Random's long awaited musical masterpiece is here!

After taking the underground by storm with his "Fundamentals" EP, Philly Hip-Hop scholar, emcee and producer Random (aka Big Ran, Random Beats) is set to drop his debut on RAHM Nation Recordings, "The Call."Whereas “Fundamentals” is fun and lighthearted, “The Call” is a heartfelt, sentimental and serious journey into the soul of the man many know as Big Ran, combinining underground Hip-Hop, Classical, Gospel and Neo-Soul genres into a clever and revolutionary project.

Random's enlists some top-flight production and mic-work on The Call. Artists and producers from all over the world assist Random and label mates DN3, Ohene and Problem Child in creating an asthetically pleasing landscape for Random's urban psalms that easily surpasses anything else being done today. The first single, “Raze The Bar," produced by Samik (Ruff Ryders/G-Unit projects), and its B-side, "Salvation" featuring Wordsworth and Ron Damian is garnering high praise from reviewers and independent radio. Other featured artists include Majesty of New York, New Jersey revolutionary Hasan Salaam, Detroit’s Nadir, as well as fellow Philadelphia natives Reef the Lost Cauze and Hezekiah.The result is an album that demands to be listened to. On the album he touches on several social issues, and all the while provides a solid combination of wise insight and sharp, thought provoking lyricism. Far from a rapper, Random is a poet, the spokesman for the everyman.

    This CD is absolutely amazing...from track one all the way to track 19 the music was flowin and the lyrical game was intense. I would and have recomended the "The Call" to anyone looking to hear true hip hop. All in all, this CD is musical bliss.

    I'm so proud the singles from this album are in rotation at our station. "The Call" is quite comfortable next to Kanye West, Talib Kweli, and Lupe Fiasco. If you're a fan of that raw underground sound, you'll want this album.

    'The Call' is a biography, an interesting social document sketched on a canvas of various sounds, ranging from soul and jazz to gospel music. An album about life, love and beats, with a spiritual input, turnin some songs into therapeutic messages. Spiritual and even religious, as the title reveals, just listen to 'Push', 'Salvation' (featuring Wordsworth), 'Luminescence' (featuring Reef The Lost Cauze) and the interlude 'Prayer', which shows Random firm belief, related with his motivation and persistence in making music. 'I ain’t here for the fancy cars, I just came here to raise the bar', he raps in 'Raze The Bar', Random obviously has goals to set some new standards. Don’t get it twisted, this album won’t change the world, nor does it set new musical standards within hip-hop, but his strength in words is encouraging and uplifting. 'Raze The Bar' is also the first single of the album, produced by Samik, and a typical anti-radio, anti-bling bling song, provin Big Ran’s dedication to the art. As for the gospel involved in this album: check 'Don’t Let Me Die', featuring another Philly revelation Hezekiah, holdin a range of live instruments from bass, guitar, harmonica to wonderful soul vocals, only provin the musical diversity of 'The Call'. Furthermore, spoken word, poems and reflective interludes show that this record has a bit of everything without leaving the Path of Hip-Hop. Already twelve years in the game, but without any mentionable recognition, time has come for Random to set the record straight and 'The Call' might just be that record

    it's hard to find unsigned or up-comming artists who don't either rap about the same thing, or who just don't keep it real. I'm proud to say Random does both. Why is it that real artists don't get the credit they deserve? The hip-hop game is screwed up. People need to realize that everything isn't about cars, guns, drugs, etc. Deffinately an album to cop if you're looking for what's up.

    I honestly believe that Random’s “The Call” represents another brilliant innovation in the world of hip-hop. The production on this album is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. It is a unique and a refreshing change from popular hip-hop's current direction, and it is one of very few albums that has successfully put together such a wide range of producers while still maintaining continuity. The album uses a combination of seemingly hundreds of acoustic instruments and jazzy melodic sounds to make its beats. The lyrical content is, for lack of better terminology, super dope, and sticks with the current trend of underground artists talking about real life and heartfelt subjects that matter to the common man. And Random’s flow is experimental, ranging from slow and contemplative to quick and fun, showing off a broad verbal skill almost never seem in popular or mainstream hip-hop.

    The Call The album consisting of an abudance of 19 tracks is a rarity in that all the tracks are impressive! The album is not only a great album to listen on headphones but also great up loud! Random covers all grounds in his lyrics and music and truly is a lyrical genius not to mention his flow is tighter than Jenny Lopezs jeans! The album itself consists of underground hits, club classics, Love songs, comical skits with a number of talented producers and rappers., including 9th WOnder, DN3 and Wordsworth.. My personal favorites at the moment are The Opening Movement, Don't Let Die and Luminesescence which show how Random has progressed to be one of the most impressive artists in Hiphop today! Make sure you buy the call, you will not be disappointed and whilst your there make sure you cop the Fundamentals too, which like its successor is a truly remarkable album!     Random covers all his bases on this latest effort. From the club to the car to the church, "The Call" encourages deep and spiritual thought from its listeners while still being fun & highly entertianing. Like Michael Corvin in "Underworld," Ran is the perfect hybridization. But in this case it's a blend of lyrical emceeing and neosoul emotion. If this is the future of hip-hop, Kool Herc should be proud.

    Random, a.k.a. Random Beats, a.k.a. Big Ran is a 28 year old student of the culture. His latest album "The Call" is just what you would expect from an artist named Random. This 19 track album seems to touch every aspect of HipHop. From conscious style tracks to club hits, from political statements to love tracks. I absolutely think this is the best album I've reviewed in O6' so far. As far as stand out’s on the album, "Luminescence" featuring Reef the Lost Cauze and Neo P was one of my favorites. I felt some of the same excitement I felt when I first heard The Chronic. You just gotta hear it to understand fully. Overall, "The Call" is a tremendous effort, packed with good-times, bad-times, humor, and most of all positivity. Go get "The Call" on Feb 21st. --Butcher
