“One of the best debut CDs of 2007 has to be Myoshi Marilla’s “The EP”, a five-song set of instrument-laden, classic-meets-modern music, perfectly complimented by Myoshi’s lush, jazzy vocals.
The New York-based singer/songwriter's entire CD was recorded live, which accounts for its wonderfully classic, big band sound.
The sweetly sentimental grooves “Smile” and “Hello” are sure to be favorites on the disc, while the rocking energy and emotion of “How Does It Feel” and bare bliss of “Angel” show Myoshi’s versatility and depth as an artist.”

Myoshi:The EP. A mixture of jazz ("Hello"), old school soul ("Angel") and a jazz/rock fusion ("Smile," "How Does It Feel"), the disc shows a versatile young artist finding her sound. Myoshi occasionally has a light, playful voice, but shows she can also be belt it out on cuts such as the disc's best number, the midtempo "Livin For Me." She elected to record the album "live," and it was a wise move. The album has an immediate feel to it and the band -- consisting of trumpeter Kevin Louis, trombonist Dion Tucker, guitarist Charmel Rogers, keyboardist Burny Pelsmajer, bassist Nate Jones and drummer Jeremy Clemons - is solid, if occasionally overpowering. And her mostly self-penned material is melodic and well structured.
Myoshi: The EP isn't perfect, but effectively shows a creative, out-of-the-ordinary artist growing in her craft, and gives listeners - many of whom know of her as a TV host - a tasty introduction to Myoshi Marilla, the singer. We're looking forward to hearing more.

“Rock, funk, jazz, and a seductive serving of soaring soul. That's the vibe of Myoshi Marilla, and that's the marvelous merge you'll experience when you check out her brilliant debut EP.
Myoshi's vocals are powerful without being overpowering, and gentle without being innocuous. Her organic production approach emphasizes musicianship and 70s-style band interplay, and the combo of her top notch cats along with her dynamic song-belting chops makes for a marvelous tandem indeed.
Dig this chick. She's on the upswing, and her music will please your mind, feet, and ears.”

/// THE CD ///
For her cd debut, Myoshi has teamed up with two phenomenal musicians, Kevin Louis (trumpet) and Dion Tucker (trombone). The three of them together have created a funky, jazzy, rock infused sound sprinkled with a little latin, a little drum and bass, a little whatever feels good at the moment. "I write all the lyrics and the melodies and take it to the guys. We sit down in front of Kev's Rhodes, I sing it through, and see what they come up with. Sometimes I need a chord changed or want to change the flow of the song. They get what I'm trying to say right away. I couldn't have asked for two better musicians to collaborate with."
The five song EP was recorded live. "I wanted to record in an all live environment because I want the music to have the energy and vibe of a live performance. I want it to be very organic." The cd, Myoshi: The EP, was independently released January 30, 2007.

/// BIO ///
Myoshi Marilla is a singer. She is a songwriter. She is an actress and a tv host. She wears many hats but music was the thing that started it all off for her. Music is her first love.
Growing up in a musical family, Myoshi has been in love with music for as long as she can remember. Like many African American children, she started singing in the church choir at a very young age. Ballet and gymnastics classes combined with piano lessons helped nurture her natural talent. In school, she was always active in the choir and theatre arts. Myoshi got her first professional singing job while still in high school. She auditioned for and landed a featured role singing and dancing in a show at Busch Gardens theme park in Williamsburg, Virginia where she worked opposite Taye Diggs. In addition to working there for two seasons, she became lead singer for a show band based in Virginia.
Myoshi was offered the lead in a brand new show going into the Hilton International Hotel in Tokyo. The show ran for four months and Myoshi left Japan with a job offer to star in a show in Atlantic City. Myoshi, a classically trained singer, has performed alongside some of Broadway's hottest stars. Over the years, she has performed in shows throughout the United States and abroad. She has had the pleasure of singing at a star-studded event for the King of Morocco at his palace in Marrakech, Morocco. She even got to dance with Sean Connery! She has also performed for Robert DeNiro and his wife at a party at their home. From Lake Tahoe to New Zealand and numerous places in between, Myoshi has traveled the globe doing what she loves to do - SING!
She has now added television host to her resume. Myoshi just wrapped up two seasons as the co-host of The BETJ List on the BETJ network. Myoshi, along with her co-host Maven Huffman (WWE wrestler, VH1 Surreal Life), presented a weekly two-hour countdown of the Top 10 Neo Soul and R&B hits featuring artist and celebrity interviews. There was an additional Top 10 list focusing on pop culture and lifestyle in New York City and the world. She had the opportunity to interview people such as Tyson Beckford, The Brand New Heavies, Aaron Neville, and many others. She also introduced many new musical acts in a nationwide forum for the first time.
In addition to writing and performing her own music, Myoshi continues to pursue opportunities in acting and television. She has appeared in various commercials, in a featured role on the Court TV show Parco, P.I., and she can be seen in a milk promo on the Oxygen Network. She currently lives in New York City.

