notes
"Unlike anything else...incredible...a completely unique visionary."
Mississippi Studios

"If singer-songwriter Rachel Taylor Brown's third release, "Ormolu," needed to be summed up in a single word, it would have to be "melancholic." But "pensive" could work well, too, as would "brooding," or to keep it simple, "sad." And "beautiful" would be apt as well.....And that's the difficult artistic trick Brown has pulled off with "Ormolu." She's managed to construct a quick listen that feels almost epic, an album that demands to be encountered and examined again and again."
The Oregonian
******
"'Upright Man'" truly showcases Brown's voice and songwriting skills; the image she conjures of a man being trampled, almost peacefully, by a steady stream of foot traffic while repeating, "I'm under you" and "I'm a good man," is desperately sad, but ultimately very human and empathetic."

"Its not surprising that Rachel Taylor Brown sings with a couple of local classical groups when shes not performing as a solo artist or playing in her friends bands. Her voice sounds pure and gorgeous; her songwriting and sparse, piano-based arrangements are classic. Ormolu...a collection of hauntingly beautiful, heartbreaking songs illuminate what happens when love turns into something poisonous and people turn into something other than what we wanted."

"Delicate, contemplative and beautiful in its melancholy, Rachel Taylor Brown's music will wend its way into your soul, and there it will stay. A truly remarkable and unique talent worthy of your attention and further exploration."

"Brown never loses the humanity of each of the characters she creates, in the same way that Breugel could record our follies while also expressing the love he felt for our silly species. As with her past releases, Brown exercises her considerable range as a vocalist, reminding us of her classical work and her ability to put that to use to create dark expressionist tonal worlds like the ones found on Ormolu. Think Randy Newman meets Stravinsky."
The Portland Alliance

"Ormolu is only 23-1/2 minutes long and I guarantee that you will keep hitting the replay button on your CD player... over...and over... and over... Hell, I played it back to back five times in a row. This is a must have...will be in my TOP 10 list for album of the year." [Ormolu was named 2 Album of the Year]
WOT90s Radio
******
"Rachel Taylor Brown's new release, Ormolu, guides the listener to the musical tales portraying the soft underbelly of social vulnerability, exposing lives out of balance, revealing some of life's universal struggles and fears. Brown utilized a broad spectrum of instrumentation, with each precious piece of music deliciously served on its own, unique emotional platter. I felt sorrow after listening to Ormolu; sorrow that the CD was over, and there was no Side 2."
Apotheosis di Musica
******
“Uncompromising in her writing, willing to imbue her songs with the artful attack of dissonance, storm and stress, and lyrics that will rip your heart out. Part madwoman in the attic, part pop-diva, Rachel is a crazy talent.”

I love, love, love this CD! RTB's "Ormolu" is by far the best album to come out of Portland in ages! It's definitely on my top 10 list for 2006! What can I say about this CD? Everything! But, why don't you just buy the cd and let the music speak for itself. Rumor has it that Rachel is woring on another release come early 2007. I can't wait!
The real deal
author: Mick JeffcoatNext to my turntable I have a stack of old records that get more play than anything else I have...Randy Newman, Blood Sweat and Tears, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young...all stuff that came out years ago and has worn better than most of whats been released in the past couple of decades. If brown had put out ormolu on vinyl, it would be in that stack. Each new release makes it clearer what a unique find this artist is, especially with all the people out there right now who have nailed the look and sound of someone great but have no voice of their own and absolutely fuck-all to say. You can hear the influence of past greats, especially Newman in brown's music, but what she has deliver is something that is truly all her own. Imagine for a second Randy Newman with the voice and classic metal edge of Ann Wilson and you'll start to get the idea. Best $10 I spent this year - just wish it had come out on vinyl. mj
