notes

What Are You? is Mara Levi's second solo album, following the success of her solo debut, Life's a Ball.

Mara's second solo CD is a departure from the style of her first solo release. Intentionally eclectic, the album and its title directly confront the notion that anyone can be easily defined, or that people should be expected to have an answer to the question, "What Are You?"

Mara recorded every track on the album from her home in DC, using only instruments that she could play herself. The result is an album that sounds less like top-40 radio, and more like a reflection of Mara's varied musical interests. Many of the background vocals were arranged to mimic vocal groups from the '40s and '50s; bass parts run the gamut from simple bluegrass to actual countermelodies; improvised trumpet and vocal parts join open voicings of common chords to add elements of jazz; one song takes its structure and background vocals directly from Johannes Brahms; old and new voicings and sounds combine to give the album a complex and very human range and diversity.

Mara will be touring in support of this new album beginning March 9th, 2007. Check her website, http://www.maralevi.com or her myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/maralevi to see when she's coming to your town.

  • Mara Knows Who She Is

I just received my copy of the CD two days before Mara's appearance in Easthampton. She is smart, talented, and a great person! I recommend this CD to the listener who wants some depth in their music. My favorite is the Homo Song, a clever, yet poignant look at the pains of coming out.

  • Loves It!

This gurl is awsome. Nothing more needs to be said!

  • I think I have an addiction
    author: Jules

First of all, it's definitely not obvious but every sound on the CD is Mara - Mara vocals, Mara percussion, Mara guitar - it's not only smokin' good music, it's damn impressive. The girl's hot, her music's hot - what more could you ask for? Oh, a song about Angelina Jolie? Well that's on there too. Listening to it will become one of those addictions you don't mind having.

  • One memorable song after another!
    author: GLF

I really love listening to this CD. I find myself going back to many of the songs, listening for and hearing new things each time. The basic melodies are memorable, but there's so much more to them! It's my current favorite CD. Can't wait for the next one!

  • Each song is like a breath of fresh air
    author: Emily

Have you ever been driving along, listening to a CD and all of the sudden you realized that track 2 sounded the same as track 4, which was exactly like track 5, which sounded a whole lot like track 1, which sounded amazingly similar to this other CD you have? Yeah, that won't happen with this CD. Every song is unique. You'll have to listen through at least three or four times before you can confidently name a favorite song--they're all that good! Personally, I like "Drink it Down," "Change My Mind," and "Soft of Your Skin" the best.
