notes
"This album is nowhere near as good as RAM."
So says Matt Farley, chief songwriter of Moes Haven. He goes on to say, "But it's as close as the three of us could get."
It also happens to be closer than many others have gotten. Not that I know of any bands who have consciously attempted to channel the muse of Sir Paul through an entire album.
That's right, Moes Haven loves Paul McCartney. In fact, Sir Paul was present during the recording of every track on this album - well, sort of:
"Farley took all of his McCartney records," says guitarist/songwriter Tom Scalzo, "and hung the covers up all around the studio while we were writing and recording this one. From time to time, we'd look at Paul's face and imagine what he'd think of these songs."
Chris Peterson, a part-time member of Moes Haven who took on full-time duties for this album, recounts similar experiences: "I'd be sitting there, trying to come up with more lyrics or another chord, and Farley would just be staring at me, urging me to hurry up and saying, 'Just ask yourself, what would Sir Paul do?' It was not always the most comfortable situation to work in. But the end result is good."
The end result is a collection of seventeen songs by three guys who LOVE Paul McCartney's 1971 album RAM. And they weren't even alive when it came out!
"I think that's why we're able to recognize how great it is," says Farley. "From what I've gathered, lots of people were down on Paul when he left the Beatles because he didn't seem to be tackling important issues as a solo musician, like John was. But from our point of view, Lennon's angry-young-man act seems a lot less authentic than Paul's approach."
So for all of you out there who aren't too uptight to appreciate a post-Beatles Paul McCartney album, SIR PAUL MADE RAM. WE MADE THIS. is for you! It's got 17 tracks that would make Sir Paul proud, including rockers like "Indifference" and "Come on Baby," quieter, acoustic tunes like "I Don't Know" and "Now I'll Conquer You," and some funny, quirky moments ("Love and Detroit II," "Country Romp").
"Sir Paul is a great entertainer," says Farley. "He's not above or below any style of music. He can go from an emotional rocker to a corny vaudeville-style song to a beautiful piano ballad. That's the spirit we were hoping for when we put this album together. And I think we did it."
They did.
