notes

Pull down your shades and light some candles. A simple, yet poignant blend of jazz and folk is headed your way. At 22, singer-songwriter Melody Gardot has a hauntingly smooth voice that can melt even the coldest of hearts.

Drenched in a sublime vapor of mellow blues, eclectic folk, and the faintest essence of jazz, she breaks forth with her debut full length album, Worrisome Heart. The record is an effervescent 11-track collection of original songs co-produced by Melody Gardot and Grammy-Award winning producer Glenn Barratt. With a superb narrative and inventive vocal-scat patterns, the pianist/guitarist tackles heartache full on by way of velvet tongue and alluring disposition.

Not that popularity should drive you, but if you wondered what people are saying:

Gardot is exquisite. With the capacity to express and evoke like the irreplaceable Nina Simone, I hope Gardot’s gift deepens widens and slowly smolders for many many years to come.

Worrisome Heart – Melody Gardot Every so often you discover a hidden gem and that is exactly what happened when I discovered quite by accident – Worrisome Heart by American singer/songwriter Melody Garbot. With so many female singer/ songwriters emerging it is hard to find someone who stands out from the crowd and has a sound unique to themselves but Melody is an exception to that rule. It is hard to pigeon whole Melody’s music but if she does have to fall into one category I would suggest that category is ‘jazz’. Her voice is delicate and has a dreamlike quality about it. If you were to hear an angel sing then this is what it would sound like! Worrisome Heart is a truly magical selection of songs that you never want to end. Although only just over half an hour long the album feels like it goes on for a lot longer. However long the album lasted it would never be enough – this is music at its very best, pure and unadulterated quality. Melody’s vocal style has been compared to many top female names including the legendary Eva Cassidy, Billie Holiday and Norah Jones to name just a few. I would like to add to that mix Katie Melua and the extremely talented jazz singer Madeline Peyroux. All that said I think Melody has a truly unique sound of her own – maybe because she harnesses all that is good from the singers she has been compared to and turned it into a sound all of her own? Melody’s vocals have a slightly raw sound to them and also an old sound as if she has been plucked from a time long gone by. These qualities give Melody’s vocals an extra edge and make her stand out from the crowd. For someone so young Melody makes music that sounds like she has been around singing and making records for years and years. Melody’s debut album carefully combines jazz with a dash of folk; a hint of pop and a splash of old style country. All this whipped together makes for a truly outstanding and rather wonderful CD. This is an album for relaxing to after a hard day at the office, for lying in the bath and chilling out to or for that sophisticated dinner party. However that said this isn’t an album full of whimsical lyrics that you can brush under the carpet. This album contains cleverly crafted songs all written by Melody. A sultry photo on the album sleeve really adds to the highly polished performance Melody gives on this ten out of ten album. I personally loved every one of the songs on the album and found it extremely hard to pick just one favourite or outstanding track. If I was pushed then I would have to say that – Love Me Like A River is my favourite on the album. The opening track on the CD is also the title track – Worrisome Heart. As the music gets going you almost expect to hear the popular jazz song Summertime burst forth but this is not an album full of covers, all original songs on this CD; which it has to be said is something quite rare these days. Worrisome Heart is a song about men and finding a new man who will love the woman in the song even though she carries a lot of baggage and has a ‘worrisome heart’. This is a dreamy song with slow, atmospheric music to accompany it. The use of the trumpet and saxophone in this song really give it an added edge. All That I Need Is Love is a catchy song with a lively tune. It is breezy and light, ideal for a summers evening. I am reminded of Madeline Peyroux when listening to this track. Again this song is about men and more importantly a lack of them. Love and men seem to play a big part in the lyrics of this exciting album. Katie Melua comes to mind when listening to the delightful third track on the album called Gone. Melody manages to mix her vocal sound up on this album – from the dreamlike sounds of Madeline Peyroux to the deeper vocals of Katie Melua and beyond. Sweet Memory has overtones of old style country music plus a hint again of Madeline Peyroux. Listening to this song it evokes an image in my mind of being out in the fields with the sun beating down on my back. The grass is dried up from the constant heat of the sun. I love it when a song is able to capture my imagination and this song does just that. Melody is reminiscent of early Norah Jones in the song Some Lessons. I also think that there is a touch of the very talented singer Shelby Lynne in her vocals. I like this song a lot as it is very atmospheric – lyrically and musically. It is very true – some lessons we have to learn the hard way. Another catchy song on the album is Quiet Fire, which features the lyric – ‘all I want is somebody to love me’. I love the use of the bass on this track – it really brings the song to life and takes it to another level. I am reminded here again of Shelby Lynne. One Day is another striking song with a lovely trumpet section. ‘One day you will be mine’ Melody sings and I think after listening to her CD you are definitely under her spell – captivated forever by her magnificent vocal talents. Love Me Like A River reminds me a little of the classic song - Cry Me A River. The music is a little similar yet the lyrics are very different. This is quite a dramatic song and you can feel the passion oozing out throughout the song. This strikes me as a song that is very dear to Melody’s own heart. I would love to see her perform this song live. Goodnight rounds off the album and is another more up-tempo song. Again the bass features heavily in this track and really helps to set the tone and mood of the song. The album ends with a short piece of dreamlike music featuring Melody on guitar. Although short it is a nice way to round off the album and still leave you wanted and longing to hear more. Worrisome Heart is an album that only comes along once in a blue moon. An album that will live on in your heart and soul for years to come. Melody’s vocals have the ability to capture your emotions and your heart. I only hope and pray that it is not too long before another album bursts forth from Melody and listeners and fans can once again become absorbed in a sound that feels like you are in heaven.

