The first three tracks feature the New Guitar Summit performing a Count Basie classic, a Charlie Christian signature tune and an original Duke Robillard blues. Mynah For McDounough is an acoustic duet between Gerry and Duke dedicated to guitar pioneer, Dick Mcdounough. The rest of the recording is tracks from each of the three guitarists individual recording careers. These tracks feature many great musicians from the jazz and blues world including Scott Hamilton, Bucky Pizzarelli, David Grisman and Magic Dick from the J.Geils Band. The title, Retrospective, can be taken three ways. One is a look back at the multi styles of jazz guitar as well as a look at what these three fine guitarists have done in their careers as well a look at what they intend to do together and in the future. Their use of three guitar harmonies in the big band style and the stacking of chords in the rhythm parts set them apart from other guitar groups. The addition of Gerry Beaudoin playing 7-string guitar gives them a whole different tonal palette to work with. Three accomplished guitarists, three different styles of playing, one tremendous display of digital dexterity. Jay Geils, Duke Robillard and Gerry Beaudoin -- collectively known as the New Guitar Summit -- played Thursday night at the Barns at Wolf Trap, and what emerged through the blistering mix of jazz and blues chords was a sense of enlightened enjoyment, for the artists as well as the audience.
Dressed in spiffy suits and ties, and superbly accompanied by John Turner on double bass and Gordon Grottenthaler on drums, the trio sat on chairs with their electric guitars in their laps and proceeded to play the living daylights out of them. When one player soloed, the other two strummed different, yet complementary, guitar rhythms on compositions popularized by, among others, the Benny Goodman Sextet ("Seven Come Eleven," "Flying Home"), Billie Holiday ("Ain't Nobody's Business") and themselves.
Blues icon Robillard provided the dynamic center for the action, flanked by jazz and swing aficionado Beaudoin and former rock star Geils. Each player continued to set -- and exceed -- standards with each turn at bat.
And so it went for two hours, with the wrenching, arching solos crossing the stage. The showcase was not lost on the audience; there were more interruptions by applause than during a State of the Union speech.
Late in the set someone jokingly requested "Love Stinks," a pop anthem that was a hit for Geils' 1970s rock ensemble, the J. Geils Band. "It sure does," was his droll reply, signaling that nothing as elemental as that ditty was going to find its way into this performance.

  • Guitar masters hoe down in the jump era

    I found this collaboration album after following Jay Geils' fantastic retro trip from Bluestime to a solo jazz career...teamed up here with a jazz guitarist of renown and a blues guitar slinger, Jay and company jump, swing and bounce in that short arcane era of jazz-jump-blues and early R&B that Louis Prima, Tiny Bradshaw, Roy Brown and King Biscuit Time epitomized. Redone in the same warm retro tones by modern guitar technicians, this is a must have album for jazzers and Blues-o-holics alike. BTW: New Guitar Summit are so tight and accurate in their retro sound that Randy Bachman has used them as a backing band in an album of original jazz tunes he wrote inspired by his work with Lenny Breau.

    This album is featuring three clever guitarists, and guitarplaying is exactly what it's all about. But in a tastefull way. Often when masters of the same instrument work together, it ends up in a question of who's winning. Not this time! Theese fellows knows how to work together and give eachother some space. Besides the guitarplaing there are also great performances from other instruments. On "Exactly Like You" the sax and piano steals the show. "Just Among Freinds" shows thrue stardom of bass and clarinet. They all seem - as fare as I can hear - to have had a good time making this album. They know how to pick tunes, too. A fine collection of beloved standards shows the good taste of the musicians, and bring joyfull pleasures to the listener. It's swinging, it's thrilling, it's ringing, and all the way through with a sparkling smile in the eye. A lot of delivery from theese chaps. A must for lovers of guitar-jazz, with a drive and overvueability that makes it a good place for rockfans to start.

    1 o'clock in the morning (UK time), Life is good, the party is in full swing and this album is "Classy", a compilation of jazz/blues standards and individual expertise of the highest order. This music is "ambiance" personified...It has made my night, go buy it in bucketfuls....

    When I bought this CD at a live gig of the New Guitar Summit little did I know that the party would continue. This is some of the best three guitarists that I have ever heard. I know Jay , Gerry and Duke from years of listening to their music, and as a friend as well as a fan I recommend it highly. When did you ever get a rock, blues and jazz guitarist to make a CD like this together and have it come out this way. This is a great Cd and I love it. If you want great jazz and blues guitar this is it. --

    This CD is full of fun, swinging guitar that comes from a place where jazz, swing and blues live happily together. That is evident simply by the presence of the three frontmen. Gerry Beaudoin is known to the jazz guitar community and is active in the Benedetto Players concerts. Jay Geils may be best known from the blues-rock band he fronted in the 70s, but is more than competent in this idiom. Duke Robillard bridges the gap between the classic blues of T-Bone Walker (check out his excellent video)and the swing of Charlie Christian.
