notes

squint’s (www.squint.com) latest record, Tinsel Life, was produced by the legendary Ed Stasium (Ramones, Soul Asylum). Riding success at both college and commercial radio, squint is perpetually on tour, supporting such acts as Alter Bridge, Fall Out Boy, The Goo Goo Dolls, Drowning Pool and The Toadies; squint’s live show caught the attention of national television program True Music, who captured squint live and featured them alongside Tantric and Matchbox 20. Based on squint’s live show – Atlas Microphone Stands has signed on as a sponsor of squint – making squint the first artist in history sponsored by a microphone stand company. squint is also proudly sponsored by AKG Microphones and Jagermeister. With a live CD planned for release later this year, a song featured on the 2006 Jager Music CD, a live DVD in the works, and a CD release in April – 2006 is poised to be a great year for squint.

  • Amazing
    author: Erin R.

The 5 years that dedicated fans suffered through for a new Squint album paid off. Tinsel Life could not be any better. The production is excellent, the songs are unique, and the lyrics are genuine. Dane, Tote, Matt, and Young Charles out did themselves on this album. If for some weird reason you listen to these songs and don't fall in love with the album at once, give it one more shot. This album is the real thing....

  • A solid album with 11 solid songs
    author: Alan Karna

This is Squint's best album yet... And I HAVE every album.... not just Beeker, but their early demos, too, and I LOVED them. This is the most refined, well produced of all their albums. The production quality is much higher than in any of their previous efforts, obviously Ed Stasium had something to do with that. But enough of that... let's talk about what matters... THE MUSIC. If you love Rock 'N' Roll and dabble in punk, or love both, and are sick of the same happy go lucky poppy crap that's playing on the radio this is a CD for you. Don't ask for comparisons, either... I haven't heard anyone quite like Squint... you could do a kinda this, kinda that thing with a bunch of bands, but you can never put your finger on their unique sound. In this album, Squint explores various facets of relationships, both positive and negative...but mostly negative, as usual...but there's already a million love songs out there, so who needs 'em? Most of these songs almost anyone can relate with... and even for the few (and it will be few) songs you might not relate to, it's still great, catchy music. Matt plays a damn mean guitar ;-) and the entire band plays with a harmony I just don't see in most other bands, either...especially hard rock or punk bands. True, it's not the hardest stuff out there... it's not "real punk" but regardless, it's just beautiful most of the time... stuff that most people would enjoy listening to, unlike "real punk." Aside from the catchy tunes, the lyrics on this album make you think... this is what really sets them apart from most bands these days. Just by listening, you reflect on your own relationships, past or present, and how it relates... and you can't truly understand it all without really thinking about it. "Tinsel Life" doesn't coddle you and spell it out for you, the lyrics are full of subtle hints and words that have larger meanings than what is on the surface. Dane seems to put into words what we're all feeling at one time or another... but we can't seem to think straight enough to form the words to say. AT LEAST half of the songs on this album ought to have you going "Yeah, that's exactly how I felt... how come I couldn't think of that?" OK, now I'm trying not to explain what the songs are about, but sometimes I feel I have to in order to review it... The music behind Anthem for Closure just left me wanting more the first time I heard it... it's a great opening song... and I love the wit that Dane uses in the lyrics... after wasting countless words in letters he apologizes to them for doing so... Glimmer and Phrase is more of a raw breakdown... a why me? that you feel just after your world comes crashing down... certainly something most people can relate to... but put to careful, though out words and music. It has a basic, catchy rhythm to it, with some cool riffs and solos thrown in for color. Postergirl is just a fun song... the music is more upbeat than the rest of the album...and you can't help but get a smile on your face after listening to this song about a man with impossible standards complaining that he'll never find his perfect girl... lots of tongue-in-cheek phrases and a nice to listen to once more after playing the entire album through. Unfinished is one of my favorites on the album. It's got a nice beat and beautiful music. It is very thoughtful and the closest thing this album has to a love song ;-). It would seem to me that this song is about Dane himself, and Dane writes it so well you can almost imagine what it's like to be in his shoes... Shadow Shadow is another of my favorites... Shows the diversity of Dane's in song persona's-this is what might be going on in the mind of a stalker. This one might get stuck in your head... but for this song, it's a good thing. Quite is one of those songs that when you play the album, then you look over the tracklist and you're like... what happened to that other awesome song? And what's this "Quite" song? Then you play it again and realize that's it! I can't really describe any other way other than just a good song. Well Hell is another song I can really relate to lyrically. Matt's guitar just grinds in your mind along with Dane's lyrics... then Tote's drums wake you up... isn't that my life he's singing about? No-name just starts off with a catchy guitar riff, slowly building up until it explodes in your face... there is a lot of depth, too... you can hear the whole band well throughout this song (one very small complaint I have is I can't always hear Charles' bass very well... in this song, though, its there). Another of my favorites... there's a lot of them on this album ;-) This time Dane's singing about that fling you had where everyone got hurt...you remember... yep...that one... A Glimpse at Why has happened to you or someone you know... hell, it just happened to me... I've been on both sides of this one... another great show of Dane's lyrical abilities... he seems to be able to imagine what it's like in almost any sort of relationship and with a clarity unlike others... it all makes sense. Random Caring is a redo off of their last CD, "Beeker" this song shows how far they've come musically in 5 years... Now, the title track, "Tinsel Life". Damnit, how does Dane know what I'm thinking??? get out of my head, Man! *LOL* Of course the refrain in this song embodies what I'm usually thinking when I'm about to put a Squint CD in the player... this might be why they all started this band, who knows. It's another great song... starts with an awesome building intro... you can hear Matt and Charles very well... starts of mellow and builds up throughout the song. Don't be confused by the word "favorite" either... they're ALL great songs that I play over and over and over.... and over again... there really isn't a bad song on this album, in my opinion.

  • Tinsel Life Is The Most Infectious Album Of The Year!
    author: Ghost

Tinsel Life Is 11 tracks of awesome Alternative Rock. Squint is reviving alternative and in a good way. The tracks on Tinsel life would remind the listener of what Jane's Addiction would have sounded like with a good singer. The album is amazing all the way from the first track, Anthem For Closure, all the way to the last, Tinsel Life. The lyrics are the most catchy I've heard in a long time, in Anthem For Closure, Dane Adrian has a conversation with his lyrics, and the guitar on Glimmer and Phrase is amazing. The Bass on Well Hell will really get you moving and Tote's beats are as always, out of this world. Tinsel Life is definitely a must have for any fan of Alternative Rock.

  • A TRUE, rock band...
    author: Ginger Robertson

Being a long time fan of Squint, Tinsel Life, Squint's 2nd album is well worth the time. Their lyrics, mainly about relationships gone awol, hit very close to home. The music is very energetic, yet something you can relax to during a trip in your car. Tinsel Life, compared to Squint's first album, Beeker, is more polished (musically and lyrically) and has more raw emotion in it. Produced by Ed Stasium, you can hear it in the music that this band is a TRUE rock band and they will go somewhere!!
