notes
Ron Saya, nicknamed "the Mayor", captures the essence of his roots/jungle-living lifestyle with this acoustic CD. Recorded live on Kauai's NaPali coast, "Kalalau Stew" features Ron playing his own handmade bamboo flutes throughout the valley with such notable locals as Dennis Oberon on drums, Bob White and Maui Man on guitar plus Mike on accompanied flute. This CD captures the magic of Kalalau valley as only Ron and his friends can show it to you: pure, uplifting and inspiring.
Kalalau Stew was recorded in two separate caves at the southern end of Kalalau Beach. Imagine huge caverns with high ceilings. Everywhere water is dripping. You can hear it delicately hitting the brackish pond, which has become the floor of the cave. This water floor is vital for producing the best acoustics and creating a natural studio chamber echo effect. These caves are not accessible year round because the winter surf completely fills them with water. Recording in the very last cave requires some forethought, as it is only open for a few weeks each year, at the very end of the summer.
Beyond the caves, you can hear the rhythm of the breaking waves - echoing harmoniously as they mingle with flute and drum. The music becomes a true joining of the spirit sound of man and nature. Deeply connected and alive, people come together and share in a bounty that is pure transcendence.
