notes

There’s no doubt that Cherokee recording artist Michael Jacobs is a remarkable and creative musician. An amazing singer, his passionate delivery is impressive. He sings like he means it… because he does.

But Michael's skills as a songwriter - a painter with words and music - are what set him apart. His incredible blend of Native American and American “roots” music – a mixture of pop, rock, and folk - artfully fuses contemporary and traditional sounds and powerful imagery. His songs are the stories of life: of the past, present, and future - of beauty and pain, hope and heartache, and of love lost and love found.

Michael’s debut solo CD, Sacred Nation, received the 2003 Native American Music Award for Best Independent Recording. His remarkable follow-up recording, They Come Dancing, was nominated in 2004. JPoet of Native Peoples magazine writes, “Michael Jacobs has a big, raspy voice, one that often draws comparisons to Don Henley and he sings with an understated power that gives every lyric the ring of truth. There isn't a weak song on the album, and many sound like potential standards. ‘They Come Dancing’ is Jacobs' second album. Its power and polish lay the groundwork for other artists looking for ways to combine Native tradition and popular music without diminishing the power of either form.”

Michael’s a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. An accomplished musician and singer, writing great songs remains his sole desire and fuels his ambition.

  • They Come Dancing
    author: Jackie Jackson

I first heard Michael Jacobs at Indian Summer in 2007, his music blew me away. I bought the autographed CD and have played the title track over and over again. I have given this CD as gifts to friends. I want to get out of my chair and dance when I hear They Come Dancing.

Heard this artist sing "Welcome Home" at a Powwow. Incredible, my wife couldn't stop crying.Bought 1 copy, have ordered more as gifts, the whole album speaks to your soul. There is a song on it for everyone. The Creator has given him a great gift.

The first song is a song I play over and over, and love it totally. Some of the other songs don't hit me as hard, but they're still good. It was worth the buy, very original music with some nice thought provoking lyrics.

  • Pow wow-accent on the WOW
    author: Laureen Dozier

The whole CD is not strictly pow wow but the title cut “They Come Dancing” (pow wow-accent on the WOW) is powerful (I’m up & moving with my Cherokee shawl fringe swinging). Other favorites are “Welcome Home” (chills- good ones) & “Nanabush” (for all of us perfectly imperfect people). The great songwriting makes this music worth listening to again & again (I know I do)!

  • Very attractive and informative!

  • I love this CD!

This CD is awesome!!! It takes me to a place of worship with God and also keeps me in remembrance of the first nations culture and expression. It is a beautiful reminder that we each have a message and style to contribute to the body of Christ. I recommend this CD to anyone wanting to expand their boundaries and spritual experience.

  • Awesome

I found this CD by accident on this website, listened, bought it and it is now my most favorite of all my collection. Makes me proud to be American Indian. Keep it up, this is just simply wonderful.

I first saw MJ on stage at Milwaukee's Indian Summer Fest and had to stop and listen as he sang this song. It gave me goosebumps as the words and music alike were sent right to my soul. While I'm not Native American, I do try to walk the good red road and this song really made me want to dance. Also, the dancer on the cover, I've seen him many times and he sure does dance in prayer and the grace that you sing of. Inpiring. Awesome CD. I listen to it over and over again.

  • a friend asked me to listen ...
    author: Mitch Billington

A friend asked me to listen to a CD, and I wasn't too hopeful that it would be anything exceptional. I was surprised. The title track is catchy. Both the music and the vocals are quite good, and the message is uplifting, and eternally valuable. I had to purchase a copy for myself.

I love all the songs, the instrumental and the storytelling.

  • I can't believe I had to go all the way to Germany just to hear this!
    author: Karyn

I went all the way to Germany, and they put this cd on. It took my breath away. It gave me a feeling of being home and a sense of pride for my homeland, it touched my heart. Of all the things in Germany, I never thought this cd would have been one of the more memorable experiences. It's brilliant, why didn't someone think of putting the drums and the guitar together before, especially the first song, They Come Dancing. You're not expecting it, it catches you by surprise. Good stuff! Keep it coming!

  • They Come Dancing grabs your Spirit and won’t let go.
author: Ken Tankersley, Native American Studies, Northern Kentucky Unive

They Come Dancing is a mesmerizing, heartfelt, and Spirit-filled album. Anyone who has ever entered the circle, heard the drum, and felt the heartbeat will never forget the songs on this CD. The music is powerful and timeless. Once you hear the it, you will find yourself playing the CD over and over again. The album reminds us in a sacred way that we are all related. It is a celebration of All Our Relations.

This is the second time I have bought this CD, my first one got damaged and I just couldn't do without it. I love it so much that I play it over and over for hours sometimes.

  • Holy Sh*t!!!
    author: Ian P.

Ten Thousand Stars would do as a rating for this. "They Come Dancing" is enough to buy this album. Jacobs fuses the two worlds of rock and tribal music together beautiful and makes me jealous that I do not have Native American blood flowing through my veins!

    author: Randy Ingersoll, Gardiner, Montana

Driving through Yellowstone listening to "They Come Dancing," looking into the hills and imagining the ancient ones, then getting out, walking into the quiet forest, and singing these songs... Powerful powerful medicine. Thank you from the bottom of my drum-beating heart, Michael Jacobs.

  • Your CD rocks my soul!

  • Great native american rock music!!!
    author: Burt

Michael Jacobs They Come Dancing is a great cd for all who like mixture of acoustical rock and native american singing. Jacobs got excellent raspy hard rock voice. GOOOD!!!

  • author: Native Peoples magazine - Jul/Aug 2005

Jacobs has a big, raspy voice, one that often draws comparisons to Don Henley and he sings with an understated power that gives every lyric the ring of truth. There isn't a weak song on the album, and many sound like potential standards. The title track is a prayer for unity and an invitation to the dance of life that combines traditional singing and drumming with Jacobs' forceful acoustic guitar work. "Beauty Way" is a brief meditative piece that features Jacobs' cedar flute and confident guitar work. "Nanabush" has an anthem-like feel and uses the Ojibwe hero and trickster Nanabush to address the human capacity for great good and great foolishness. A spoken-word piece, "Creation Story," includes a subtle cedar flute soundtrack. It closes the album with a prayer that all beings can learn to live in harmony with each other and the Creator. "They Come Dancing" is Jacobs' second album. Its power and polish lay the groundwork for other artists looking for ways to combine Native tradition and popular music without diminishing the power of either form.

Michael Jacobs has redefined the American Songbook.

  • Native Pride in native music.
    author: Justin Crowfox Haner

This album is one of great talent. Great blend of traditional earth drums and guitar. Way to bring the music to our young warriors and ladies. New music for a new generation.

  • author: Tamara Turner, CD Baby

Traditional singing and circle drum bends seamlessly and naturally into rootsy folk rock for one of the most stunning, contemporary Native American rock albums to date. With his soul-penetrating mix of heartfelt tradition with bold current issues, concerns and musical influences such as Don Henley, Michael Jacobs has composed the most jaw-dropping, chilling and unforgettable melding of the powerful Native spirit with contemporary rock that I've heard in years.. maybe ever. I will passionately recommend this album over and over to anyone interested in contemporary Native music.
