notes
Rahel Jaskow's CD, "Day of Rest," consists mostly of songs for the Jewish Sabbath. Expertly recorded and mixed by fellow CD Baby artist Ray Scudero of Argaman Studios in Israel, Rahel's disc pioneers a new genre in Jewish music.
Rahel has recorded nearly every song in multiple voices, without musical accompaniment, to give the effect of a small a-cappella choir.
Rahel's clear, bell-like voice and harmonious vocal arrangements guide the listener to a quiet, tranquil place and make the spirit soar.
Although the songs are mostly in Hebrew (except "Lullaby in C," which is sung both in English and in Rahel's Hebrew translation), their message is clear to speakers of any language: to take the time to rest and refresh ourselves.
"Ms. Jaskow's voice quality is rich, enchanting and extremely appealing as an Israeli-style 'traditional folk' artist." -- Judith Pinnolis, Jewish Music WebCenter
Rahel appears as a guest artist on Hanna Yaffe's "Lullabies from Jerusalem," Shuly Nathan's "Open Roads" and "Mostly Carlebach," and Ray Scudero's "With the Help of Angels." Check 'em out -- they're all available right here at CD Baby!

Day of Rest
author: Naomi SykenRahel has the voice of an angel. Her style of singing a'capella harmonies is unmatched by anyone. Rahel Jaskow should be in every persons home that enjoys a voice that is one in a million and is heard only once in a lifetime.
Enchanting and harmonius choir.Beautiful voice!
author: Paolo ParrellaI like the wonderful harmonies by Rachel Jaskow.Day of Rest is a relaxing and harmonious music to rest our soul. She is a great singer and has a beautiful voice.
Day of Rest - delightful to listen to
author: Bernard Kohn, Manchester, EnglandIf Day of Rest was compiled over 4 years ago why have I never heard about it till now or is that something to do with Broadband. After hearing a couple of tracks on the CD baby site I bought the CD and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Rahel sings like a nightingale and interprets the music to perfection. I intend to buy another copy of Day of Rest for a cousin in Israel for Rosh Hashanah and hope it gives him as much pleasure as it has for me.
Peaceful, gentle music for stressed-out people
author: Andrea FrankelHer voice is gorgeous, and her harmonies wonderful (they remind me of madrigals in places). My only complaint is that it is hard for me to focus on this as foreground music - my mind keeps slipping off into a pleasant meditative place! This makes it an absolutely perfect CD to get a massage or do yoga to, or to play to create a stress-reducing background for cooking or housework.
Music to stir the soul!
author: Vi RascheThis is some of the most beautifully sung Shabbat music I have ever heard! Our whole family loves it and it is played every day in our home. Rahel has a voice kissed by G-d!
Day of Rest - a revelation
author: Raphael AvitalRahel Jaskow's rendition of these traditional songs is a refreshing change from the over-orchestrated renditions, that in past decades characterized such otherwise worthy efforts to preserve Jewish musical tradition. In fact, you could say she neither preserves nor completely reinvents these gems, but rather infuses new vitality into them. With a minimalist approach (no musical instruments are used on most tracks) and a mature and very personal interpretation, she multiplies her voice into very original arrangements that soothe the brow and quench the soul. The frequent, playful change of the voices from harmonies to unison is reminiscent of medieval European polyphonics, but the style is more contemporary, and the resulting effect is quite cheerful, without being overbearingly jovial. Just the right amount of all the necessary ingredients, and a touch of her personal stamp. At least one non-Hebrew-speaking, completely secular acquaintance is puzzled (and pleased) by the attraction and deep satisfaction this body of work holds, to the point of almost refusing to find a translation of the words, and independently arrived at the same conclusion that "Hazal" had reached ages ago - to add is to detract. For those of us familiar with the chants, the same is true of the music. One need not be observant either, the joy and the depth of expression conveyed here are by themselves a true pleasure to hear. My sincere compliments and warmest regards.
This compilation and the artist's voice combine for the best listening experienc
author: LeeAs an atheist, I was curious about the music. After listening to the samples, I knew I wanted to hear more. The music is the essence of rest, relaxation and 'at peacefulness'. Some friends and I were discussing this compilation and the beauty of Rahel's voice, and what it comes down to for me is something I said earlier in our discussion: "It dances on the ears, it's almost as if you understand the message without understanding the words. It causes me to want to learn Hebrew just to understand the music on a more intimate level. The music is her voice, and it's absolutely perfect, nothing is missing...anything added would detract." Thank You for the wonderful experience that listening to this brings!!
It fills me with peace, and energizes my spirit
author: LissaKayThe exquisite harmonies and soulful melodies melt the day's stress and strain from me. As I tend to my chores, "Day of Rest" makes my work light. When I sit down to rest when I am done, it is a peaceful rest and my mind is clear, not filled with worries. One cannot listen to Rahel and not be touched by God Himself.
The voice of angels
author: Dale BaranowskiMy son-in-law, Yoel, came to our home from an army furlough exhausted and went to bed. The next morning my wife was working in the kitchen adjacent to the room where Yoel slept and was playing Ms. Jaskow's CD. That morning Yoel shuffled into the kitchen and remarked: "I had a wonderful dream where angels were singing to me, and when I woke up I realized that the angels I heard in my dream were not in my head but were actually coming from this CD. This woman's voice is incredibly beautiful." Our whole family agrees that Ms. Jaskow's singing on this CD is nothing less than angelic.

