Surrounded By Ninjas
the future of improvisation...now.
/
The history of Surrounded By Ninjas' unique brand of dark grooves, mysterious soundscapes and ingeniously hypnotic progressions gets its start here, with Realtime Modify: a collection showcasing Asher Fulero and Joel Barber's first forays into completely freeform music production.

Recorded entirely live during their 2002 weekly residency at Portland's legendary Goodfoot Lounge, these tracks employ no pre-production; meaning that none of the elements were pre-programmed or looped at home- each sound was played (via keyboards, turntables and FX), looped, and manipulated on the fly onstage- without a net.  Completely improvised, this music matches the dark lounge atmosphere in which it was created- it pulsates with life, hiding in a dark corner and waiting like a trained assassin.

Get lost in the turntables, wade through the darkness of the deep basslines, get washed away by the layers of keyboards, and get zapped by the electronic effects.  But most importantly, keep your guard up.  You never know when you might be.... Surrounded By Ninjas.

  • Fits nicely between Miles and Tortoise

Everything I had hoped for, a competent production of chilled out (yet surprisingly energetic) beats with the range of a jazz quartet. Put this disc between a Bitches Brew era Miles and some Tortoise for a little roadtrip snack.

Excellent album. Definetly has the real-time improv feel to it; the organic flow is strong. Well produced and engineered. Reccomended for grooving in the background of your day or at the forefront of your night.

surrounded by ninjas realtime modify is a cd that shows the brilliance of utilizing the human element to it's fullest in electronic music. they prove the fact that computers cannot completely take over music without a good fight back. this is the electronic / dance music listener's jazz- intelligent, off the beaten path and unimitatible.

  • Unique, beautiful, and very skillful.

Cool name, cool music. File under down-tempo/beat/chill. This disc is a delicious mix of gently shifting beats and samples. Everything here is unique and well placed. As mentioned elsewhere, the music on this album was entirely improvised and created on the fly. No pre-programming involved. This is a disc that will be in heavy rotation in my household for sometime to come. In hopes they check this site occasionally, I offer them my thanks for creating something fresh and wonderful.

Daring to challenge the reign of the hard drive, the trend of completely computer-generated Electronic trends, these crafty guys enchant their fans without the aid of computers, sequencers, backing tracks, or pre/post production in an intoxicating brew of 100% live instrument improvisational downtempo, dub, and dark futuristic groove. Created by 14 pieces of gear, 4 hands, 4 legs, and most importantly, two excessively creative minds, Surrounded By Ninjas brings back the entrancing artistry of the human touch, melting and molding the light and the dark, casting a spell on the passage of time.

  • Who needs a studio?
    author: David M

I bought "Real Time Modify" on a whim and have since recommended it to several people with varying tastes. It's a really great, chill album that shows all the depth, range, and inventiveness that good studio engineering and long months of planning can make possible. Of course, an improvised recording, it was acheived without any of that. These guys are clearly prepared, if not rehearsed, and I hope they have another album out soon.

  • Good guys. Great music.
