Four people from distinctly different backgrounds, Not to Reason Why came together much in the same way a riot evolves. A determined group of people whose good intentions soon morph into something much more. Utilizing a variety of different backgrounds, this foursome represents a fully loaded arsenal. Not To Reason Why lures their audience into a relaxed malaise with pleasant piano riffs and encapsulates their souls with heavy rhythmic articulation and soaring guitar lines with some of the most intense post-rock stylings this side of Japan. This powerful quartet does not just captivate an audience, they clasp their very souls in a vice-like grip. When listening to Not To Reason Why’s “Who Wants Flowers When They’re Dead?” be prepared for utter destruction, but always hold the knowledge that soon you will be rebuilt close to your heart. For thirty one minutes, there is no outside world, you are at the liberating mercy of four extremely talented musicians you have likely never met before. It is this surrender and the following intense existential experience that makes this EP by Not To Reason Why a must have. Music, performed in this manner, represents more than just melodic sound. It is pure artistic expression, well worth checking out.

"Not to Reason Why hail from California. I can tell you all about their EP, Who Wants Flowers When They’re Dead?. A rather ambiguous title (do they mean dead flowers or dead folks?) fitting for a band that consciously genre hop. The group seem to be fond of clear cut timing, but instead of taking the usual Don Caballero/Battles route and channeling this into a creation of math-rock intensity, they slow things down and instead create an EP that effortlessly weaves between instruments and styles. Ample examples of this are the tracks “Mightiest Monster In All Creation Ravaging A Universe For Love” and “1.21 JiggaWatts!?” with the latter including pulsing melodic piano repetition which provides the backdrop for Explosions in The Sky-esque guitar reverb. Although this EP does draw upon the staples of instrumental rock, it also packs in plenty of unique moments, such as the rather ineffable (basically, problematic for me to describe) drums that crash and soar throughout the record; in short, the percussion is along the lines of the drumming of Hangedup, if it were a little bassier and less claustrophobic. Moving between moments of ambience and clattering reverb-heavy climaxes, the quartet have created an EP that packs quite a punch. With six tracks totaling in at 30 minutes, the EP contains a fair amount of material to work through, and although a sizable portion of it seems to be a nod to the usual names within instrumental music, there is enough here to suggest that Not to Reason Why may provide us with something more imaginative next time around."

  • Beautiful Instrumental Post-Rock

    Not To Reason Why is one of the most promising bands in post-rock. They're similar to a lot of the greats of the genre, but they also have their own style. Parts of this EP sound a lot like Explosions In The Sky. The band manages to be heavy and beautiful at the same time, which is a rare feat. They also have some unique song titles. "1.21 Jiggawatts!?" is a lot more beautiful and serious sounding than you would expect a song named after a "Back To The Future" reference to be. "Mightiest Monster" and "Submitted For The Approval" are my two other favorites. The final track is a little repetitive, but beautiful nonetheless. This is a great addition to any post-rock collection. It's beautiful music that conjures up images of faraway landscapes, even though the band is from San Francisco.
