notes
I grew up during the '50's playing ball in the schoolyards of Washington Heights and Inwood in Upper Manhattan, New York City. As a senior varsity left-hander at George Washington High School, I faced Ed Kranepool who became first baseman for the New York Mets a year or two later. He hit a high fly to right that SHOULD have been caught.
In the '60's, I learned to play guitar and was influenced by The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary and, of course, Dylan. During this time and into the early '70's I played individually and with folk groups in Greenwich Village, (e.g., the Bitter End) and many of the local neighborhood Irish Bars. "Reunion" (track #1) attempts to recapture those memorable days on planet earth.
In the '70's and '80's I devoted myself to raising my family, writing songs and fishing for small mouth bass--whenever possible; "Still Hurts" (track #2) was inspired by this worthy bronze-backed adversary. And speaking of raising a family, the children's song "Have You Noticed?" (track #11) was an attempt to present the possibilities of imagination to my staunchly realistic and ultra conservative 6-year-old daughter, Beth.
In 1992, with Tom Seaver's induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, I felt compelled to write my first sports song, "#41". The NEW JERSEY RECORD wrote a feature article about the tune. The cassette was then archived in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In 1994 came a song that has gotten me some attention, "The Ballad of the '69 Mets" (track #13) commemorated the 25th Anniversary of the "Miracle Mets" World Championship. The song was set to video by the New York Mets and presented on Diamond Vision at Shea Stadium in July 1994 and then again in 1999 for the 30th Anniversary. This was followed by a feature on Fox Sports Net and WFAN Sports Radio.
The event in my life that had a profound impact on me was the passing of my brother-in-law, Frankie. The album is dedicated to him. "The Fighter Inside" (track #7) is my way of making sure that he is not forgotten. WFDU Radio is playing the song, which many people have said not only touches them personally with their losses but also relates to the tragic times we face today.
The four artists I chose for this album are accomplished and extremely talented. Christian Ebner, ("Reunion", track #1; "Have You Noticed?", track #11, and tracks 2,6,and 8) is a consummate professional vocalist. He has done studio work for EMI Publishing, Warner/Chapell Music, the legendary David Foster, and has performed on Don Henley's "Inside Job" album. Eddie Elliott ("The Fighter Inside", track #7; and tracks 4,5,9,10 and 12), is a folk rocker who does about 100 dates a year touring from the West to the East Coast. His Dylan-like phrasing is a great fit for these songs and he is on the verge of a successful musical career.
Teresa James ("Danglin' Over Fire", track #3). Her voice is strong and expressive, a real "in your face" style, and I'm really glad she came along to do this song. Her impressive credits include performing live with artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Pat Benatar, Levon Helm of THE BAND, and Delbert McClinton. Danny Quinn, ("Miracle Drive: The Ballad of the '69 Mets", track #13) is a veteran folk singer and has performed all across the country. He's appeared with artists such as Tommy Makem, Tom Chapin, the Clancy Brothers and Peter Yarrow.
Completing this project was a goal that came to fruition over a period of years. It reflects the times of my life that spanned the '50's through the '90's. Like many other songwriters, I had sent individual tunes to publishers and record companies, but finally decided that an album of personal experiences-the events and people that effected me was what would be important and fulfilling.
