Biography:
Monica first began writing music in 1998, as a response to the death of a family member. She made the decision to record a cassette of her songs and turned to producer Olaf Pyttlik to work on the recording. The project soon evolved into the experience of writing and recording her first CD, ‘The Expectation of Home’. Five years later, Monica has shared the stage with Jane Siberry, the Cowboy Junkies and Kathleen Edwards, and has played at SXSW, Canadian Music Week & Prairie Music Week. She has been featured nationally in magazines like Billboard & Maclean's and been played on radio stations across North America, including the CBC, XM radio and on the National Public Radio show “All Things Considered”,
Moving from dynamic, full-bodied pop songs to haunting guitar/voice numbers, both of Monica's albums have been released on her own label, Night Sky Records. Her recordings seek to blend her acoustic performance style with an electronic edge, while maintaining those qualities that draw people to her music – a beautiful voice and the ability to communicate on an emotional level with her audience through her songs. Lyrically, Monica writes honest explorations of comfort and hope, while trying to convey the difficulty in believing that these things can be found. Working again with producer Olaf Pyttlik, her new CD, 'Orbit'(cdbaby.com/monicaschroeder2, continues to delve into the universal themes of love, loss and the beauty of a sad song.
"Featuring one of the most spellbinding voices to grace Canadian music ... her acclaimed, independently released debut, 'The Expectation of Home', is a true gem. This Manitoba singer/songwriter is Canada's finest undiscovered artist."
-- Larry LeBlanc, Billboard Magazine
"Monica has a beautiful voice - emotive, fluid and clear. This Manitoba-based pop musician could make the white pages sound like Yeats."
-- Now Magazine
"Monica's amazing ... She first sang longing and Margo and I just looked at each other. We both realized she's real. I'm excited when you hear somebody outstanding like that."
-- Michael Timmons (Cowboy Junkies)
Reviews for 'the expectation of home'...
"The disc knocked me out. Schroeder's songs remind me a bit of fellow-Canadian Jann Arden, but the production of the record, with its drum loops and hints of electronica mingled subtly under occasionally muscular guitar work, surprised me with its progressive undercurrent, reminding me a bit of William Orbit's production of Beth Orton's first record."
-- Prism Magazine
"Folk music with an alternative beat. That's how I would classify Monica Schroeder, although I suspect most would dispel the folk part of this Winnipeg singer's work. You may not have heard of this lady, but for goodness sake run out and look for her release 'the expectation of home'. This lady has found a place in the shadows, has made it her home and invites the listener to join her there for a time. Simply put, this CD takes you places we must all visit on occasion, and when you're lead by this lady's voice, you welcome the trip."

Absolutely amazing! Monica's haunting voice kept me spellbound from one song to the next. This collection of songs left me feeling that she truly bared her soul and allowed me to experience her love, her pain, and her attempt to overcome it all. I hope to be hearing more from Monica in the near future.
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE VOICE!!!
author: BCPThis is one of those rare instances for me where a CD grabs me right out of the wrapper. I have listened to it about every day for the past two weeks. Beautiful music and a magical voice. What more can you ask for?
Very slow and sweet
author: CharlieThe melodies are not as creative as I would love them to be because I am a real sucker for Monica´s voice. And though I prefer acoustic music I like her songs with some electronic background most. They are extremely pretty, especially "Something beautiful". But in some other songs I miss the power or the magic that makes me want to listen all over again. All in all I would always buy this CD again.
wow!
author: maggiemoonExcellent, excellent CD. It's been in my cd player for the past week and I'm still not ready to take it out. Monica has a beautiful & haunting female voice. This is going to be one of those albums that I will find myself craving. I'm glad she took a chance on recording it & I really hope she works on some more!
Amazing, grabs your heart for a rollercoster of emotion!
author: Alan WynnePassion and power, amazing lyrics that hook you in and play your head and heart, superb!
This CD is addictive, absolutely incredible, truly hypnotic.
author: Lena FeldmanThis is one of the best CDs I've ever listened to, a true work of art! It is very beautiful, and extraordinarily moving. There is so much intensity combined with an unreal amount of tranquility. This is an extremely diverse CD. It captivates, touches your soul, and is nothing less than an inspiration.
Outstanding voice, a real musician
author: Guy ArcherMonica has an incredible voice. Almost angelic. The writing, music and lyrics, are solid. It's a shame that someone with a voice and writing ability such as this hasn't made it big.
Haunting and Powerful
author: TraciI bought this CD on a whim not sure if I would like it. I received it a few weeks ago and it has not come out of my cd player. She has a voice you can't get out of your head, powerful and real lyrics and the music flows perfectly. This CD can fill your emptiness when you are feeling down. Something beautiful you must have.
Love it!
author: HeatherThis is an excellent cd! I bought it because of the similarity to Sara Maclachlan but she definetely has her own unique style. Every song is quality and this has quickly become one of my faves in my collection! Can't wait for more.
haunting and lovely
author: JLLeeI, like others, saw immediate parallels to Sarah Maclachlan when I first heard this CD. I listened to it to while studying, but found myself so caught up in her lyrics and the sound that I was too distracted! I was suprised by the slight electronic edge to the production, and also suprised that I was not deterred by it. Her voice is something special, and I do not anticipate tiring of this CD anytime soon.

Soft and soothing to the soul
author: Heather SheardownI love Monica's CD - her voice reaches into your soul and comforts and soothes it of all it's woes. I have shared it with friends and they've gone and bought their own copies.
