notes
"Not for the open-minded!"
Such is the warning that graces the cover of DISLOCATED SONGS, the third compilation of Moes Haven songs released in 2004. What do they mean by that? I'm not sure, exactly. But it makes sense in a strange way. And it is certainly in keeping with Moes Haven's bizarre sense of humor.
This album features a song titled "How to Charge Up Your Cell Phone or Electric Razor (Or Anything Else, for that matter) When You're on the Road"? Enough said, I know. But I'm going to say more anyway.
In OUT WITH THE OLD, you were introduced to Moes Haven as heartfelt--if slightly subversive--balladeers. In MUSIC FOR THE FINAL MILLENNIUM, a darker, more morbid side of the boys was unveiled. Now, with DISLOCATED SONGS, we see what happens when Matt Farley and Tom Scalzo throw all caution to the wind and write whatever songs they feel like writing!
And what do you get? You get tributes to Hugh Grant, Larry Bird, Ashton Kutcher, Liz Phair and Diane Rehm, among other. You get songs about food sung by longtime friend of the band, the incomparable Kevin McGee. You get "Papaphobia" and "Fear of Rodents," songs about two of the least prevalent phobias on earth. And, sometimes, you get a song like "Amy (The Other Side)" and "Summer Song;" two songs that are just plain good.
Essentially, what Scalzo and Farley convey in this album is a sense of fun. They're not trying to change the world with this album. Rather, they're just having a grand old time. Moes Haven is a lot more than just a novelty act (and if you don't believe me, just check out their other albums). But they're also a pretty darn good novelty act when they choose to be. In DISLOCATED SONGS, they happily don the clothes of unapologetic entertainers. And they look amazing in 'em!