Amazing.
author: DarylA fantastic fusion of tough funk, killer rock, bumpin' jazz, and easy soul, MYOSHI MARILLA's "Myoshi: The EP" is the perfect blend of genres; a cross-cultural gut-buster that burns your feet and tickles your hips. This is an album that warms your heart, strengthens your spirit, and allows you to truly appreciate the great qualities of great music. Pick up MYOSHI MARILLA's "The EP"--there is more to this chick than just a pretty face, and there is more to her voice than just the sound.
Timeless, inspiring and much needed!
author: Israel MurrayMyoshi Marilla is more than just another pretty face! I purchased The EP not because she was the host of BET's JList, but because she gives new life to Soul music. She's not in it for the money (for the heart is rich with the possibility of prosperity when doing what it loves the most) and her soul just pours over the mic. There are many artists that make you yearn for their live show. Myoshi will make you beg for hers!

Slinky, Sultry, Electric, Timeless, Original
author: Dazjae, Purple MagazineMyoshi graces the microphone with a smooth, smoldering presence. The energy is eclectic, but timeless. The lyrics are witty, and well-considered. Her voice is lovely. One looks forward to seeing her live.
Myoshi has such a melodic soulful voice; great jazz blend.
author: Sherry Sneed-DykesI so enjoyed this CD and I anxiously await the next. Ms. Marilla's voice along with the jazz group was soulful and smooth and I continually play this CD as I travel to work and home.
Music To My Soul
author: Walter Jackson,Jr.This is indeed a breathe of fresh air! Myoshi delivers a feel good project that will put a "Smile" on anyone's face. She truly has a voice of an "Angel"!
Exquisite, soulful singer!
author: akiey (akiey5media)It only takes a few listens to her soulful sound and style to realize that Myoshi is undeniably one among a handful of truly gifted singers-performers with a gift of working her ballads into the music to create a rhythmic chef d'oeuvre. Looking forward to more magic from her.
Myoshi has a voice of an angel...
author: Sean LenardI haven't listened to such smooth jazz and voical mixture in quite sometime. What is also a rewarding about Myoshi is that she gives each listener a personal touch of elegance with every note that flows out her mouth. The band is wonderful each note played should be placed in history to be listened to for centuries from now. I love this cd and I know you will too. Love you Myoshi keep singing...I will keep buying. God's feather, Sean

After listening to the cd over and over there is only one word to describe it "Awesome". The vocals are excellent and the live instrumentation is an added plus. If you like live instruments you will love this ep. I Want More.
Musical Dream
author: EzzenceAs you listen to the angelic voice of Myoshi, you are swept away into a musical dream filled with trumpet sounds, trombone beats, and melodies of energy. Myoshi is the epitome of "real" music. I am anticipating her release of her full LP. Good music is still here...
Short and ABSOLUTELY Sweet
author: ProverbHonestly, my only issue with this cd is that I keep changing my favorite song. All of the songs have energy but that last song is powerful with the guitars and the rock feel. The lyrics are vivid and strong, the singing is soooo powerful and the rhythm is always moving to keep you interested. There is a sense of cohesiveness with the singer and the band that I really felt. If you like the jazz-influenced fusion sound of the Brand New Heavies, Jill Scott, or Ledisi then you will love this cd.
Truly amazing, talent personified...! You have to get it!
author: Frank (London, UK)Amongst the saturation of the music industry today, it is extremely difficult to designate anyone with the title of "Real Artist" Until now. From the warmth of Myoshi's voice to the jazzy, soulful infusion of original beats, this CD is a real winner and instant classic! And to quote the title of the first track, it makes you do exactly that....'smile' You won't be disappointed..=)