Great CD! Has a lot of the same songs as the album, "Some Lessons" Great to listen to in traffic, or a bubble bath.

  • Inspiring and slightly Heartbreaking (in the good way)
    author: Joshua Aromin

Upon listening, I was not so much struck by Melody's vocals as I was by the whole package. The songs on this album are a great combination of emotions from a singer that seem to captivate from the start of the album to the end. The album pretty much encapsulates the needs of a 22 year old woman that knows what she wants but cannot quite find it yet. After listening through the album even once, it felt like I knew Melody Gardot the person, contrary to just hearing her as a singer. For anyone looking for a fresh new voice in the world of music, give this a shot. You definitely owe it to yourself.

Many of the songs are very good, and I have recommended several to a friend who's a Sony exec. They, as a group, veer in the direction of co-dependency, but with a great producer and willingness to just sing some great, happy swing, this woman could be a modern "Miss Peggy Lee" and that would be a true delight! What Norah Jones and K. D. Lang have, Ms. Gardot has. I for one will look forward to hearing more. What about a Harold Arlen songbook? What about a "Miss Peggy Lee" songbook? "Is That All There Is?" should be on the charts again, don't you think?

Ever since I recieved this album my heart has no worries. Seriously, this is one of the best jazz albums of the last decade. Melody Gardot is on a par with Norah Jones and a host of other modern jazz singers with her unique phrasings of lyric and smooth fresh but classic 'melody's. This album is a keeper.

I heard the interview on NPR and fell in love with your voice! What a rare gift you have. I bought both your albums and can't wait for the next. Your songs are so honest and moving.

Four stars is a very high rating coming from me. To get 5 stars you have to be the young Maria Callas singing Norma, or Billie Holiday, or Edith Piaf in her prime. Melody has a perfect voice for jazz and blues. This is a very laid back blues-influenced jazz vocal album that is well worth buying. Melody's musicianship and obvious love for this music shine through in every note. I hope to hear much more from her in the future.

I heard Melody interviewed on BBC Radio 4's "Front Row" program a couple of weeks ago, with tracks from "Worrisome Heart" interspersed. The very first song I heard just blew me away and then I became totally engrossed by her personality and narrative. Her music is of that rare sort that makes you feel good to be alive. I hope to see her perform live sooner rather than later. Melody is wonderful – a unique and rare talent.

Melody Gardot is great! I saw her perform a few blocks from my house in Chesnut Hill (Philly), PA a few years ago. The CD I bought from her then only had a few tracks on it. So I just bought both of her CD's from cdbaby because her music is fabulous.

I heard Melody on a UK based digital radio station. She was the last guest before the station was closed as 'not profitable'! I'm so pleased I heard her. Such drive and focus in her life to overcome such difficulties. It has made me think. I love the track 'Worrisome Heart'

As soon as I heard Melody's voice on my XM radio, I knew I needed to hear more. I immediately looked her up and was pointed towards this site. Melody Gardot's voice is so silky and sexy that I guarantee that if you put on this CD for a quiet evening alone with your girlfriend, you won't be disappointed. And even though her lyrics are great, it wouldn't matter if she was singing Sesame Street songs... If you like jazz/folk or just strong female vocalists, you need to buy this CD.

  • Nothing less than great.
    author: Mats in Sweden

This is a really great cool and smooth jazzy music album from a very young and talented artist. I must admit that I first downloaded this album from the net and gave it a good listen through over and over again. I did awaken a must have feeling…. I just ordered it together with “Some Lessons -The Bedroom Sessions” .. I recommend you to do the same because it is seldom one comes across a rare flower like this. If you like the music from Norah Jones you are bound to love the music from Melody… Support this great talent and buy the album.

  • Blown Away
    author: vince signorotti

Hearing this CD for the first time reminded me of the first time I heard Norah Jones... I was blown away. She is a very talented singer-songwriter who compares favorably with many of her young musical contemporaries. I hope her talent translates into commercial success because she deserves it.
