notes

Poppermost is a 60's & 70's style "new-retro" alternative pop/rock music band based in Las Vegas NV USA, the "Entertainment, Wedding, and Trade Show/Convention Capital of the World."

What started off as a way for two Las Vegas musicians to make a living as a cover band ended up as Poppermost, an alternative pop/rock band whose original music speaks volumes of past heroes, while pointing to the future of pop/rock. Poppermost is a 60's & 70's-style alternative pop/rock band based in Las Vegas NV USA that was formed in July 2001 by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Alex Oliver, along with bassist Roy Al Rendahl, who also provides the audio and visual artistry for the band,

Even though Poppermost has their ow n sound, you can hear the influences of artists like the Beatles, R.E.M., The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, and Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green and Lindsey Buckingham in their songs. They yearn for a time when "the music really mattered," and wasn't about "fa shion and hundred dollar T-shirts."

The diversity and quality of their music brings varied reactions from listeners, from "gotta dance" enthusiasm to awe. The lyrics have been appreciated as being ". . . so powerful. They really move me." Another fan has declared the music "addictive" and "never gets tired of listening to it."

To Poppermost, music equals life and their goal is to make a great living making great music, whether originals or covers, for everyone. Poppermost is taking "retro" into a new century with their music and their attitude of, "First you're born, then you die. In between you can either watch 'Lucy' reruns or kick some butt playing great music. You choose. We did. We are headed to the top...'the toppermost of the poppermost!'"

The Poppermost name originates from the early Beatles' inspirational call and response, "...to the toppermost of the poppermost!"

  • The Next REM

Overall Rating (10 is best): 10 "Following my acquiring the 'Erika' single, which is probably one of the best Cd singles to come out of the U.S. in a long time, I found Poppermost's self titled debut album via the internet. I was not disappointed by the great songwriting, singing and instrumentation. I firmly believe Poppermost to be the next really important musical combo to come from the States, in line with the likes of REM. Absolutely fab!" -- ACME-US.com Review of: Poppermost

This is the best of the best indie music out there today. The songs are excellent, and the musicianship is absolutely incindiary. Highly recommended!!

  • Make way for a compelling musical presence
    author: Roberto Delgadillo

An arresting body of work punctuated with compact, kindred moments of surprisng and paradoxial self-reflection. My personal favorite is "Cinnamon Sunshine" with its smooth undertones and lyrics that echo Paul Westerberg. Another track "Where the Guilty Prayed" speaks to the grief from the unrealized experiences that occur in relationships throughout one's life. All in all, a worthy and highly recommended compilation of songs. Listeners will appreciate the wide range of talent and craft present in Poppermost.

  • Absolutely fabulous! Incredible lyrics and beautiful voices.

I can't remember the last time I listened to a cd over and over again and enjoyed every single song. The songs have me dancing one minute and self-reflecting the next. Lyrics that have true meaning and convey a message- what a refreshing change! Uplifting and moving.

  • Retro, retro, retro!!!!
    author: Kelly Jolley

That's right, it seems the timing may be right on for Poppermost. With the recent popularity of "retro-quasi-garage" bands like The Srokes, The Vines and The White Stripes, Poppermost may have an audience with their sound. I honestly thought that I had stepped into a time machine and it had transported me to 1968. It has a VERY retro feel and the guitar work on the instrumental is excellent!

  • Music for a magic carpet ride.
author: Las Vegas Weekly —Shawna Edge

On its self-titled debut, Poppermost pops on through pleasant, pure and psychedelic musical licks. The album's sound could be best described as a mix of the'60s band America, a little bit of the feel-good band Phish, and the unassuming charm of Elvis Costello. The easy groove of the acoustics matched with harmonizing vocals takes you to a different time and place. The disc opens with the upbeat and quirky "Bang Bang." Oliver's distorted voice is reminiscent of Social Distortion's Mike Ness, and the song even has that great rockabilly vibe. This is one track that demands repeated play because of its infectious rhythm and lyrics. Poppermost not only offers up happy upbeat songs but lays down some serious tracks that give the album substance. With "Lady-In-Waiting," about a young woman's lost battle with cancer, Poppermost delivers a beautifully sad song. This new band and its new album are worth lighting the incense, clearing the mind and letting the music take you on a magic carpet ride.
