"Live Lunch" LEO (Louisville Eccentric Observer)
It would be difficult not to like the Juggernaut Jug Band. For years (in various incarnations) these guys have melded traditional jug band music with jazz, blues, swing, ragtime and rock to create an honest sound to go with a fun stage show. This album is a recording of the band's July 1,2005 appearance on WFPK's Live Lunch, and it captures not only the essence of one of Louisville's tightest bands, but also the essence of jug music itself. Here, the Juggernauts deftly cover the Memphis Jug Band and Whistler and His Jug Band- original jug bands from the 1920's - and in the true JJB tradition, also capably offer well-chosen, tongue-in-cheek covers like Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gimme Three Steps" and the Doors' "People Are Strange". They seems happiest, however, rollicking through traditional tunes like "The Sheik of Araby", goofy classics like "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady", and the traditional folk/bluegrass number "Chicken Pie". And if you've never heard the song "You Gotta Have Skin"(You gotta have skin/It keeps your insides in), that's reason enough to buy this disc. It's a must-have for JJB fans, and not a bad intro for the unitiated. Kevin Gibson LEO

Summer 2006 - Vol. 50 #2 - SING OUT! magazine
"Live Lunch"
Taken from a live radio concert, this is mostly a good-time set of vintage jugband, swing, ragtime, and Tin Pan Alley songs. They also include a couple of more recent songs including a stangely delightful version of the Doors' "People Are Strange." This CD will surely put a smile on you face and set your toes to tapping. -MR

Simply put, these guys are great! Each is a very good musician in his own right. Together, the result is pure 4-star fun! Their cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" is a stand alone hit, and, if you can believe it, they improve on Groucho's "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady." Just relax and give yourself over to the fun side!

Fun,witty and great musicianship exhibited. Great takes on covers, very good originals. don't be put off by the term "jug band". Check out their website and listen to samples. Highly recommend.

  • WOW

Brilliant fun, for brightening dull afternoons or for an extra bounce to spring days; my whole family loved it all. They are talented musicians that appear to play from their joy of life rather than any musical score. CDBaby also gave an excellent personal service, and to my surprise I received an email from one of the Juggernauts themselves a few days ago (thanks Gil).I'm one happy customer! Thanks!

Having seen the band live, this recording brilliantly captures the soul of their live performance. Clearly they love the music, and you won't find better exponents of their tradition. Buy the CD and you won't stop smiling.
