After years of anticipation from fans dating back to the early '90s, Omega Johnson comes forth with his solo debut, The Blackbird. As the frontman for the classic NYC underground group Mhorlocks, OJ tore through the New York scene with consistently innovative lyrics, and the Mhorlock tradition continues here.

With production by Dok Who?! and Cenzi Stiles, and a guest appearance from family member Mr. Man of Bush Babees, Omega brings forth the missing link in hip-hop -- the hardcore and soulful witticisms reminiscent of EPMD, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, and other greats of the eras from which OJ has clearly drawn his influences.

    This cd was amazing. I do believe that omega threatens to energize a growing far-right movement and will push other artists to make more profound rap albums and to imitate his style.

    Descending from Jamaica, West Indies, and hailing from the Jamaica section of Queens, New York, Omega "OJ" Johnson (who has also been known as Dok Who?!) is a powerful lyricist who has been a part of hip-hop culture since the early 1980s. But since we are on Spitkickers,.. some people also know him by his Spitkicker Message Board name OJ from the Bronco. OJ has been writing and producing rap music for close to twenty years, basing his music mostly on composition while acknowledging hip-hop's sampling roots. The album the Blackbird left me with a bit of mixed feelings, I'll explain why. The lyrics and the delivery is top-notch, OJ has definitely got something to say and he knows how to bring it to you. On songs like "Rock of Ages", "Lonely Soldier", "Dark Matter" (featuring mr. Man of Bush Babees fame) and the great throwback joint "Flashbacks" OJ really forces you to listen to his words, and dope delivery. What also surprised me was that OJ doesnt curse at all!! Really, it's refreshing to hear a hiphop record that if you would censor it, would sound (nearly) the same! Props for that mr. OJ! The credited producer "DOK WHO?!" who did almost all the tracks (there is a Cenzi Styles remix on the album too) left me with the mixed feelings I mentioned earlier. The beats on the album, with Dark Matter exlcuded all didn't really have "the Nod Factor" if you know what I'm saying. I really feel that OJ would be albe to catch more ears when his beats would knock harder. Like I said before, there are really, really good songs on this album, but for me it's more a lyrical thing, tho I must admit that OJ can really spit as well. At the end of the day I all comes down to personal taste of course and it could be that the eclectic sounding soundscapes that OJ uses just don't work for me but do work for other peeps.
