notes
There's tons of music out there that never gets played on the radio. You can find it in clubs in places like Austin, at music festivals, and you can dig for it on the Internet. Michael Hearne and Friends Live at the Old Blinking Light is a great example of this music - real music played by real people with life and energy.
Mike and some of his friends play regularly at the Old Blinking Light in Taos, New Mexico. If you can make it there, do; or else you can buy this CD. The main players on this album are Mike Hearne, a singer/songwriter in the classic Texas style who happens to live in New Mexico, Jimmy Stadler, invariably referred to as "the dynamic Jimmy Stadler", a keyboard and mandolin player who adds spice to the record, and Kelly Stebbins, a waitress at the OBL who sings torch-style songs.
The evening's entertainment recorded on this CD covers a lot of ground musically, from bar songs and two-steps through blues and Cajun-infused tracks. The one thread running through the two-disc set is love of music and appreciation for a good song - whether it's one of Mike's original compositions or a song written by one of his extensive network of songwriter friends (Michael Martin Murphey, Shake Russell and Chuck Pyle among many others). It's all done with the highest quality of musicianship. Just as importantly, it's done with loyalty to the music, and with the energy that comes from playing to an enthusiastic audience. This is a great CD for a road trip.
(An explanation of the "explicit lyrics" notice is in order. At some point during the evening, one of the OBL patrons told Kelly Stebbins to "move her big ass." Some of her reactions are included in the recording.)

Estupendo
author: Luis LorenzoThis is the kind of playing/styling I miss these days. As we say over here in Spain, sencillo, directo y sin complicaciones. Belleza. Next time I'm in Taos I've got to be at the OBL...sure.

I felt like we were just sitting in someone's living room haveing a great ol' jam session. Love the friendly tone and of course the extra guitar picking' that was thrown in. This is definately in my "Road Trip, Traveling down the Highway" collection. It's a good one!
Mucho Bueno
author: Kelly MillerFantastic artist/songwriter. Have enjoyed your shows in Johnson City and with Davin in Houston.
Awesome
author: HeidiThis CD is a great collection that is true to the Michael Hearne sound that I love. Simple and deep. Everyone I've played it for has become a fan.
Nice work. Especially strong on the Peter Rowan "Midnight Moonlight" and "Utah
author: barryI got the cd for Utah Moon, which I love. I had some friends in Chicago who used to do it, and are out of print, and ran across Mr. Hearne's arrangement. Very nice, very tasty. Kudos and more kudos... Very tasty. I'm considering moving back to Colorado, just so I can run down into New Mexico for this music!
great cd
author: Brad Stronggreat work wish you would have included "new mexico rain" i worked with rod taylor at philmont in 96-97
Make sure you've made margaritas!
author: Kaity MacyFor those who can't make it to the OBL for Michael Hearne's infamous Monday nite performances, this CD will take you there. The energy and collaborative musical talents that bring the Taos crowds week after week and year after year have been captured LIVE. Whether you know these classics or not, this CD is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a kick in your step. Just wish it included Hotel California with Stadler!
Outstanding songs, excellent vocals, and great guitar work.
author: Bob in OklahomaThis is a CD packed full of great music that you will want to come back to many times. On first listen, the music comes across as a quality live recording of a great collection of stories and experiences set within a club atmosphere of patrons who clearly appreciate Michael Hearne's music. A second listen reveals Michael Hearne's clean, precise and tasteful guitar work that colors the tone throughout and puts this CD a cut above most others like it in this genre. I think this CD will still be worth listening to years from now.
