Simply put, on their first CD, Kinsale are playing favorites. Kinsale chose songs and tune sets from their standard repertoire that have made Kinsale popular with Baltimore audiences. These choices include standard Irish songs, such as "McAlpine's Fusaliers" and "The Fields of Athenry," and jigs and reels, such as "the Trip to Sligo" and "the Morning Dew." Kinsale did include a non-Irish song, "the Queensland Drovers," which comes from Australia.
Kinsale is the name of a beautiful seaside town in County Cork, Ireland, but the name has a more poignant significance: At the Battle of Kinsale in 1601, the defeat of the Irish Aristocracy initiated radical changes in Irish Culture and Society, including the fragmentation and decline of Irish Music. Because the Battle of Kinsale was a significant moment in Irish History, the band feels the town name is an appropriate choice for a traditional Irish Music band. The members of Kinsale believe they are helping to preserve and promote Irish Music, as well as sharing in its constant evolution.
Kinsale, previously known as the Windy Gap, has been performing together since May, 1997. The members include Terry O'Neill (fiddle, mandolin, backing vocals), Drew Vervan (guitar, lead vocals), and Lucien Walsh (bodhrán, double bass, backing vocals).
The trio regularly performs at festivals, ceilidhs, private functions, and local Baltimore clubs (most often at J. Patrick's Irish Pub). Their festival credits include the Takoma Park Folk Festival, the Harford Community College Folk Music Fest, the Glen Echo Irish Festival, the Allegheny Multi-Cultural Festival, and the Baltimore Irish Festival.
Kinsale is a traditional Irish music band; they perform energetic versions of Irish songs and dance music. Sometimes, they stretch that definition a little and include new material from Ireland's ever-evolving music traditions. At a Kinsale performance, you might hear the band's spirited reel sets and the "Star of the County Down," but you may also hear something from Solas, the Waterboys, the Pogues, or U2.
