notes

OSCAR is an acoustic duo from New Zealand, featuring the warm rich vocals of Kim Ward, and the acoustic guitar of Tim Cooper. Tim & Kim met at a jam night in Tauranga in late 2002. They liked similar music and have been playing together as OSCAR since.

Their debut album, 'RAW' (recorded at 'The Warmerer studio', Pongakawa, N.Z.), consists of fourteen popular covers. This is an example of exactly what OSCAR do live.

Kim Ward is a singer/songwriter who released an original album in 2004, entitled 'Outside my square', also here at Cd baby. This was supported by some well respected local musicians as well as U.K guitarist and film maker POM. (www.lost-contact.com).
Her history has consisted of several Jazz festivals around the North Island of New Zealand. Kim is currently focusing on writing and recording new material.

Tim Cooper has played professionally for the past fifteen years. Prior to moving back to Tauranga in 2001, he played in Australia for ten years (mostly with another kiwi artist- Carla Werner). Tim has just finished 2 years study at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic doing a diploma in music production & performance, and is currently working on several new projects.

  • Raw by OSCAR
    author: Nyree Sherlock

Recently, as I rushed along Tauranga’s Grey Street, Andy from Jim’s Music Room, stepped out at me, disc in hand, and said “Try this!” I forgot about the cd until Sunday, when I was still shuffling around the house in a somnambulant daze. However, as it turns out, RAW was just what I needed: delicious, delicate and understated acoustic guitar accompanied by edgy, bluesy vocals. The duet featured on this little charmer is OSCAR: Kim Ward on vocals; Tim Cooper on acoustic guitar. Recorded at Brian and Tracie de jong’s fabulous ‘Warmerer Studio’ (pongakawa), part of this album feature the natural background sounds of a raging storm that took place during the recording. This does not detract from the beauty of RAW, but merely emphasizes the fact that this unadorned, undubbed recording encapsulates OSCAR’s authentic talent. The fourteen tracks on the cd are all covers of well-known tracks, but before you look at the track listing and notice yet another version of ‘Summertime’, ‘Autumn leaves’, or ‘Fields of gold’, listen to OSCAR’s version of these well-loved songs within the context of the album. I found RAW absolutely enjoyable; all at once calm, comforting and uncluttered, it also permeates a bluesy nonchalance.

One of the most enjoyable things that popped through the door recently was the debut album from OSCAR, the local folk/jazz duo featuring the voice of Kim Ward and acoustic guitar of Tim Cooper, which goes under the title "Raw". Recorded at Brian and Tracie de Jong's home studio in Pongakawa, this is a very good record of exactly what OSCAR does when they play around town, just Tim's guitar (live, with no over-dubs) and Kim's absorbing singing. The only addition is the odd smattering of harmonies added by Kim. I call this folk jazz, but I don't really like that handle. It's more pop songs and the odd jazz tune-'Summertime', 'Autumn leaves', played acoustically with a jazzy inflection. Does that make it folk/jazz? Not really, but it's not really 'Jazz' jazz, if you know what I mean, and it's really not folk music...easy listening folk/pop/jazz? I hate labels. But, whatever you call it, it really is rather lovely. This is very much candlelit dinner music and OSCAR keep it smooth and delicate. Tim is a very underated guitarist, though only by people who haven't heard him, and his backing is intricate and subtle. Kim keeps her vocals at a beautifully intimate level, letting the sound of her voice and phrasing shine. This sort of setting is an absolute test for musicians, since the music is so sparse and clean - there is nothing to hide behind - and OSCAR pass with flying colours. The material will possible be a little familiar to fans of Tuck and Patti, and Eva Cassidy, but even then there is much to enjoy here, and the actual sound on the cd is fantasic, with his previous work on Tracie de Jong's and The Self Righteous Brothers albums Brian is really becoming the local expert in recording acoustic music.

  • One guitar one voice

Tim Cooper's renowned acoustic delights, blended with the soul-moving voice of Kim Ward makes for a rich beautiful, captivating album, rich in dynamics and feel. Each track is an orginal twist on a well chosen cover and the sound is indeed raw, as the title suggests. With only one acoustic guitar and one vocalist, the duo is one of the few who do it well - leaving us with something pure and simple. If you have heard OSCAR play at the Montana Jazz festival '05 or at Mills Reef, you probably want to get your hands on a copy (you can't have mine!) So get in quick before they are all gone!
