About Louis Babin

Louis Babin is a truly versatile artist who focuses his diverse talents on composing and teaching. He writes musical works for film, television, concert, theatre and song, easily adapting to the style required for each commission. Recognized for his unparalleled technological know-how, his facility with latest technologies enables him to compose rapidly, and with precision. In the realm of cinema, he has composed scores for films produced in Quebec and international co-productions with France and the USA.
Complimenting his roles as composer and teacher, Babin is a busy arranger, advisor and orchestrator for several orchestras, musical organizations and colleagues.
Louis Babin has garnered a number of honors over the course of his musical career. His first instrumental album, Mananara, which he also produced, received critical acclaim. He has been awarded grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. His original score for the film Zie 37e Stagen was nominated for a prize at the Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival.

A much sought-after teacher within the music industry, Louis Babin gives courses in composing to image using technological tools. He is one of the few in Canada Apple Certified Pro Trainer to teach Apple Logic software applications.

In his teaching role at the Université du Québec à Montréal graduate film music program (DESS), Louis Babin is directly involved in developing a new generation of film music composers.

Louis Babin is a member of the Boards of two important associations representing Quebec and Canadian film composers: la Société professionnelle des auteurs et compositeurs du Québec (SPACQ) ; and the Guild of Canadian Film Composers (GCFC).

Louis Babin has distinguished himself through his ability to consistently create musical works which appeal to a wide public. ‘It’s never easy describing my music,’ notes Babin. ‘You can talk about impressions, images and the concepts that guide you – in the end it is the impartial ear of the public that matters. We are all submerged in myriad influences of diverse origin. My music seeks to reflect the languages that swirl around us in a world of communication for which the term “global village” is no longer an ideal but a concrete reality experienced every day.’
Over the course of his career Louis Babin has also established a name for himself as a trumpeter. In 2007 he retired the trumpet from his repertoire in order to dedicate himself more fully to his many other musical activities. But Babin’s rich experience as a working musician throughout Canada and internationally has given him a deep sensitivity for the work demanded of musicians by composers. This empathy is a composer’s asset, always at the core of Babin’s compositions.

Louis Babin holds a Masters degree in instrumental composition from l’Université de Montréal, studying under the direction of Alan Belkin and Michel Longtin. He has also studied with several other respected teachers - including film scoring with American composer Don Sebeski, and cinematic orchestration with American orchestrator Scott Smalley.
