notes

Lucas release their long awaited debut album, "pieced from faded memory" on the 28th of August at what promises to be an unmissable show in the Roisin Dubh, Galway.
Recorded in New York with legendary producer Rob Fraboni (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and The Band) Lucas' album ranges from the "sublimely delicate to the raucously powerful" containing some of "the most amazing melodies and harmonies". Going by previous gigs in the Roisin Dubh, this will be an energetic party night to beat the band!
Lucas who have played support to such luminaries as Spiritualized, The Frames, Damien Rice, Juliette Lewis and David Kitt, released the first single "Snapshot", from their aforementioned debut album going straight into the Irish charts at number 34.

Galway based, Lucas are Alan Gray (vocals/guitar); Howard Evans (guitar); Paddy Flynn (bass) and Ray Butler (drums). Formed in 2000 they soon recorded their debut single "Little Devil" with ex Radiators man "Pete Holidai".
Things really began to happen for them in 2003 when they travelled to New York and started gigging in legendary venues 'Sin-E', 'Arlene's Grocery' and 'The Bitter End' amongst others. During this time playwright Jessamyn Fiore was putting together "The mysterious world of birds" featuring Lisa Hannigan (from Damien Rice's group) with Lucas performing the soundtrack.
Fiore approached Rob Fraboni to produce the soundtrack with Lisa Hannigan on backing vocals. Fraboni was so impressed with the music by Lucas that he offered to record an album with them later that summer.
"Lucas' songs are melodic & meandering with enough unexpected twists to maintain interest, and an ultra confident singer boasting a voice like Vedder's, but with the high notes; Lucas are extremely f**king good" : Fiona Reid, Hotpress
"Lucas' sound falls somewhere between the lighter moments of Pearl Jam and the sweet, melodic, heavenly gospel of Jeff Buckley" : Galway Advertiser

  • Haunting and powerful
    author: Helen Davies

Snapshot was the song that got me interested in Lucas and it resides on this album - to me, standing out as one of the best songs. That said, the album as a whole contains haunting melodies that stay in your mind long after you hear them. Alan Gray's vocals are heartfelt and the lyrics are powerful. In particular, New York Night and Coming Down work beautifully. I am very glad I bought this album and will be getting their new one too!
