notes

This is the debut CD by East Village trio RAW Kinder.

Fronted by poet Renée Annabel Wilson, RAW Kinder has an edgy sweep, from hard-bitten to innocent, that inspires audiences to compare them to Mazzy Star, Patti Smith, Bjork and Jim Morrison (could it be the leather trousers?).

Voted 7th favorite band out of a field of 350+ at the 1998 Intel New York Music Festival, the Kinder hold a deep dark truthful mirror up to life. Join us now, and Feel the Love.

When we last heard RAW Kinder (on the Home Office Records compilation "Burner"), we were hailing them as a cross between Mazzy Star and the Doors; hauntingly beautiful. A head trip of spacey, mind expanding music that uses lead singer Renee Annabel Wilson's vocals as a dominant instrument. Now Home Office Records brings us "EP" the first RAW Kinder release. I must admit, at first I was a bit thrown off, this sounded nothing like the songs off "Burner," but the more I listened, the more I made the connection. How wild that these songs could sound completely different at first, but upon continued listens they showed themselves to have that same eerie, seductive charm wrapped in layers and layers of musical subterfuge that only heighten the sensibilities of the ears and mind. - G. RAW Kinder, EP. Surprise. A seeming white-bread trio from Brooklyn forges an art-funk sound that -- after being enhanced with some studio mysterioso -- results in a roaming, where-is-this-taking-us musical adventure that hearkens back to early '70s masterpieces like Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Leon Russell's Carney. The journey dodges some bullets in the first and last tracks when the singer, Renee Annabel Wilson, resorts to the kind of non-singing stylings that made a "star" our of flash-in-the-pan Edie Brickell. But her amusical droning is only a device -- everywhere else Ms. Wilson shows off some genuine vocal chops. The songs are impeccably produced as the seemingly spare arrangements blossom into layered textures that advance and recede in the mix. What that means is that you're going to have to listen more than once to get it all. For a five-song package, there is a lot here to consider. -- Mark Keating

Ever on the lookout for local New York groups that do more than just play guitars and shout (though we will always favor that too), we come to this trio that starts with programmed, simple drum rhythms and then places friendly piano and organs and picked guitar trills on top of them (that's it) for singer Renee Annabel Wilson to talk/sing over. She has a lot more feeling than the dozens of similar-sounding women storming the charts, and her backings are a lot less superficial -- I especially like the icy, chill winds of keyboards on the choruses of 'Become.' This is perhaps a little on the sketchy side--the arrangements are good but the songs could be a little catchier--but there is plenty of potential. For one thing, when you have a good singer, you can go anywhere. -- Jack Rabid
