"Warhol Highway, Brando Skies...
Deliver me, to waiting eyes...."
Performing Songwriter Magazine named Mare Lennon's debut CD "Chasing Sacred" a Top Twelve DIY Pick. "Warhol Highway" is the follow-up CD for this native of St. Paul, Minnesota. Lennon moved to Los Angeles working with top singer-songwriters in an incredible circle of friends. Those very talented performers include: Matthew Lee, Edward Tree (producer) Robin Pearl, Jill Holly, Amilia k Spicer, Mark Islam, Maia Sharp, Hugo Fernandes, Lisa Johnson, Claudia Russell, James Grey, Severine Browne and James Cobberly Smith. "Warhol Highway" is the musical journal of the venture into and out of Los Angeles. Featuring seven originals by Lennon, and two covers:
"Love Don't Care" (written by Matthew Lee) was picked up for placement in the independent film "Burning Annie". The beautiful guitar work of Edward Tree echoes the folk/jazz vocal of Lennon, who brings to mind Nora Jones on this stellar track. "California Stars" (lyrics by Woody Guthrie, music by Tweedy & Burnett) is given a melancholy, more contemplative spin, where California is missed, much like a long lost friend or lover.
2001 brought a move back to the Twin Cities for Lennon. "Warhol Highway" is the musical journal of the venture into and out of Los Angeles.
Stand out tracks include:
"Exit Babylon" brings elements of folk, middle eastern, and hip-hop rhythms and textures to create a sensual backdrop for the caravan into and out of Los Angeles.
"I drove into Babylon, a black cat at my side..."
"Warhol Highway" Title track, Study of the lanes we pick in life,chosing the road over a more conventional life. "The Beauty of your Life" they tell me is you can just pack up and go"- "The Beauty of your Life" I tell them, "You have someone who will say no-"
"Hat in Hand" features Matthew Lee and Edward Tree creating a lush jazz/blues backround for this tale of a lover's apology: "Trying to figure out what shoes to wear, I chose the ones that'll just, get me there"....
"Revolving Door" is a tale of two potential lovers caught in a revolving door.
"Will you practice magic, or slight of hand, again?"
"Where Mercy Finds Me" The exquisite guitar playing of Edward Tree paints the backdrop for this most timely and optomistic exit. "I can't give into the dreams that you weave, the cheap tricks you use, you forget, I've already been seduced.."
Mare Lennon grew up surrounded by music. Taking the varied influences of jazz, folk, and rock, she has woven these colors along with life experiences into songs that possess imagination and heart. Whether backed by a band, or more preferably, acoustic solo, audiences respond in kind to this voice on the L.A. and now, Twin Cities, singer/songwriter circuit.
In 2002 Lennon was chosen to participate in the Cheryl Wheeler songwriter workshop by the Lavalee Family Trust in Salt Lake City UT. 2001 brought a prize win for the IAMA/KRCL singer-songwriter competition in Partk City UT.
Othe contests include: a national finalist in the Wildflower Music Festival songwriting competition in Richardson Texas, and the Wintertide Songwriting Contest in Martha's Vineyard.
Performances include: the OXYGEN Tank Tour, the Durango Songwriter's Expo, the Freemont Theatre's "Listening Room Concert Series", the National Academy of Songwriter's "Acoustic Underground" at the Troubadour, Billy Block's Western Beat (Nashville and Los Angeles), and featured performer on "Local Licks" a showcase for talent on L.A.'s KLOS FM 95.5.
