"Sincerely," Lillian Butler's Debut Album
Her debut album features many tunes from her one-woman show, Jungle Alley Salutes Ladies of Jazz, a musical tribute to Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and Josephine Baker; as well as signature tunes by Dakota Staton, and Bessie Smith.
A native Californian, Lillian first began singing in school choirs and glee clubs. Even then, at an early age, the music of jazz and blues held a special place in her heart. Lillian remembers singing bedtime songs with her mother such as Tennessee Saturday Night and The Blues in the Night. Her love for the blues is evidenced in her playful interpretation of Gimme a Pigfoot and Good Daddy Blues.
Her career as a singer began in Santa Monica, CA. at "McCabe's Guitar Shop" where she showcased her talent as an R&B singer. Other successful Jazz & Blues gigs followed in Los Angeles at such venues as: "At my Place," "The Living Room," "La Lousianne," "Luna Park," "Overland Café," "Music Machine," "The Comeback Inn," and "Pinache" among others. During this time, Lillian also began taking acting classes and producing and starring in several musical theatre productions.
In 1993, Lillian relocated to New York City to pursue her career and develop her talents as a jazz singer. She has performed to sell-out crowds at the "Fifty Five Bar," "Sweet Water's" and "Cleopatra's Needle" to name a few. On a sleepless night in 1995, she began writing Jungle Alley Salutes Ladies of Jazz, and called upon veteran writer, arranger and pianist, Danny Holgate, to add his magical arrangements to bring the songs to life and to further tell the story. Ms. Butler and Danny Holgate, carefully selected each song to reflect the true spirit of Jazz music of the 20's and 30's while allowing for a fresh interpretation.
For the recording of "Sincerely," Lillian collaborated with Michael Raye of Hot Lance Music and added background vocals and strings to Willow Weep For Me and I Want to Be Loved, and teamed up with master improvisation vocalist, Dori Levine, on How High The Moon, to bring you a recording reflective of love, reverence, and a good measure of gaiety and sincerity.
In addition to Danny Holgate on piano, musicians include David Jackson, Bass; Frank Derrick, Drums; Jimmy Cozier, Tenor Sax and Tony Viscardo, Guitar.

author: danny butlerhow can you talk about the cd without talking about the lady on the cd. are you crazy? the artist is what makes the cd.i had never heard of lillian butler, but i loved the range and saucy tone in her voice and the material she was working with i think held back her true talent. dont be scared to jump out there and define yourself girl. the squeaky wheel gets the oil-remember.but p.o.t.e.n.t.i.a.l is written all over this cd. promote the cd more and lilian butler might just become a household name:).

I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to some of the cuts on Ms. Butler's debut CD. The excerpts I heard were enough to inspire me to purchase it. Lady DOES sing the blues! Way to go, Lillian! Keep up the good work!
