notes
With "snarling guitar riffs," "ethereal crooning, " and "electronic textures," Lumina plays "roaring music that crackles and glows like a symphony of amplified fireflies," states Concord Monitor columnist Keith Meatto.
In a culture where the bureaucracy of the mainstream music business seems to rely solely on the amount of revenue that an artist can draw to justify the marketing of a product without considering the messages and creativity behind said product, Lumina wishes to set a new standard. They seek to reach fans through the coupling of positive, sociological messages with creative composition and form.
The members of Lumina all have experience playing in the local music scene, each member having been in a band since before high school. In the spring of 2000 drummer John Hoik II, formerly of the band Silk'n'Mud, joined forces with guitarist Chris Burns, bassist Justin VanNest, and vocalist Thomas Combs, the remaining three members of the now defunct Cultural Jetlag. "We come inside and they feel our hypocrisy, acidic tranquility radiates out onto them; and I'm thinking sheltered thoughts," Combs vocalizes, speaking from the fabricated perspective of an apprehensive, closed-minded member of higher society. "I hope to promote analytical, insightful thinking, as well as consciousness of one's own state of mind and being." Combs says, describing his motivation. Full song lyrics, and accompanying themes and commentaries, can be found on the band's website (http://www.mp3.com/luminamp3).
Having been together for two years, Lumina has progressed remarkably since its inception. The band's sound is characterized by the mix of crunchy yet flowing guitar riffs, groove-oriented drum lines, and mesmerizing keyboards. The instrumental aspect of their sound and the versatile vocal styles of Combs-abrasive and angst-filled at times, soaring and teeming with emotion at others-give the band a unique and fresh new sound, appealing to many audiences. Having played shows in Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and Maine, Lumina has begun to develop a growing fan base. The band strives for perfection and professionalism, and it shows in their performance. Over the coming months, Lumina hopes to make its presence known in New England and beyond.
