notes

Songwriter, Vocalist, Guitarist

Kathy Smock has come a long way from the town in Indiana where she grew up. And the journey has been much more than taking the road from there to Chicago, and on to New York, and now to Austin. Along the way Kathy put in her time and paid her dues. In Chicago at only 18 her world opened up to the power and magic of rhythm and blues, and for the first time she awoke to her own potential in that city of music.

She moved on to New York, maneuvered her way into a job at the Blue Note just to be around the stage when musicians from Dizzy Gillespie to Bobby Blue Bland cast their spells on the stage. All the while she was learning and working, dedicating herself to write better songs, to become accomplished on the guitar. And always there was that voice, rich and strong and so uniquely hers that landed her gigs at The Bitter End, Visiones, and Don Hill's. All the while her music was changing, no longer a way for Kathy to, as she puts it, "get out of my sorrow," but slowly evolving as a way for her to reach out, to "bring a little peace to someone without peace, soothe those who hurt." Then she adds, with a smile, "And sometimes it feels good just to belt one out!"

  • Luminous offerng comes from Smock
    author: Austin Chronicle....Margaret Moser

Another luminous offering comes from Kathy Smock with Sweet Nothing. It's as good a rock debut as Mina Mauldin's SuperPsychoticQueen last year, but layered more percussively. No surprise there, as Austin percussive dynamo Courtney Audain produced and arranged the album, yet it's Smock's songs that really shine; she wrote or co-wrote all 12. Standouts include "I'm Falling Down"; "Shoe Song," with its Southern rock feel; and the title track, all of which signal that Smock is something else.

  • Storms & Tatoo's
    author: Liza Field

Listening to Storm Song will make you realize how delicate an animal we are, spending most of the time trying to hide inside. It appears it should only be temporary, as the skin just needs to shed. So let it shed. Listening to Tatto Song for me conjured up so much imagry; a spine beneath a very thin exterior, revealing it's history, and gracefully finding the right skin. Brilliant.

  • Soulful & Sexy & Real
    author: Liza Field

I am reminded that music is that little knudge to allow you to feel something. We all have peeks and valleys, colors and temperaments and this artists not only knows them well, she helps you strip away the shell and get real. This music is timeless, classic and we absolutely love her in L.A. This band is a diamond that has been in the rough, taken it's time to get there, and quite frankly that is the only way. Be thankful they kept the pulse.
