(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

Soulful Saxophone with southern roots. Jazz, soul/r&b, hip hop, and gospel influenced.

notes

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Michael grew up listening to his mother sing with the Mississippi Mass Choir and accompanying her at church on Sunday
mornings. His father was also a tenor saxophonist, and really influenced Michael's appreciation of 1960's and 70's soul music. At the same time, young Burton was building his own collection of hip hop and jazz recordings. These influences have had a profound effect on his approach to improvisation and composition.

Michael received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in jazz studies, from Indiana University, where he studied with David Baker.

Michael has performed with Young Jeezy, Timbaland, Keisha Cole, Kim Burrell, Robin Thicke, Dead Prez, Bone Crusher, Angie Stone, Janelle Monae, N' Dambi, Mary Mary, Kirk Whalum, Chuck Brown, Mike Phillips, Jeff Bradshaw, Freddie Jackson, Gloria Gaynor, Russell Gunn, Omar, Nick Colione, Marcus Johnson, Victor Goines, Byron Cage, the Mississippi Mass Choir, and a host of others.

Michael has recorded with Polow Da Don, Fergie, Hidden Beach Recordings "Unwrapped Volume 5.0," Ann Nesby "In The Spirit," PJ Morton "Emotions, special edition," Marcus Johnson "Just Doin What I Do," Alyson Williams "It's About Time," Bill Banfield "Striking Balance, and The Mississippi Mass Choir "Amazing Love," just to name a few.

He has also toured with Jill Scott, Anita Baker, Tyler Perry's "Madea Goes To Jail," Tyler Perry's "What's Done In The Dark," New Edition, Johnta Austin, Soul artist PJ Morton, and with Blues singer Willie Clayton. He played sax and keys for Tyler Perry's stage play "Why Did I Get Married." You can see (as well as hear) Michael play in the motion pictures, Tyler Perry's "The Family That Preys" and Tyler Perry's "Madea's Family Reunion." While he was touring with "Madea," Michael had the honor of playing behind Prince, Patti Labelle, Jennifer Holiday, and Chaka Khan.

Michael has appeared on The Tonight Show, Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel, TV One, and BET Jazz, performing on the popular show Studio Jams alongside pianist Bobby Lyle. Burton has also written and/ or produced songs for Alex Bugnon, Terrell Carter, Christian Keyes, Chandra Currelley, and Melvin Miller. Mike is currently touring with Mary J. Blige.

  • Real music is back!
    author: Jewel Mideau

This CD is Hott. It is so wonderful to have young people really bringing this back and in full bloom. Mike, keep doing your thing. Your music and your artistry is so intriguing, and such a joy to hear:-)

  • Catchy, easy on the ears(as jazz should be)
    author: Acey Cameron

This CD is a joy to listen to. When delving into the crisp sound and sharp notes I get that feeling I got when I first heard Grover Washington, Jr. Mr Burton is well polished beyond his years and the music he produces is a testament to that...

  • LIFE TRANSLATES INTO JAZZ...
    author: Derrick S. Slack

The CD put me in several moods, adding music to life in a very special way. IF feeling down there was a track to lift me up. Overwlemed, I could chill out and be inspired with "Questions" that give wonderful poetic answers to how I feel. When I am home sick "Southern Fried" bring Mama's home cooking, gospel feeling that energizes me to show warm hospitality to strangers. But my favorite is "A Song for Mrs. Paulk" I could hear the passionate words being musically spoken through the soul of this young man's sax....It made me want to meet the lady who name bears the song. Sojourn is an appropriate title for this masterpiece, because if forces one to travel inward to find passion, determination and home. By the way it forces you not by pulling, but by politely saying please...

  • Smooth Jazz with a melodious funk!
author: Henry E. Williams, Albany, Georgia

This is smooth jazz at its finest. It is hard to believe that this is the first C.D. from this young Artist. His smooth improvisations remind me of the great learned musicians such as Stanley Turentine, Herbie Hancock, Thelonius Monk and George Howard. He is definitely visionary and manifest seasonability beyond his years. He will only refine with time and ultimately emerge as a more polished musician. His brilliance exudes as it is now! That is the sole reason I did not give this C.D. a five stars rating.
