Authentic Blues
author: Tom PassamonteI love this CD. Marcy & Co. provide the listener with a generous helping of authentic blues.I play it all the time! Marcy Levy is one of America's best!
Another good one from an underestimated artist
author: Pat McCurdy (N.O.La.)First saw Marcy on tour with E.C. in the mid 70's and knew she was great but had no idea of her roots or depth. It's all here, in great form and with great backing. The guitar and harmonica are an excellent venue for Marcy's sort of "get in your face" vocals. Give this one a try, you'll be glad you did.
Worth the Wait
author: Terry MalinAfter see Marcy at the Chicago Blues Fest last year I was looking forward to hearing more of her work. The CD is GREAT. The only thing is I would have like to have seen is more info in the liner notes. And would have like to heard Marcy on the harp which according to the liner notes she did not play. Hope Marcy makes it to the Cincinnati area in the near future.
Excellent!!!
author: Oliver SweetingThis album has been a while coming but was definitely worth the wait. My favourite tracks are Lay Down Sally, Forget About Me, Sugar Daddy and Hold To Your Money but there isn't a dud on here - the album starts as it means to go on with all but a few tracks being upbeat, funky, sassy, rich guitar and harmonica led blues in a variety of styles and rhythms. Marcy (and the band), you're great!!!
Definitely worth investigating!
author: Neal Wickens (UK)Having been a fan of Marcy under her "Detroit" moniker since her days in Shakespears Sister, I was intrigued about this album and indeed had been waiting patiently for it since it was first mooted a few years ago and I wasn't disappointed. The obvious link for a young spring chicken like me was Eric Clapton with whom Marcy co wrote "Lay Down Sally". This isn't the first time Marcy has re-recorded this classic track, as it was a b-side to a solo single about 12 years ago (yes I'm a trainspotter) but this new version is a far more organic, honest interpretation, given a warmth that perhaps was missing before. The harmonica adds a true grit feel to the album as a whole, with Marcy's guitar work of the highest calibre. Her exquisite voice takes you in and consumes you as you listen. If you like real earthy blues of the highest order then this album is definitely worth trying. You won't be disappointed!
The Upside of being, Up There!
author: Mike BradleyThis is Marcy's official release of her blues CD to mark the completion of what has proved to be an album with classic album status. It's one of which you'll play and play for years to come, due to the confident lyrics, most of which were penned by Levy herself. She plays divinely, with an ease and grace that melts you straight into her natural role as the 'Blues Chanteuse.' It's quite natural for Levy, who has travelled back to her roots growing up in Detroit and recently performing with some of the Blues greats in Chicago. The Album plays on her own soulful experience, due to the sincerity in her voice and the great undertones of her band, who back her up brilliantly. Michael Fell, her Harmonica player, performs brilliantly, on his mouth organ as well as the other guys on their little team of bluesical bliss. The album contains so many wonderful tracks, which get your feet tapping and make you want to move! The Upside of Bein' Down, as a title track works very well, and compliments Levy's vocal talent. Other personal favourites would have to be the very sexy, Cotton Candy, which makes you wanna eat the Album up whole and the whole package is one sure, sweet listen!
Great performance as well as Bob Seger's back band days!
author: Takayoshi "Fats" HattoriAll the things I know about Marcy Levy is that she once was a member backing Bob Seger and Eric Clapton as one of bunch of Tulsa musicians. I don't know much about Mercela Detroit and Shakespear Sister days. Anyway, this is a real good CD, when you are especially fond of blues, R & B, or country music. "Lay Down Sally", co-written by Marcy and first released as one song contained in Eric's "Slowhand" album is re-recorded. This is a good example, I think. In comparison with Sir Clapton, Marcy's vocal and her band's performance is much more excellent. Please try this CD, if you are fond of the roots music.