Rahel's CD reminds me that peace will come to Jerusalem.
author: Riqi KosovskeRahel's voice and mellifluous, haunting, mesmerizing trope leyning at the Leader Minyan in Jerusalem two years ago transformed my sense of Torah and brought me back for a year of study. Now recently back from Israel, it is her CD that keeps me going and reminds me there is peace to be had in my soul, and that peace will come to Jerusalem. Thank you, Rahel, for being such a vessel.

You can make a difference through the gift of music.
author: Andrew KelemenI must compliment you on your musical talents. You can really make a difference -- in your case, through the gift of music. In a region of the world where peace, tolerance and justice are often elusive, hollow words, music can convey those revered beliefs in emotional ways words alone cannot. Music brings people together. Good luck with your musical endeavors!
I'm stunned!
author: Sam OrbaumRahel, I was absolutely stunned! This is fabulous music! I just finished listening to your CD, and noticed that I went through a variety of moods: sad at first, then aroused, then for the most part wonderfully calmed -- and all the while, amazed at your gorgeous voice. I am going to listen to this again and again; it's going to be the music I put on when I have guests over; and I'd like to know how to buy several copies -- what a splendid gift this will make!
What a wonderful voice.
author: Even Steven Levee, I-potato MusicRahel, I would like to congratulate you. I would also like to express how much I enjoyed listening to one of your tunes. What a wonderful voice. I only understood a few words, although I believe I feel your message. Keep up the great work.
Your CD is one of my favorites; your harmonies are beautifully blended
author: Kris Thayer, President & Ceo, Songpeddler, Inc.I wanted you to know that your CD "Day of Rest" is one of my favorites. I listen to it often when I'm on the road and need inspirational and relaxing music. Your harmonies are beautifully blended and it's very soothing music. I am not Jewish and I do not know a bit of Hebrew. I find that listening to the CD and not knowing what you're singing about allows me to really listen to the harmonies and melodies. Thanks for the CD. I'd love to hear more in the future if you release another CD with beautiful harmonies like this one.
The CD gives me great pleasure and solace.

One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard
author: Joe AminoffI just heard your disc. I am speechless! You have one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard! Many singers don't know how to use vibrato, but you use that beautiful, rapid vibrato to perfection.
One voice, so much harmony.
author: Susan Jaskow FitzpatrickThe vibrancy... The talent... The crystal clarity of a singular voice in harmony, soothing and sweet. What a magnificent accomplishment. I can't wait for the next CD!
Keeps my spirit both grounded and soaring

the most beautiful vocal music
author: Nachman RosenbergMs. Jaskow's voice is beautiful. This disk contains the most sublime vocal music imaginable, both when carefully listened to and also quietly as background music. It conveys a lovely sense of peace and calm. We all love it and listen to it repeatedly.
Fabulous. A masterpiece. Rahel's voice is superb as always.
author: Rikki RoseThis is a long awaited pleasure. Listening to Rahel's angelic voice in this collection of Shabbat songs truly brings rest to the soul. It's nurturing and healing effect is beneficial to all who hear it. May this be the first of many to come from this brilliant young artist. I thoroughly enjoyed it and just adore her voice.
I am really enjoying this disc!
author: Cliff ChurginI am really enjoying Rahel's disc. I bought it for my wife, but I find I am enjoying it too, even though I didn't think I would because this isn't really my type of music. But Rahel has my favorite Shabbat song on there -- the first track -- and hers is a really good version.
The disc is beautiful!
author: Sharon MinkThe disc is beautiful! When I played it for the girls, one of them immediately "lit up" and started to point to the computer and say things like "Who is that?" and "Where did you get that?", and other stuff that expressed her wonder and pleasure. The women of the family just love it!
Thanks for sharing this music with the world.
author: Aviva SoferThis disc is amazing. I love the music. Thank you for making it and sharing it with the world.
Rahel's voice is sweet and rich.
author: Dr. Phyllis CheslerI am enjoying this disc very, very much. I love Rahel's choice of a more awe-struck, contemplative melody for "Adon Olam," and also her choice of melody for "Yedid Nefesh." Her voice is earthy, sweet, vulnerable, and rich. I will be playing this disc for friends who hopefully will want one of their own.
The choir effect gives me chills
author: Olivia WerbyWow. I can't believe how beautiful you sound. The choir effect gives me chills. I am looking forward to receiving my copy.
Wow!
author: George MolnarAll I can say is "Wow." Even without understanding the words, Rahel's passion comes through loud and clear. Really beautiful work, Ms Jaskow!!
Shabbat Shalom!
author: Julie SmallmanRahel Jaskow has given voice to the "Sabbath Bride"! This collection, with its hypnotic melodies and subtly complex harmonies captures the true spirit of Shabbat. It is impossible to listen to Rahel's clear, rich voice (or more accurately, voices) and not be soothed. What is particularly remarkable about this work is its ability to transcend language. You don't have to know Hebrew to understand the meaning of this CD. It brings the listener to a place of peace and calm, which is, after all, where we want to be for the Sabbath. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Rahel's voice is clearly G-D -given.
author: Chana BenjaminI absolutely loved listening to Rahel's crystal clear voice sing along with her other voices so that they produced close to a divine quality. This CD is a wonderful way to prepare for the Sabbath.
Creating A New Genre
author: Ray ScuderoRahel Jaskow has suceeded in the creation of a new genre of music in the Hebrew language. Her arrangements are in a complete and refreshing departure from the traditional technique, using to full advantage the production facilities of the modern, digital studio with results that are complete and restful to the ears. Exquisette harmony! Particularly engaging are the Yom Ze and Lulaby In C tracks, the latter having a widespread and universal appeal, the former a total treat to the soul of the workweek-weary. Not to be missed !
