RED HALO: Red Halo - Produced by Damon Johnson and Red Halo; Mixed by Kelly Gray; all songs written by Red Halo and Damon Johnson; Recorded at Double Dragon Studio, Alabaster, AL
(See also Red Halo: Dead Man's Vitamin, from 2003)
There was a time when rock-n-roll was real. Guns N Roses had Appitite For Destruction, and the hairspray fog was beginning to lift. Axl and company had kick-started a resurgence of raw, dirty, attitude drenched rock that hadn't been heard since the glory days of early Aerosmith. Bands like Motorcycle Boy and The Throbs reminded us that rockers were not supposed to be role models. Here it is 2005, and we have all seen what has become of the music industry. Thankfully, I found myself at the Mercury Lounge in New York City for what felt to me like a ride on a rock-n-roll time machine. Red Halo arrived from Birmingham Alabama, Hell-bent on taking a room full of industry blockheads and A&R guys, and blowing them away. That's exactly what they did. Like pages straight from a rock history book, Red Halo took the stage with Les Paul's and Flying V's blistering through Marshall amps. Four skinny white guys dressed in black, with jet-black hair. I swear it was if the 90's had never happened. No grunge, no rap-rock, no nu-metal, just amphetamine laced power chords and an impressive stack of bone crushing songs with ballads to die for. This being the boys' first trip to the big apple, it was crucial for Red Halo to make a lasting impression. Six solid songs later, word was out. I haven't heard anything like this in ages! Rock and Roll has a facelift, a new resurgence, and that resurgence is RED HALO!

author: Chris KaiserI have to admint that I was afraid of what RED HALO would sound like without Damon Johnson. I was surprised to hear that they still sound the same(some re-recorded songs)and I think the vocals are very strong.
This doesn't miss a beat...
author: HooperI was a bit hesitant without Damon singing. But the re-recorded versions sound great. I can't understand why these guys aren't bigger. If it weren't for Brother Cane and Damon's involvement, I never would have heard. Now I am hooked.
dear jon
author: from birminghamMarchants vocals are better than Damons. I was not a fan of the Dead Mans Vitamin EP, but this self-titled CD is good all of the way through. The best songs are Last Time, Save Me, Ride of my Life, and Sex Love ? I was at the chevelle show Jon was talking about (below) and Red Halo killed (that is good!) This CD is worth buying. If JD left RED Halo for The Deadline he will regret it soon because The Deadline will not go anywhere. Jon all of these guys are professional musicians (atlantic records is the real deal!). Until 50 dollars get to their level, your trying to be hurtful opinions will not mean a thing .... you act like someone from the band has hurt your feelings ... Marchant maybe ?
Rebuttals to bones boy's messageboard-like review
author: http://www.fiftydollars.ws/Rebuttals to bones boy's thoughts on my review, listed below: 1. True, Marchant's vocals weren't annoying in Virgos Merlot, Virgos, or the Devine, because Marchant did not sing in either Virgos Merlot or the Devine, and he wasn't even in Virgos. 2. Opinions of subject matter should affect one's opinion of the music in general, unless one commpletely ignores the lyrics, which comprise half of the artistic statement in question. Update: Red Halo are no more. JD Charlton left the band to pursue his career with theDeadline full-time. Why did he leave? Ask someone how well Red Halo was received when they opened for Chevelle at Sloss Furnace.

What Rock is missing!
author: Doug JohnsonI heard about this band through a friend of mine in Texas and can't stop listening to it. It seems some of these reviews are based on previous bands or production, but to me it is killer!!! I hope this band comes to Arizona, I hear they are a must see live band. Die Young is my favorite, but Ride of my life is very good too.
GREAT!! Enjoy this release!
author: bones boyI disagree somewhat with Jon's review above. He shouldn't let his distaste for certain subject matter affect his review of the CD. In any event the album is great. For the Virgos/Red Halo uninitiated, I tell them that if they like the energy of bands gone by, like Buckcherry and Local H, with the musicianship of someone like Sevendust, then they will enjoy this CD. I find nothing boring about Deacon's guitars on the disc. Additionally, Marchant's singing was never annoying in The Devine or either Virgos adaptation, and it's not annoying to me here. There are one or two weak moments (Die Young sounds rather cornball-ish) but Last Time, My Everything, Save Me, Ride of My Life and Like a Drug get played over & over in my CD player. A strong disk and a relief to all Virgos fans that the crux of the band could come back ... and so delightfully.
This band is badass!!!
author: Crashboxnyc.comThis band is badass!!! This is comparable to "appetite for destruction" from GN'R song for song!!
Pure Rock At Its Best!
author: AlexisThis albumn is a must...
Can Music actually be this good?
author: Gerard TremblettI first bought Dead Man's Vitamin awhile back and loved the band. This cd's is in great comparison with the first. I knew they would do awsome, even with a new singer. What tracker that are on this album that were on the firsts are redone perfectly. I'm hoping Red Halo makes it big. I'd like to see them come here to Newfoundland (although highly unlikly).
great cd
author: vnieldnot sure if I like the Dead Mans Vitamin version better or not so I guess I'll listen to BOTH thanks for saving rock and roll
Surprisingly good; some strong songs.
author: Jon BernreuterI have to admit this disc really isn't bad. It would have better if Damon Johnson [Brother Cane] were still the vocalist, but Marchant has proven to be a very capable, if moderately annoying, lead vocalist. 1. Amphetamine - the original version of this song has a swing feel, which gave it a lot more balls than this boring remake. 2. Devil Made Do It - really mediocre song. Worthless lyrics and lackluster music. 3. Living Free - this song is the first really strong song on the disc. Good lord, this bastard is catchy. 4. Why Fight It - Red Halo standard; needs no introduction. 5. Die Young - Although Marchant wimps out on the high notes in the bridge, his vocal performance is actually an improvement over that on the old version of this song. This version has less backing vocals, which gives the song a more somber feel. 6. Last Time - The return of Virgos Merlot much? :) And yes, that is a very good thing. 7. My Everything - my least favourite. 8. Save Me - this song alone is worth the price of the CD. Incredible. 9. Ride of My Life - this one harks back at the glory days yet again with obvious nods to "Kiss My Disease" and "Next Time [Around]". 10. Like a Drug - another incredible song. 11. Sex, Love, or Confusion - this is another Red Halo standard; I personally like this one much better than Why Fight It. General commentary: This album was not mixed will at all. The drum and vocal production is really amateur sounding, and be prepared to cut out all treble on your stereo eq or risk blowing out your tweeters. Also, the lead guitar playing is a little boring, and the cussing and drug references sound really forced and silly. Get this CD though; it's worth it I promise.
good stuff
author: ed nachmanThis is a really good disk. Lots of cool tunes, definately worth the cost ...
