notes
Front Porch Records Records (UK) is really proud to present the latest release from Blues Guitarist Son Henry. It's an eclectic collection of largely Chicago-style blues with some surprising instrumentation- Son's virtuoso lap-steel playing is featured through-out.
Originally from Alaska and now living in Scotland, Son sharpened his skills playing countless roadhouses all across the last frontier where the party starts when the tourists leave for the winter. It's a land of late-night parties in remote settings where people appreciate the power of original, roots-based soulful music.
We were first introduced to Son's music while on a fishing trip of all things. He was playing with his band at the Denali Fairview Inn in Talkeetna, Alaska. Picture a small roadhouse packed to the rafters, jumping and dancing in a room that's miles from the nearest highway. We were struck by the raw power and originality of the music we were hearing. And equally amazed by the dancing horde that didn't let the band quit until almost 5 in the morning. It was over beer and pancakes that we decided to recruit Son for the label. It wasn't that difficult a decision, actually.
This new record is an impressive one- it's a step back from the raw Delta Blues style that he's best known for, and has nine original songs in a more classical Chicago Blues style. But, it's still a typical Son Henry record- the songs groove, the lyrics interesting (with some odd literary references that will challenge you) and the music wants to explode out of the speakers.
So, we're happy to share this one with you! It's a great disk from the mad genius of the lap steel guitar and one you'll be glad is in your collection. I know we are!
