Take a baby-grand piano, add a hauntingly beautiful voice highlighted by the occasional shimmering vocal harmony, and you get the soothingly simple 'Essence'.

Feeling inspired one morning, Natasha hopped a plane to Los Angeles with her Manitoba Film & Sound-sponsored demo in hand. Within a year she was chosen for the UCLA Lionel Richie Scholarship in Songwriting. "I loved LA but I felt a little lost in the sea of musicians/models/actors. I was living in a garage and could hardly afford to eat, nevermind record music and work the scene. So I came home to Canada to get closer to myself and not be influenced by that whole craziness."

The result of this soul-searching is the stark and beautiful 'Essence' -which was written and produced by Natasha with accompaniment by Winnipeg pianist Rick Boughton. They recorded the project on an 8-track in each other's living rooms in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

With a baby-grand piano as backdrop and Natasha's voice highlighted by the occasional shimmering vocal melody, 'Essence' is unapologetic in its simplicity.

"It could be called Zen and the art of songwriting" says Natasha, "and that's what I wanted because this album is about cutting out the bullshit & finding my voice as an artist.'

    Natasha is magnificent. There is something vulnerable and fortright about her songs. It's Pure and You are perfect examples. Add the brilliant piano playing and this record really draws a wide range of emotions out of the listener. Completely and The Only are both sensual and intimate. For Louise is a quiet little instrumental while Star Machine and Would You Believe create a mesmorizing atmosphere. I can't say enough about this album, it flows seamlessly from beginning to end. Natasha's voice is as beautiful as her lyrics are meaningful.

    This album is gorgeous as "a thousand leaf lotus baring her naked soul." That is just one of the poetic zingers you'll find yourself doing double takes at while listening to Natasha's album Essence. To choose a favorite song on Essence is impossible, yesterday I thought it was track 3, today I think it's Star Machine. It's so beautiful, and I'm being very serious here, that I would want Star Machine played at my funeral. That probably sounds weird, but it's a compliment, Natasha. I ordered a copy of this for my friend in New York, she's going to love this. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. I hate to actually compaire this music to anyone else's because it really is original and one of a kind. However, I think Tori Amos, Jewel, Sara Mclachlan...well, I think they have one for the sisterhood here. This is shimmering with poetry and "diamond dust."

    Essence is an essential album for fans of Tori Amos and early Jewel. It's beautiful. The track Over the Rockies has been played over and over in my home. I love it. Natasha is beautiful inside and out, and this CD proves it.

    The only thing i can say about the music this wonderful girl makes is... Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leafs a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. Alfred R. Ferguson Himself would weep are her Brilliance.
