Danny Kalb All Together, Now [self-produced] A guitar god in the pre-Jimi Hendrix, early 1960s, when he played on albums by Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, and Judy Collins and founded the influential Blues Project. Danny Kalb continues to show his instrumental mastery. Kalb's second album, All Together Now, following a nearly three decade absence from the studio, is a text-book of six-string wizardry. Performing mostly solo, Kalb rewrites folk, blues and jazz standards, Christmas tunes and originals -- including a heartfelt tribute to the late Dave Van Ronk -- with his highly proficient playing. It will be, hopefully, a Positive, Healing responce to the tragedy of 9/11. This is Danny's 1st release in 12 years and shows that like fine wine, his playing and singing only gets better with time.

A protege of the great Dave Van Ronk, Kalb established himself on New York's seminal folk and blues scene in the '60s, where he was first known as a solo performer and session player wjth Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, and others, and later in The New Strangers duo with Sam Charters. In 1965, Kalb founded Verve/Folkways recording group, The Blues Project, with Al Kooper, Roy Blumenfeld, Andy Kulberg,
Tommy Flanders and Steve Katz. Even today, this important group flourishes with ......numerous album reissues/compilations (MCA, Polygram, Rhino, One Way).
According to Sam Charters, "It was generally conceded... that ... Kalb was the most exciting of the new players. We met when we were both playing in Dave [Van Ronk'sl Rag-time Jug Stompers... After these apprentice years... he became a founder of The Blues Project, one of the seminal rock bands of the '60s... He still performs in Greenwich Village clubs, and... has been working on an album which combines his
extraordinary blues technique with some of the new, free guitar music... His touch on the guitar is as exciting and as individual as ever."
From folk to blues to jazz, Danny Kalb's experimental mindset and talent played a significant part in redefining musical genres and boundaries. Danny Kalb's story continues to unfold as he brings his incendiary guitar style to a new generation of students, musicians and fans.

  • Mostly Instrumental, but very nice, relaxing, and on the peaceful side.

    Although I usually need vocals to be really satisfied, I found this mostly instrumental recording very nice, relaxing, and on the peaceful side. I probably would have enjoyed more vocals, but I'll be picking up Danny's other album in print. As mentioned in other reviews Shake Sugaree has a nice vocal, although I'm very partial to the Po'Girl version, not to mention the original. Over all I find this recoding really nice and relaxing to listen to. Check it out!

    I find the musical performances on Danny Kalb: ALL TOGETHER NOW, especially moving. Danny Kalb's guitar virtuosity is almost an offhand thing. I never get the impression that he's trying to show off, only that the guitar is his voice and that he is at ease with every nuance of it. I believe this is especially evident in the instrumentals: COME BACK BABY BLUES, and SONG TO MORNING. There are, however, no weak selections on this CD. In the years since Kalb first started recording, his singing voice has changed somewhat. It has never been what you might call pretty, but it's been strong and used in a way consistant with the material he is doing. On ALL TOGETHER NOW, he eliminates any vocal embellishments and cuts straight to the bone. He sings on just two tunes: Shake Sugeree, and Two Trains Running, both long time standards in his repertoire. On both he delivers spare and powerful performances. Danny Kalb is one of the greatest artists performing on the guitar today. Occasionally, but not too often, you hear a musician who is both a master of his instrument and an artist of great depth. On his CD ALL TOGETHER NOW, he is both.

    Although there are only 2 vocals on this recording, this CD is a great example of how Kalb has both matured and grown as an artist. This is a set of relaxed, introspective and meditative acoustic instrumentals - mostly blues, and Kalb's technique is complex, clean and precise, as is the recording sound-wise. Of the 2 vocals on the CD, I think "Shake Sugaree" is what sold me on the CD - it's worth the price of admission.
