notes

"Dark Road Piano" is Charleston, SC-based bluesman Shrimp City Slim's eighth album release and his first solo project (simply acoustic grand piano & vocals), cut live one sultry afternoon in an ancient church in historic Charleston, SC.

This intimate set is comprised of fifteen new original songs, including the first versions of "Enjoy the Ride" and "(We Should Be) Naked".

Though still leading his band from coast-to-coast and overseas, Shrimp City Slim is spending more & more time performing as a solo artist.

Just a man & his piano..."Dark Road Piano" is the best representation of what this appealing artist sounds like up-close-and-personal.

TOUR ALERT 3/24/08: Shrimp City Slim's "Dark Road Piano" tour goes to France July 16-August 3, 2008, where he will be backed up by Dr. Pickup, The Bluesmakers (two Paris-based bands) and doing a show with French blueswoman Sophie Kay. In addition, July 26-27 SCS will play Cognac Blues Passions with Wanda Johnson. More info at www.shrimpcityslim.com

  • After listening to "Dark Road Piano"
author: Adam Gussow (formerly of Satan & Adam)

I enjoyed our duo gig in Charleston in June; thanks again. After listening to "Dark Road Piano", now I know why you are working so much...nice.

  • Tasteful homage to all piano players...hot intense savage blues
author: Vicente Zumel (La Hora del Blues, Barcelona, Spain)

A real lover of the most orthodox, hot, intense, savage blues...a tasteful homage to all piano players who have influenced him. Here you will find Sunnyland Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Pete Johnson, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair. One of the best representatives of "Lowcountry blues"...how can you miss the chance to get this CD for your collection?

  • Thought-provoking, solid
    author: Blues Revue (Oct/Nov '06)

Sonics are good and compositions are solid, particularly the in-the-wake-of-the-hurricane tribute "Go Back to New Orleans", the thought-provoking "(We Should Be) Naked", and the 'en espanol' blues "Esta Casa Azul".

  • A good dose of boogie woogie & ragtime
    author: Blues News (Germany)

A little bit of Fats Waller, some Randy Newman, and a good dose of boogie-woogie and ragtime...fifteen original songs that never grow tiring, featuring some great lyrics.

  • Songs that make your feet tap, body shake & put your mind at ease
    author: Billy Bop Review (Belgium)

It was awhile since I heard from him, but (Dark Road Piano) is certainly worth the wait. These are songs that make your feet tap, body shake & put your mind at ease...music that is sunny, occasionally swamp, danceable.

  • Remarkably talented blues pianist...entertaining!
author: Brenda Barbee (Roots Music Report)

Shrimp City Slim is a remarkably talented blues pianist who can readily get his listeners into the music. An entertaining blend of music...something you can really enjoy.

  • Uniquely listenable...a flawless, exciting blues pianist
    author: Arthur Shuey (Blues Source)

Uniquely listenable...Shrimp's a flawless, exciting blues pianist who knows how to hammer the keys until his audiences respond. Get to know the man through these songs.

  • A mastery of the older (blues) styles
author: Norman Darwen (Blues & Rhythm, UK)

Shrimp City Slim has been a champion of the blues from his base of Charleston, South Carolina for many years now. Every now and then, he slips out an album of his own. He has a mastery of the older styles and a knowledge of the more modern 'singer/songwriter' style presently popular in the contemporary blues scene. Here, he mixes the two intelligently in a programme of fifteen original numbers...a nicely different CD.
