the end, I ordered it from overseas, but it was worth the hassle. The music is absolutely fantastic. It's just right out from the guts -- both the lyrics and the melodies. It hits the mark. Jon, please get more of it out in the shops. You still can make my day!
A Very Good Listen
author: Ron RichmondI hate to rate a talented songwriter this low, but. OK it is a great album that will probably grow on me. However, I bought it with his work with the grays playing in the back of my mind. Frankly this does not approach that work even remotely. That doesn't mean this isn't worth a look. His writing craft is tuned perfectly. I just think he benifits from the support and challenges of being with a band, especially a band as talented as the grays. I wish there was a 3.5 star rating.
Great Music from a great musician
author: Geoff ByrdThis is a beautiful, no artful collection of songs. Wonderful stuff my man. Paints a soundscape that mezmorizes...
One of America's Greatest Musicans
author: Luke HaverhalsI have been searching for something by Jon Brion for a while and I finally found it. Meaningless is a great album. Awsome lyrics, catchy hooks, and so much more. Each song paints a different picture and tells a different story which pop songs should be like. The album as a whole it wonderful. Her Ghost i would say is my favorite on Meaningless. Thanks Jon for making such outstanding music! Please do more albums
thank you for great music.
author: nateWhat can I say except that its a great cd!? Such quality, such absoulte goodness in my opinion, thats its impossible not to love. refreshing, and just plain good music. If you like anything or everything else that J. Brion has done (P.T. Anderson films. . Punch Drunk Love...playing with Rufus Wainwright...producing Brad Mehldau's Largo) then I think you'll have no complaints about this cd. none at all.
walking through the walls of your head
author: marcoit will be one of my favourites this year (top5 of 2003). perfect pop music, but it's not that simple pop stuff. wonderful compositions. more mature than badly drawn boy. more interesting than aimee mann.
Artfully produced and written
author: Elizabeth HollingsworthWhile I enjoyed this album the first time I heard it, I wouldn't have realized what a staple it would become in my listening repertoire. The lyrics are poignant, original, and personal. The music maintains a comfortably brisk pace and succeeds in being catchy without being annoying. You'll hum along, but the melodies won't plague you when you lay down to sleep. This album is very easy to like, and with repeated listening, you'll come to love it.
Pop the way it should be
author: StbhillDon't let the ironic title fool you; this is a wonderful CD. Walking Through Walls is a catchy tin-pan alley update, while Ruin My Day and Gotta Start Somewhere can stand alongside the 60s pop classics Brion clearly loves.
Jon Brion should be producing for the greats...
author: Josh 3000What a fantastic album. He should hook up with more independents, because his production is masterful.
wow this is amazing ,catchy original songwriting -Buy It
author: benjain phillipsthis album is full of beautifull melodies and well crafted songs that you wont get tired listening to again and again. I got into Jon Brions work from the soundtrack to Punch Drunk Love and the score to Magnolia but this cd is even better. It reminds me of the Beatles, Harry Nilson, Michael Penn and Aimee Mann so if you love inspiring , original songwriting check it out and buy a copy now. oh -and if hes released anything else can somebody let me know ?!
One of my favorite albums
author: Aron RecordsThe songs on this album consist of everything that I like about music.
Great Independent CD
author: Stemming MusicJon's CD is pure Independence. The tunes are produced with a keen sense of creativity, glowing with solo vision - I know he has some guest artists involved but this is pure Brion - an inspiration to the individual spirit. There are lots of sounds flying around this pop production. Great songwriting colored with tricks that push the tunes forward. Some tracks are simply presented while others are filled with his crafty studio skills that prove most affective. Very tasty stuff.
Terrific Slice of Micro-Managed POP
author: Bruce Lomet (CHINASKI)"Meaningless" is a terrific slice of micro-managed pop, flush with multi-tiered melodies and the kind of sonic detailing the Beatles and George Martin used to get a kick out of. My favorite tracks are "Walking Through Walls," a jaunty number co-written with Grant Lee Phillips, and the concluding "Voices," an old Cheap Trick song with a music box introduction and subdued piano melody.
wow. this is the real deal....
author: J-BALLgreat sounds, great production. catchy, melodic music. this is a must have CD period. get with it...
no one does it better
author: powerpopperI can remember the first time I heard Jon Brion. It blew my mind and them some. I am a production student at Berklee school of music and after I heard him play I didn't think their would be any reason to continue. He does it all with style and grace. He is a Mozart of his time. A true genious. Meaningless is a great taste of Jon's solo literature. It is sweet and simple, while thought provoking and intellegent. He is a master of sound and he lets it be known on Meaningless. I highley recomend this albulm. On a side note, seeing Jon Brion preform fridays at Largo is must for all.
this is not about your c.d., but please read message.
author: Cindy GilmoreI have a nephew who loves your work and I was wondering if you have any T-shirts with your picture on it (you know like a concert T-shirt)he would love one for his birthday. so if you could get back to me and let me know that would be great. thanks so much, cindy
Classic.
author: Robert RabieeAs perfect a pop record as has been released in the last couple of years. The depth and delicacy of the lyrics (particularly in "I Believe She's Lying" and "Ruin My Day") is overwhelmed only by the brilliance of the songs themselves. "Trouble" in particular is pop music at its best, moving and magnificient, a melancholy baby of a song, maybe Edward Gorey in love. In short, a brilliant record, particularly in its slower moments - "Ruin My Day," "Trouble," "Dead to the World," "Same Mistakes," and the sublime cover of Cheap Trick's "Voices."
